Guys when the new MBPs come out are you going to get 8 or 16 gb ram? I want this to last a while but its an extra $200 to get the 16 gb (assuming prices are the same for the new mbps). Is it worth it?

Me personally, 32 GB if that option is available.

For you, it depends on what you're using your computer for. We can't give you a good recommendation without knowing what you do on your computer and what types of programs you use.

For the short answer, if you're a very light/casual user who just wants a fast computer, 8 GB should be ok.

Edit:

If you use google chrome you're going to need to get the 32GB option.

Yes, it's worth it to get 16GB RAM, especially if you are going to keep your machine for years as it is soldered onto the logic board. I've had 16GB of RAM in my MBP for years now, and honestly, I don't think it's enough and want to move up to 32GB.

I'll be getting 16 GB.

On my old 13" retina MBP (2012 model), I had 8 and I often found it was using 95% of the memory with several programs open. Even on my Windows desktop I approach 60% of the 8 GB being used on a normal day. I'd like to never have to think about how much is being used, so I'm going for the 16 GB.

Hate the $200 racket though...

I have a space grey 2016 Mbp here on my desk. Not only does the Apple logo still glow, if you press the new key (next to the power button key), it flashes different colors. If you press the option key and the new key, it ejects a tiny little apple-shaped disco ball.

You've been around for a few years and I vouch for your creditability (I mean, who doesn't like disco balls?). We have another source guys! Everyone, pile on the questions!!!

What would you guys think of an Apple logo that's illuminated around the edges and metal in the center? Just a thought.

That'd be pretty sweet. Visualizing it made me think of some sort of IronMan suit.

(yes I know the vignette bands look awful its 00:40 and can't be arsed)

lol, but then I'd just be staring at the back of my laptop screen all day.

This x1,000....I share a pc at work with a few people and every time one of them has chrome open I have to close it and use ie, chrome regularly uses 4gig of ram by itself....in fact I added more ram to the company computer with my own $ to help combat just this since they insist on using it

One question that has been bugging me about potential new "15 skylake processors: Why does Intel offer both the i7-6770HQ and the i7-6780HQ at the same price (tray: $434)? http://ark.intel.com/compare/93336,93340,93341
The 6780 has higher cache (8MB vs 6MB) and a higher base/turbo/graphics frequency (2.7/3.6/1GHz vs 2.6/3.5/0.95GHz).
  • With such large differences, why does Intel charge the same tray price for both chips?
  • Further, why would any manufacturer choose the 6770 over the 6870 if they were the same price? Availability, exclusivity contracts, features, or what?
The i7-6790HQ bumps up the frequency another 0.1GHz (and same cache) at the cost of another $189 (tray price $623), which makes sense, though is a big premium. Got to be a reason for 6770-6870 differences, but I'm stumped.

Is the power consumption the same as well or different?

The prices at Intel's ark site don't matter at all, especially for mobile processors.
Out of personal experience: Big OEMs usually pay around 1/2 of the official prices, maybe an even bigger supply-chain-hardliner like Apple is able to get down the price even more.

We aren't talking about 3 different chips, they are all the same chip.
Differences are even too low for yield being the reason, they are just lasercutting cache and changing the clockspeed.

I can't tell you the reason why but certainly this will not matter for Apple to offer both CPUs because this has been the same previous generations as well - http://ark.intel.com/compare/76087,76086,76085,76090,76089,76088,83505,83504,83503,87717,87719,87720 .

Can't wait to buy one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102166

I'll post 580 benchmarks once I get one. Like I did with the 550. Though I imagine it could be a week or longer before I get one.

Oh you got 550 benchmarks? Care to post a link - seems i missed that :)
[doublepost=1462969455][/doublepost]Actually desperate enough to search the tread myself - here are the benchmarks provided by @Mattsasa.

What CPU were used in the tests? The i5 or i7?

Iris 550 (Vaio Z Flip):

Heroes of the Storm - (1920x1080)
High Settings 30-45fps
Medium 60-80fps lowest I saw was 50 something

Battlefield 4 -
(1920x1080) - Low Settings: 35-50fps
(1280x720) - Low Settings : 70-90fps, always above 60
(1280x720) - Medium Settings: 50-70fps

Civilization: Beyond Earth (1920x1080)
High Settings 30-35fps
Medium settings 35-50fps

Diablo 3 (1920x1080) - NoAA - All settings as high as they go! :
most of the time around 60-80fps. Some big fights with lots going on dipped into the 50s
At (2560x1440) frames stayed in the 40-50fps range

I honestly expected better results across the board. Perhaps new drivers and game updates will optimize more.

Here is the 3DMark bench of iris pro 580 with the i7-6770HQ. Could anyone can compare it with gtx 960m, gtx 950m and iris pro 5200 ? Thanks

MacBook Pro news on the front page. It's all about the little things, guys.

Our patience is getting Apple concerned.

Good job guys!

After all this time in the dark...

Apple used to advertised their Macbook lines as having the best tech in them to justify their exorbitant prices. But since 2012, Apple has fallen behind their competitors in the tech department offerings and yet Apple's exorbitant prices remain. So is anyone really surprised that their Macbook Pro sales are down 40%? Apple and Tim Cook have gotten too arrogant with their pricing of Apple products.

40% quarter-over-quarter drop in sales is probably enough to get Tim Cook's attention. Unless he misinterprets that to think nobody is interested in MBs.
I wonder how can they still sell it in Europe with the ludicrous prices the apply.

2299€ for a base 15" without dgpu?? srsly?
in 2010 i paid 1800€ for the medium configuration (higher screen res bto, good ol' times), and dgpu was standard.

Source: Next MBP supports some of the "Pro" features built into the iPad Pro line - namely, the pencil, and the device will support orientations that make pen use viable. Software support will be included in MacOS, hence holding the device for WWDC. June announcement, early July availability.
