I really like (almost love) Windows 10, but I still would not ditch OS X for it. Even if Apple does start to get behind on hardware updates.

Almost same here, got myself a Surface Pro. I was looking at the Book and loved the larger screen but I could not live with the gap when closed. I was almost afraid to buy it as I expected to get buyers remorse. Not at all so far, love the device and am impressed by Win 10!

Any issues with hangs and such?

I believe these are mostly due to Skylake because they happen on other machines. But since the Surface Pro is more expensive people complain louder

This is exactly how Apple is losing customers and will continue to lose customers. People who will try W10 because they're tired of waiting and then realizing that W10 isn't that bad, after all.

The same statement applies to any of the MBPs right now.

Maybe..however two wrongs don't make a right and in the UK the top end Surface Book is currently £2,249 for an dual core 13.5" laptop with 1gb GPU, 512 SSD.

For £1.999 you can get a quad core rMBP with 2gb GPU, 512 SSD ...and a machine that will blow the Surface Book out the water on pretty much every task I'd guess...and that's on 'old tech'

If you compare it to the 13" rMBP ( as Microsoft did in their initial claims of 2x fast/MBP killer) then the price difference is even greater.

So if MBP's are overpriced the Surface Book is outrageously priced...you could get a workstation for that price...still like the look of them but the power issue would hold me back...for now...

Iris Pro Graphics 580 (Intel NUC6i7KYB - Skull Canyon NUC) shows up @ SiSoftware

Video Shader Compute:
- Iris Pro 580: 535.44 Mpix/s
- Iris Pro 6200 (average score): 326.74 Mpix/s

Listed here.

This chip (Core i7-6770HQ) could be used in the 2016 MPB 15'' (base model).

Even better since the 2015 MacBook Pro is stuck on Iris Pro 5200.

Seriously, what's an inch and a half between friends?
If it were a quad core 15" then we'd be talking...it's nice but I think the Surface Book is way over-priced for what you get...
we are talking about a quad core 15

Anybody notice the new surface book commercial when the artist/photographer says I can't do this on my Mac uses the same song from a MacBook Pro retnia reveal commercial from 2012? I guess other companies will copy literally everything apple does

Seriously... scrapping at the bottom of the barrel now :/

Remember: Surface devices = expensive, Macs = Overpriced.

Not saying that Surface devices aren't great devices (they are, and just like macs, deserve a premium for the build quality) or that the rMBP couldn't use an update and price drop, but I've had numerous discussions with people at my university who will defend Surface devices as just being expensive but not overpriced, but automatically argue Macs as overpriced regardless.

that's because they're sheep; chewing up the same things and pushing out age-old arguments from the other end...
quite ironic. use their logic on the Surface Book.

So what are you able to do with the XPS in real life situations that the 15" MBP couldn't do? Besides run OS X of course...

Well if you are just web browsing, youtube, watching movies then both mac & pc do same thing. However, when it comes to running different software there are some difference. For Mac, for example like FINAL CUT PRO is one of their highly praised applications when it comes to editing which is only exclusive for OS X. While for me I like to run graphic intense programs such as solidworks, AUTOCAD, and stuff like that... there are some programs that are just available to PC and same goes for OS X.

I really do like OS X for their seamless continuous integration of their ecosystem between iPhone,iPad, and Macbooks (which windows 10 lacks). OS X seems less buggier and i guess more easier to use? Maybe? iMessage is awesome which i still miss, preview (editing photos, pdf)...etc.

XPS: I really like the infinity edge. It looks crazy good with their thin bezels that makes the computer look like 16.5 inch screen while inside the 15 inch computer (magic? :D) . 4K sharpness really crisp and more ppi, 16gb (upgradable to 32gb), 1TB ssd and all this under 2100 which is cheaper than macbooks.

Apple is already behind... yeah but I agree with OS X part... it was such a heartfelt journey for me to leave behind OS X for Windows 10. =( Goodbye...

you guys must see xps in person because that bezel is not so beautiful you may think
the differences between the bezel from top and bottom are huge, double, at our macbooks are almost even

Yep, A quad core 15" Surface Book would be great...and would tempt many over...as it is I'll either be buying a workstation or the new rMBP...depending on when they get the thing out and on the specs/performance in the highly probable thinner form.

I'd like to stay with OS X but it's not a deal breaker if things drift too far in the 'wrong direction' for me.

