Are 1st gen products as bad as people imply on these forums? It's getting me a little worried... I need a new laptop so so bad my 2010 models hard drive failed and I can't access the osx partition. I've been getting by just using bootcamp because I can't justify buying the old model when I've waited this long and I'm hopefully nearly at the finish line! Earlier this year I did buy an xps 13 which lasted a few days before i sent it back so that and Using boot camp full time has reassured me though that I couldn't use a windows only laptop!
you know you can get a pretty decent new hard drive for as low as 50 bucks?
that'll give you time to evaluate instead of rushing over a new buy.
i assume you have a spinning hdd, since in 2010 ssds weren't that common, in that case, an ssd would make your laptop feel really faster.
honestly, i have a 2010 i5 mbp, i don't do any extreme heavy task on it, but with 8gb ram and ssd running W10 virtualised is a breeze. sure a new laptop will be faster at it, but mine is still as usable.

I compleatly agre with you of course Apple Will release a quad core. But Apple loves the wow factor!! and making an interesting presenting while introducing a new product can't be done just by explaining performance numbers.. "We made it paper thin and kept just as fast as the competition" and "you can get it in four colors including pink" is the usually selling points and can be understood and remembered by the less tech savvy (which is 90% of the global market). As someone mentioned in this thread there isn't any 13 inch quad cores on the market, at least not with a sleek design. Perhaps Apple will make a 14 inch quad core then.. But anyway 1 generations always have issues remember the introduction of retina screens, the first rMBP were very laggy even on normal websites and pdf's..

Sent from my iPhone

let me be mean:
What kind of "wow factor" -- "wow it's pink ?"

Today I went to iSpot and checked out the difference between butterfly keyboard on MP and regular keyboard on MBP side by side. Since I still prefer the regular one I don't see the butterfly one as an end of the world. It's pretty much good. Wouldn't diss the upcoming release if it has one. Just to enrich the discussion :)

I don't mind the butterfly but the keyboard on the MBP is still better. I have a feeling the butterfly is coming to the MBP and it's going to be better than how it is on the MB.

for people that doesn't write a lot, the current MBP keyboard is better because of the feeling, but for those who are writers or write a lot, the mb butterfly is a lot better, and i hate the bleed around the keys from my MBP...

If they utilize the butterfly keyboard for the new MBP, I hope it'll be far more like the the Magic Keyboard, with it's new scissor mechanism, than the MacBook keyboard. The MBP will be thicker, so there will be room for the Magic Keyboard improvements such as greater travel, I hope. I bet they can take the travel of the MK and pair it with a butterfly mechanism, right?

As a writer (who writes a lot) I am so satisfied with the present MBP and MBA keyboards. Surely, I hope a new MBP model this summer will have a keyboard that is as good as these those of the present MBP and MBA, and much much better than the shallow and clicky one of the present MB retina.

If the new MBP has a design similar to MBA (thin in front, not to make my wrists bleed) and a good keyboard I'll be upgrading.

If on the other hand it has the rMB keyboard, I'm holding on to my MBA and thanking heavens I managed to get it in time.

That Best Buy deal is making the rMBP look real tempting for someone that has a dying old computer. However, it's also a giant sign waving "new models are coming soon".

The next 40+ days are going to feel like 400+.

Edit: I wanted to add that I think the keyboard will have slightly more travel than the rMB. I actually prefer the less travel, after playing with my gf rMB my keyboard felt dated/mushy.

it probably makes sense to do this anyway so you can sell it as a fully functioning laptop.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do the Skylake chips that fit the 15'' Macbook Pro support 5K Displays? I read somewhere that Skylake didn't support Displayport 1.3 and that was the issue?

No. My first gen MBP (2006) is running while my 2008 succumbed to nvidia issues and i'm still waiting for my 2011 to fall over. Sure any product will have its issues. People who say a 2016 Macbook, should it exist, would be guaranteed to have issues or will be a crap first gen product, well, check to see what rMBP they have, probably a 2015. We can play the same games all day. "Not getting the 2016 rMBP because it will be crap next to the true 2018 rMBP.":rolleyes:

Apple won't leave it on the side of the road "oh its first gen, don't bother us." That's what Applecare is for. We will all be rewarded for our patience and it will be a beautiful machine. The haters can watch from the other side.

I got clipped off my bike last night coming home from work ( freelance, just started new job) ...my trusty ol' 17" laptop took a bit of a knock, screen 'wonky' and I might need to buy a new laptop before WDDC...hopefully I can wing it for another month or so and work from home on my new iMac..what to do!?!?!?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Not the 17". Say it aint so.

Have you tried using an external display? If everything still works i'd rock that for another month.

I think you can have through thunderbolt 3 a 4k@60 hz or a 5k @30 hz

It's been my trusty companion for six years :(

I've not tried external screen yet, got a bit of whiplash tbh!

Sure it'll be fine but I'm on site in London, dunno if they have a spare screen...I'll try one of my mine, but I'll hopefully swing em round to me working from home on the iMac.

Better all round once they get over their paranoia about people 'slacking off at home' anyhow...

Wow, glad you are OK. Sorry this happened and put you in a tough spot. I guess it goes back to the old saying "if you need a computer now, buy one." We are less than 2 months away, if you can wait, it will be worth it.

Thank you.

Yep...I think I should be able to hang on and at least see what apple offer up in WWDC ( if anything!)

If nothing comes then, it'll either be 'refurb Mac' + iPad Pro (other drawing device) or Dell XPS + iPad (other drawing device) or a workstation, Lenovo p50/Dell precision....

Thunderbolt 3 doesn't support DP 1.3 but it supports 2 streams of DP 1.2. This means that a single USB-C cable can drive two 4k60p or a single 5k60p.

A normal USB-C port (no Thunderbolt) using USB 3.1 Gen 2 can only drive one 4K60p.

pro will be slightly underpowered and then we´ll see performance upgrades according to the tick tok model over the next five years.

I do hope you realize that Intel's tick-tock model is dead. Just so you're not disappointed in the years to come.

My 2012 rMBP is still doing most of my daily activities ok, (vectorworks, autocad, qlab, and photoshop), but my hd is constantly full and my back is really feeling the weight these days (I commute on the train and walk a lot). I got a 9.7 iPad Pro recently and LOVE the true tone display. I've been taking that to work/school instead when I can but when it comes to the drafting I really need my mac book pro. Hoping for a smaller (lighter) form, hoping it retains HDMI and a thunder bolt port, space grey, true tone, real keyboard, smaller bezel.
