Think point being - iGPU have reached a level of performance (Iris 550 and especially 580) that makes it really hard to justify the additional computing power with a dGPU compared to all the draw backs - heat, power consumption, noise and finally price.

This is partially true, the 580 is a mid-high end class 2 graphics card, the only real need to get away from that is when you get to the high-end of gaming and visual production work. I have to give Intel credit for their iGPUs they have made leaps and bounds since they first came out, starting off in the low-mid class ranges and now able to compete with some of the mid-range class 2s. I'm interested to see what the engineers can do, I'll almost be willing to bet a quarter that in the next 5 years we will see NVidia, AMD, and Intel duking it out for the top Class 1 graphics card.

Frankly, I'm sick of hearing clap-trap about how we "must" have a dGPU. It's baloney. If you need an external accellerator card, go get a machine with a PCIe slot and stick in a Tesla or a Xeon Phi or whatever it is you need to do whatever it is that's so important and must run on battery.

Or, some people are students, maybe design students, and they need graphic power for their projects.
And students move. They move a lot.

Anyway, I understand how the major part of Mac users don't need all that graphic power, and I'm fine with that.
Still, I don't like very much to see Apple putting a wonderful-yet-mid-class GPU in a 2300€ laptop.
That really sounds stingy to me.
And for the first time, Apple could be capable of put a decent dGPU without wear the battery.

So please Apple, keep the dGPU option and stick in a Polaris!

I think Apple is aware of the issue and they will offer both options. To have dGPU and to have iGPU only.

I demand innovation with a 13mm thick MacBook and SLI Titan Xs.

I just noticed mine saying the same thing! Looks like it skipped "Replace Soon" and "Replace Now" and just went straight to "Service Battery". My early 2011 MBP is almost at 900 cycles, and I have 76% capacity. It fluctuates between 75% and 80%.
I have an iPhone 4 that turned itself off and demanded to be connected to a charger before it would let me turn it back on when it had a 75% charge.

i wonder how will they justify a 2500+€ laptop without dgpu, probably they'll have to stop offering a laptop at that price alltogether?

also, what do we know so far about polaris? are all the praises based on real benchmark tests or only marketing claims? what's the % gain over hd580 and at which tdp?

Never thought I would see Bevis & Butthead and dGPU brought up in the same conversation. Lol

It's fine because I have been watching PC videos about PC's I would never buy just because I have no new Mac to look at. I think all of us are losing it a bit.

You should watch the episode where they do tech support.

Right there with you, anything over 1500 should include a dGPU, but the least they can do is put a dGPU in a 13" model.