I am now in two minds... I have been researching the Razer Blade (but it looks like it is going to be AU$4000+ here) or an MSI WS60. Both are really great specced machines, but neither run OS X, which is something that does irk me... it is not that I wouldn't want to go back to Winblows (Win 10 is not that bad... MS are getting better and I dual boot it on my Hackintosh), but I have really become accustomed to the OS X ecosystem. The fact that I can use iMessage on my phone or my 'puter, is really great. I also use FCP X for video editing. I have used Premiere Pro before, but I prefer FCP - I think it offers a smoother workflow. These are just two things I could thing of off the top of my head, but there are others for me to stay with OS X.

I am beginning to think I will just wait it out for the new rMBPs to be released, regardless of whether or not I can get one this financial year... I will just have to claim it on next year's tax if they are released/available after June. I guess I will just have to take my current MBPs power adapter with me everywhere I go til then! o_O Even though I 'need' a new computer now-ish, I am not prepared to spend AU$3700 on the current model, no matter that it is a great machine. It is still outdated tech with the processor and dGPU and I need it to last me at least as long as my current machine has...

Hi, I'm just wondering given that you have hackintosh experience, is it unthinkable to hackintosh an XPS 15 9550? From what I could gather in the last years model 9530 is that the wifi module needs to be swapped out but otherwise it should work fine. I'm just wondering if there are any other issues due to hardware incompatibility like lagging animations, not as smooth as rmbp, or anything of that sort that makes it a sub par experience?

Right, cause Apple has never copied or stole anything :/
Never copied?! Are you sure?!

And please stop that discussion about lack of OSX in other equipment. It is just there personal firmware and nothing else.
There is a Hackintosh somewhere, you can suffer with it if you dont want to suffer in Windows OS.
Apple is slow, they analyse competitors.. but the products are coming.

A Hackintosh is never going to be as good as a real Mac. It is as simple as that. The only 100% compatible hardware is Mac hardware. Having said that, I have had a few Hackintoshs over the past 6 years or so. All of them have been desktop PCs that I have put together myself, after a lot of research on http://www.tonymacx86.com. If you head over there, you will see that laptops are a totally different ball game. I have never tried to run OS X on a laptop. Most Winblows laptops run the Intel WiFi+Blutooth cards. These do not work under OS X (this is the same card that came with my H87N-WIFI mainboard in my Hackintosh and I swapped it out for a Broadcom). Because you are limited to the specific hardware the laptop manufacturer has chosen, there are likely to be a multitude of issues, apart from the WiFi. In many cases, people seem to have issues with trackpads (there are not going to be ANY gestures that work), keyboards, graphics drivers... all sorts of things. If you look at the list of 'compatible laptops', you will find that they are all older tech than Skylake - and this defeats the purpose. While I would say that I am reasonably knowledgeable in the ways of the Hackintosh, I would not be willing to have a go at getting a Skylake notebook working smoothly and without issue with OS X.

Sir, you are living in the past and you need to realize Apple isn't the king anymore. Apple is getting spanked when it comes to creativity and product features. If anything it's Apple playing catch up copying ideas while calling it something else. I love Apple products (mainly due to hating Windows), but to say in 2016 the competition is copying them is a total Apple sheep comment. Apple is way behind when it comes to a variety of things, they no longer set the standard.

if I buy the current MBP 15" base model,
then what are the possible features that I may miss on?

say for eg: 20-25 % more Cpu power, 40-50% more Gpu power,Redesign,Thinnes, USB C, Thunderbolt 3,better battery life,Space Gray Color.
what else do you think apple will add to new 2016 MBP 15"?

Increasingly, as Windows machines up their game, OS X is what it comes down to.

I'm not so tied into it as the programs I mainly use, Adobe/C4D, are on both...however. I do prefer OS X and my experience over the last 10 or so years since switching over to apple has been fairly smooth in terms of reliability and user experience.

I'm tied in also with phone/iMac...so I factor that in...

Thank you for the advice. That's really a shame cos I've grown a liking to the XPS 15 and was considering it over a rmbp, but I really like osx.. admittedly though my line of work wouldn't really require me any osx specific software so I could make the switch. Just I really like the convergence with other Apple devices.. oh well :(

iGPU will jump a LOT from Haswell to Skylake.
CPU is minor improvements, ~5-10%.
TB3/USB-C and battery life is a safe bet.
nobody is really sure if Apple will redesign it or not, though.

If need be you can run OS X on a VM. You have basic functionality that a Hackintosh might not give you, but you will still lack some features like AirDrop and have an overall worse experience than on an actual Mac. Also, a VM will probably burn out the XPS' battery in maybe 3-4 hours.
