Dell 15" has a weight of 2kg dgpu and 1.8 kg without
I think Apple can achieve same results easy with a little redesign

Are you serious ? I am a software developer, how should I develop apps/software for apple devices without a OS X ? So please don't tell me that you can handle every task with every operarting system. There is no limit for a MacBook Pro, in addition there are many video editing programs which only run on OS X.

Finally, have fun with the windows commandline.
Well, you are right about development for Apple Devices and XCode. But this is very narrow task in general. For most web\enterprise development windows is fine. Command line - agreed, MS done nothing with it since... But office suite is irreplaceable for corporate environment and it works much better on Windows machines(visio for example).
If you play games, mac is obviously a limitation.
I'd like to buy a new mpb for day-to-day work, but this waiting without any promises(let's be honest, we might not see redesign till fall) is no good and I wonder if OS X worth it.

Well, I'm loving my new 2015 15" still. Definitely worth the upgrade from my 2012 15". Already lining up a plan to resell it with minimal loss once new rMBPs are announced.

so guys... I couldn't wait any longer and moved onto Dell XPS 15. As of now. I am loving the skylake speed, battery life, the screen is amazing, the thinness of the bezels on the screen, the portablility and oh! nvidia!! I am loving it now. Good luck everyone else !! =)
"Skylake speeds" Placebo much? Skylake was more of a power consumption update rather than performance (from what I've read).

Let us know how you like it. I personally almost went for a Razor Blade but cannot give up OS X. Also planning on getting a Razor Core later this year so graphics shouldn't be an issue anymore either.

I believe the XPS weight difference is partly attributable to the use of carbon fiber, which compared to aluminium is lighter but a little less durable.

Why can't I get a laptop like a top-of-the-line Dell XPS 15" without a dedicated graphics card?

Say what you want about Apple and their policies regarding dedicated GPUs, but at least they give you a choice. Most manufacturers are actually proud that they managed to squeeze a big-ass nVidia into their "mobile workstation", while for me that just means more heat, more loud fans, and absolutely no benefit compared to an internal GPU (especially Skylake!).

I want the best available processor but no dedicated GPU and I seriously can't find any alternatives to a MBP. Couple that with the fact that graphics cards are infamously badly supported on Linux and I just can't justify a switch to a different manufacturer... even though at this point I wish I could.

Goddamn it Apple, why do you make such good products but are so terrible with actually releasing them?

Yeah, because dGPU are so active outside of playing games.... :)

Yeah I'm not much of a developer... I'm more of everyday consumer following the sheeps ;) I certainly do play games, web browsing, etc, but ever since Apple decided to hold back on their release for new Mac lines I finally gave up. March was the last straw for me.

I've waited but nothing about mac line ups. I've owned iPad 2,3, Air, iPhone 4,5,6 (currently), also owned Macbook Pro 15 (2009, 2012) and Macbook Air 13. I've been following and owning Apple devices. I needed computer now and saw few good options (Razer, DellXPS, or back to Apple). I couldn't handle the 2015 specs of 15inch rMBP (outdated).

With OS system, I still do prefer OSX over Windows any day of the week, but with the limitation and Apple's obsession with their thinness over performance, i gave me to the dark side of the force. In other news, XPS is great right now with my spec of 1TB ssd, 16gb, nvidia gtx, i7-6700hq cpu all under $2100. ;)

HaHa maybe! I don't know yet, too early to tell...I'll update after a month of usage but Razer Core does seem awesome, but do you know if it is compatible with Apple? I know they use thunderbolt 3 to my knowledge, but do you think there wouldn't be any glitchy/buggy problems?

Thunderbolt 2 eGPU solutions have existed for a while now. They're completely plug-n-play for Windows (via Boot Camp) and on the OS X side of things, its not too difficult to setup (however Macs with dGPUs cannot take advantage of the eGPU on the internal display, meaning you can only utilize a dGPU in OS X with an external display).

The Razor Core is just the first USB-C/TB3 eGPU to hit the market (I think).

Well actually no. With older tech you could not yank the cable or put it in during operation. You needed to reboot and then you'd be able to use the eGPU. This is new with TB3 and AMD XConnect technology.

So what are you able to do with the XPS in real life situations that the 15" MBP couldn't do? Besides run OS X of course...

