*sniff sniff* yup, smells like troll
So I'm a troll because I want a beefy Mac Book Pro with the mobile Xeon and don't care if it's thin? I'm a troll because I wish Apple offered a wider range of notebook options at the higher end? My 2012 11 inch Air is perfect for travel.. My 27 iMac is fine for my office, and at home I want a beast of a MacBook Pro, and appreciate the screen size and internals Lenovo is offering, I used to love my 17 inch G4, that makes me a troll?! I smell something else, a sensitive little girl

No, you're trolling because what you want is so far removed from the direction Apple is taking the Macbook Pro line that it's almost laughable.

I want a Porsche 911R in black and a perfect reproduction of the Flugplatz corner in the Nürburgring as part of my driveway.

^^ that is as realistic a desire as what you just described.

You want hardcore, thick-bodied, multi-HDD? buy lenovo, or that EVGA monstrosity someone shared a couple of pages back. Don't expect the new macbook pros to be anything like what you described

Let me add.. I'm still using my 2008 MacBook Pro, and would have upgraded in 2014, but it didn't happen due to Intel BS.(pls don't point at the superficial upgrades since). Been waiting since then for the upgrade that never came.. And if you really knew your Macs, then you would know what I mean..

I don't expect it to be that... But I'm among friends here and it doesn't hurt to share a wish!! Which is different than an expectation

Both my desktop and my laptop are of 2008 vintage. The desktop is more or less plugging along ok. The laptop really needs to be replaced. I'll wait as long as I can. I'm rocking pro audio, so my needs aren't as intense as many of you visual types, but I am hoping to get machines to last as long as my 2008s have... so yeah... I'm concerned about upgradeability. Chances are I'll replace both computers when the upgrades are made available.

I have always enjoyed upgrading the HDD in my 08 MBP... But the last upgrade messed something up. Screen comes up funny and been using my air more often anyway. Really only got the air as a short term solution thinking I would get the MBP in 14. Got my gal the MacBook and it's great.. I love the keyboard and screen. Have some hopeful expectations that IF Apple updates more than just the CPU on the rMBP.. That they bring over that MB keyboard and a finger scanner from the iPhone would be great as I find myself trying to unlock 1password on my desktop with my finger LOL

In July 1976 the Apple I went on sale for $666.66 (aside: evil, much? hehe).

I hereby propose the theory that to celebrate 40 years of Apple computers (that's right, *computers*; indeed that product family which inspired and defined Apple for the majority of its corporate existence), Apple will announce on April 1st, 2016 (Apple's 40th anniversary since founding) an across-the-board update/refresh/redesign extravaganza for all Mac products, therewith astonishing and mesmerizing the lot of us with delicious computing delights that we dare not dream of.

I want to believe...

Instead of upgrade extravaganza, we got this...

NotebookCheck's Vaio Z Flip's review. This notebook is based on 28W Skylake-U GT3e, which should also power the next round of 13'' MBPs.

55-60% faster than Iris 6100 in synthetics, more than twice as fast @ actual games (Bioshock, Tomb Raider and Thief). On par (often faster) than a regular DDR3-based Geforce GT940M in games. Close to matching the Surface Book in most games.

Macbook Pro 13'' 2015 comparisons included.

Thanks to user Kallogan @ AnandTech.

So where is this guy that was so so sure it will be faster than 950m ddr5 ? :) Big improvement but still not enough for AAA games.

You had a misunderstanding.
The Vaio Z use an Iris 550 / GT3e, while the GPU you're referring to is the Iris Pro 580 GT4e, which hasn't yet any benchmarks (as much as I remember...), but still is probably going to have quite similar performances to the 950m
;)

About the 40 years anniversary... so no new watchbands?! I'm really disappointed o_O

It says blatantly it is HD550, not HD580. HD580 will be as fast as GTX950M with GDDR5.

P.S. The reason why Nvidia brought GTX 950 desktop with 75W(768 CUDA core GPU) is because there is absolutely no point in buying any dGPU under that or R7 370, because of HD580 performance.

Coincidence?

And how it that happen if 950m at full hd extra high in metal gear solid 5 is 2.67x (!) faster than iris 550 and in Metro last light 2.05x times faster? And iris 580 is like 1.5 of iris 550 on spec so less in real life scenario. Also mobile pascal and polaris is on the corner. And as far I remeber you were sure that iris 550 will be on pair with 940m ddr5, nope, it isn't ;)

Well they look like that now and as you can see, are certainly not 'boxy'...is that a bad thing? Apple have ripped loads themselves to make better products.

I hope it makes apple raise their game.

I know they've ripped their share, I'm with you on hoping they raise their game. Hey Apple: innovation isn't just incremental hardware upgrades. Innovation is taking the power of your Mac Pro and putting it in a MacBook Air. :D One can only hope.

Did you even checked the results on notebookcheck? HD550 IS faster than GT940M in games.

I think it is good time to start ignoring your responses. You are trying to prove to the world that we NEED discreet GPUs. Maybe, maybe not. Its not me to decide what is best for you. What I say is that if you have HD580 you do not need anything that is below or on the same level which is: GTX950M levels, or lower. That is all.

Did you ever read what I worte ? 940m ddr5 version is much faster
Ok, Im ignoring you from now on. GTX940M GDDR5 version is Microsoft Surface only, and its called 940MX.

Secondly, we talked about GDDR5 version of GTX950M in comparison to HD580. From the beginning I was saying that HD550 will be on par with GTX940M/GT650M/GT750M.
Thirdly: Rise of the Tomb Raider, 1366x768, medium settings, HD550: 18.9 FPS according to notebookcheck
The same game, the same resolution, the same details, GTX940MX(GDDR5) - 22.4
Is this not on similar level of performance?

Do not bother to respond, because I will not.

I dont really understand how making decides smaller and thinner, when the technology allows them to make things smaller and thinner, is "ripping a page" our of Apples playbook. They all build what Intel allows them to.

Well it's all about supply and demand, high school and college kids want thinner and lighter laptops, so makers supply them.

Intel doesn't restrict them, the only restriction is thermodynamics. The elements of a devices can only take so much heat and your processor can only run so fast until you up the voltage. Voltage = heat, too much heat = dead processor. That's just keeping it simple. Intel basically states processor A can only withstand 66.7 degrees Celsius at the case. If it get's hotter than that then things start melting. They also state how far other components need to be from the processor so it doesn't receive the heat from those other devices and the heat from the processor isn't transferred to those devices. It's all about balance between heat dispersion and cooling power. The smaller you make a device the lower your cooling power becomes.

As far as ripping a page out of Apple's playbook, well Apple designed the MacBook Air after running numerous calculations on thermodynamics, after about 3 years, Dell and Acer came out with their own very similar models. The same triangular bottom half, even the lip near the front bottom casing, not to mention the gloss black outline around the display itself. The only thing that is different is the hardware inside, but I'm sure the layouts are very close to one another. So yes they ripped off Apples MacBook Air design, that does not mean Apple is without guilt (Xerox anyone?).

I agree with you. I'd go for a 17 but am sure the 17 MBP is dead. So I hope they just remove the bezels on the new MBP to give a 16" I don't care about thinner lighter I need the power, the present version is thin enough. If they can do both fine. But to those willing to sacrifice performance for thinner/lighter you are the trolls and need to go to the MBAir area.
