God I love you guys. People like you make following this thread bearable.
They could probably start their own YouTube version of Razor and Blade.

This is how the battery on my 8 year old Windows laptop is doing:

Repupjo.png

4 minutes is an overestimation, I expect no more than 2 minutes until it dies. It's still very useful when the cable is accidentally pulled out or when I want to change power outlet. :D

About the MacBooks, does the battery usually get that bad? I have a 5 year old iPad 2 that I have used for about 5 hours almost every day (it's my main computer) and I still get about 8 hours of battery life. I thought newer batteries didn't usually degrade to less than 60-70% of the original capacity.

I had a 3 year old MacBook Pro that gave me about 3 hours (out of the factory 8 hours) battery life at half dim brightness and idle. Almost 2 hours at full brightness. I'm just ready for a new battery tech to come out that replaces Lithium.

I have a 2010 MBA and the battery lasts for about an hour while watching YouTube videos. Maybe 2 to 3 hours when using Word/Pages and general internet browsing. It used to last 8 to 10 hours doing that kind of stuff.

I have been trying to sell my iPad Pro but everyone is bailing out on me, any recommendations guys?

Keep it as a reminder not to waste your money just because the newest thing comes out. Seriously, the thing hasn't even been out for half a year.

Edit: I'm fully aware that you might have been joking, but even if you are there are a lot of people here who don't see anything wrong with that sentiment.

So true, that first statement! In the tech world, although the newest, flashiest product seems the best, it's not always that way. Just hope that isnt the case for the new Skylake rMBP.

Early 2011 MBP. Just coming up to 700 cycles, battery capacity hovers between 55-65%.
Lasts about an hour usually on battery - not great, but hey ho. Almost pulled the trigger on a 2015 13" rMBP last year, but decided to wait. Hope it's worth it...
I just noticed mine saying the same thing! Looks like it skipped "Replace Soon" and "Replace Now" and just went straight to "Service Battery". My early 2011 MBP is almost at 900 cycles, and I have 76% capacity. It fluctuates between 75% and 80%.

LOL dude... never ever buy in the spur of moment when new things come out from Apple. It isn't usually a flop, but within give or take 6 months iPad Pro 9.7 is out... Sad that iPad Pro is already becoming obsolete...

I still have a vintage 2006 MBP that I use everyday (though I switched to an Anker battery). That should make me waiting for skylake world champion?

Sold my 12" PowerBook a few years ago. Oh the regrets.

I had the 2006, it was replaced due to a fan issue with the 2007.. and I'm still using it from time to time. :D Good thing is we can easily change out our batteries, as notebooks should be able to do!

Very interesting.

I think power will be the underpinning theme of this new MBP.

Being able to work (light development) for 10 or 12 hours on a single charge will revolutionize the way people work. I can move around my office, pop out to another office, do a presentation, go visit a client, operate my computer in the back seat of my car, etc. All without having to worry about where the socket is.

I feel this will be the last MBP "laptop" form factor. I am sure it will be excellent. Unlike HP and their half-assed attempts, Apple wouldn't release anything that wasn't excellent.

I (sadly) see this happening too. And like you said, it will be a great computer, with an amazing battery life.
A 4k screen is probably not going to happen. It's such a battery drainer for a very slightly better visual experience. The retina screens are absolutely amazing!

I do have mixed feelings about the iGPU & dGPU situation. On one hand I wish they would keep the option for a dGPU, but on the other hand they could save that space and make it slightly thinner, less thermally vulnerable and overall, more reliable.

But right now we are in a grey area where we don't know if the Iris Pro 580 will be able to handle high quality video editing etc. So it makes me rethink if they should leave out the dGPU entirely.
If Iris Pro 580 is powerful enough as people have speculated here, then I can easily see the dGPU vanish from the MacBook lineup.

We'll see what happens ;)

I must say it is getting less ugly when you've come across it a couple of times :)
(digitally of course)

The Spectre isn't bad but I think they pushed Apple over the edge...

Now Apple will be manically trying to make it thinner than 10mm... World's first 9mm laptop with no ports at all! Those jokes about a razor thin laptop from Apple that's so thin that it's invisible doesn't seem so funny now...

Ladies and gents, this laptop is so thin you can see right thru it.

I won't be "sad" to see the end of the laptop form factor. I will be nostalgic for laptops and am looking forward to the future.

Just right now, tablet + keyboard/mouse isn't powerful enough and isn't suitable for developers/designers/pro users. It will happen eventually though.

Not sure about this "video editing" stuff. Why? I don't do any of this stuff on the go (nor do most MBP users AFAIC).

Why this insistence for additional accelerator cards? (dGPUs) Surely we should be doing all our computations on one piece of silicon for power and performance reasons? Modern Intel CPUs (such as Skylake) have extra instruction sets on-board accelerators and optimisations that make is harder and harder to justify a separate dGPU.

Frankly, I'm sick of hearing clap-trap about how we "must" have a dGPU. It's baloney. If you need an external accellerator card, go get a machine with a PCIe slot and stick in a Tesla or a Xeon Phi or whatever it is you need to do whatever it is that's so important and must run on battery.

The iPad Air 2 is just about the same. Snappiness in regards to milliseconds won't move mountains. I still have to read the web page using at least a minute or two.

The 4K question is interesting because everything else apple does is pushing 'more pixels'...phone 4K film, iMac 5K screen etc...I dont think it's just a trend as 4K will probably be 'the norm' in 5 or so years...at the moment a lot of companies are loathe to produce 4K content because of the time/cost issues.

I think they'll bump it ;)

Some people leave their home.

In which case, two separate pieces of silicon (one of which is a dGPU) will eat your battery.

Also, memory bandwidth to a separate GPU sucks.

Also, modern CPU architectures (such as Skylake) have extra instructions and are faster/quicker/more power efficient making dedicated GPU co-processing more and more unjustifiable.

Undoubtedly there are many cases where CPU + GPU = increased performance. However, there are also many cases where iGPU outperforms CPU + GPU (memory bandwidth constrained problems).

On balance, a dGPU makes no sense. Maybe as an option with the i7 model, but for 99% of users, it's unnecessary.

Don't know how it can be an option without ruining the design and aesthetics. Simplest thing is to buy a proper Tesla or Xeon Phi or whatever. Acceleration over USB-C could be an option for these users.

This isn't really that accurate, unless you constantly have the dGPU activated.

This would clearly depend on the card, but it's very far from a universal truth. Particularly with the Polaris/Pascal cards coming out.

You have any source for that number?

Or YOU could choose to buy a unit without a dGPU and not impose your personal needs on everyone else.