Actually, snc is right on this one. Unless you are running an application that can take advantage of the dGPU, it's basically put into solitary by the OS. There are even options (sometimes by third party apps, usually by the OS or graphics manufactures themselves) where you can completely disable it.

Other than the extra price, size, and weight, there aren't really any disadvantages to having a dGPU on your system. And weight is usually negligible, size doesn't matter with decent computer designers like Dell and Apple (hence the 0% difference in actual size of the dGPU and non-dGPU versions of the 15 inch).

Apple really only gives customers the option of no dGPU so the base price of the 15 inch isn't 2,500 USD. Because you know Apple is going to charge top dollar for that mediocre GPU lol.:apple:...

Yes, I failed to mention this. AMD's XConnect (allegedly being released later this year) will truly make the entire process plug-n-play. As far as setup goes though, plugin eGPU, boot Windows, and drivers should be automatically found and installed - or the usual download drivers from manufacturers website, etc..

Long time lurker here and I need a bit of advice about what I should do.

I'm in a situation where I need a new laptop soon, like next 2-3 months soon, but I am unsure about what to commit to.

I'm a casual user compared to most of you, this will not be a work machine. Portable and features are the keys for me. Power is nice, but not needed. I'm deciding between the new MacBook and 13" MacBook Pro. I really like the MacBook features like the keyboard, better screen, colors, and sound quality. However, I keep hesitating due to the fact that overall the 13" MacBook Pro seems like the better bang for your buck. Should I just take a deep breath and wait for the refresh to make a purchase or it's not worth the wait for my needs?

Do you feel this decision should be easier than I am making it? Lol

I'm in a similar position, I'm waiting a few more months. my i2007 iMac still works, no need to be harried into purchasing an older device.

Even if those new devices are overkill, I anticipate that the current range would see discounts.

A Skylake 12" MacBook seems to be on the horizon very soon, according to few things found in the latest version of OS X. There will probably be a price drop as well. If not, you will be able to buy the current MacBook at a cheaper price once the new one releases. There are already resellers selling the current model for $999.

I think the best thing can happen is Apple buying AMD (there are some rumours about AMD pretenders, if Zen doesn't do well in sales) and making his own x86 micros, like he already started doing with ARM many years ago. That would mean no Intel dependence, more competence (so Intel and AMD/Apple forced to constantly innovate to be on the edge), and no more "wait year and a half to see a new Mac" because of Intel lazyness. That, plus custom designed micros by Apple that would take it to the next step, just see how the AX line performs against the other similar micros, and the high performance leaps year after year.

Yes, I read that and it made my decision harder. I obviously don't need all the bells & whistles, but for a similar price it's hard to not wait for the 2016 version. I'm also very curious about what they will do with the 13" MacBook Pro, I assume it will get much more changes than the 12" MacBook.

I was set on choosing between the 2015 models very soon and then boom 2016 rumors popped up. Lol

I'm in the same boat and waiting for June, mostly because the depreciation of the current model will be much higher than the 2016 model. It's worth waiting 3 months.

My only worry is that it won't be released in June but later on like September, which would be very annoying...

Got myself the SurfaceBook and couldn't be happier with it. I've been hearing bad stuff about it which made me a bit hesitant, but figured I could just return it if I didn't like it. No need. This thing's a beast and so well designed (rare for a Windows machine).

Maybe I'll be a bit jealous once the new Macs come out (whenever that will be), but certainly won't regret my choice.

If SurfaceBook had a 15 in screen I'd be gone. (I'm so sick of waiting for Apple to update the MBP) The new touch sensitive screen would be great for PP photos if only it had a larger screen.

I've considered this also. As far as I can tell it beats the MBP in every single way - battery life, display, performance, innovation, etc. but I don't know if I could return to Windows after ten years of Mac.

How are you finding it? Is there anything you think it does worse than the MBP?

Seriously, what's an inch and a half between friends?
If it were a quad core 15" then we'd be talking...it's nice but I think the Surface Book is way over-priced for what you get...

Almost same here, got myself a Surface Pro. I was looking at the Book and loved the larger screen but I could not live with the gap when closed. I was almost afraid to buy it as I expected to get buyers remorse. Not at all so far, love the device and am impressed by Win 10!

This is exactly how Apple is losing customers and will continue to lose customers. People who will try W10 because they're tired of waiting and then realizing that W10 isn't that bad, after all.

...it's nice but I think the Surface Book is way over-priced for what you get...

The same statement applies to any of the MBPs right now.
