As time goes on, it's gotten to the point now that if Apple releases updated MBP's that look exactly the same, does it even matter? It's gotta be a redesign, and it's got to look freakin' awesome.

I'd be fine if they throw in skylake processors, and two tb3s in the current design..
THATS IT!
I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

EU prices always include VAT.
i'm not familiar with the VAT taxation in the US, but i know many who bought macs while travelling/on holidays in the US, because you can save a lot of money, though that's not strictly legal.
(you also end up with a different keyboard layout, and 'over-mapping' doesn't always work neatly, depending on what you're trying to do)
Not "strictly legal" for a traveler to the US to buy a computer whilst there??

Are you kidding? Why would doing so be in any way illegal?

It's just not legal the way most people do it.
The biggest saving is VAT, but you have to register your device at customs and pay your country's VAT, which obviously most people won't do.

Guys, just to add another level in the speculations here...

I keep reading here and there possible rumors about a price cut for the upcoming rMBPs. No sources gets cited, just a bunch of speculations on a few blogs and tech sites.
Just to be cleare, with "price cut" I mean they are referring to a possible lower price of these new machines compared to previous releases.
Do you believe something like this is possible?

I was wondering the same thing, I have seemed those rumors too.

Would make sense to do a small price drop, because sales are down.

Though I don't think I believe it.

the current rMBP sells at $1299 same as rMB. It seems odd to me to sell the rMBP for less than the rMB

So then maybe it's cuts to the upgraded models to bring the spread down and entice people to upgrade more from the base models?

Buying the computer is not the illegal part. The illegal part is when you bring it into the EU without declaring it to customs and paying the taxes you are supposed to (VAT and customs).

US prices hardly ever include sales tax, which varies city by city and state by state. It's 0% in some places (Oregon) and 10% in others (Chicago).

And I still believe the rMB is way overpriced.
I mean, seriously? Those prices for such a machine which, according to tests and reviews seen so far, is underperforming compared to the good old MBA?

Naaah! If they are really going to discontinue the MBA and leave MB price so high, the only option left is the rMBP IMHO...hoping this won't be disappointing

Yeah - thats why, if you can, and you are buying any tech or expensive gear in the USA as an overseas resident - its always best to try and order it on-line and get it shipped inter-state - to an address in a different location - and in that way you can side-step the State sales tax (usually).

That would be nice. though even if they left the prices as is. The rMBP is still quite a bit cheaper than it's PC counterparts.

maybe they will drop the price of the rMB and also release a 14" rMB with a 15W CPU.... once can dream.

@Serban hear anything about a larger rMB?

It is legal as breathing...
EU VAT varies from 17 to 25% (full list is on page 3 here: http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_custom...tion/vat/how_vat_works/rates/vat_rates_en.pdf). Also You can do VAT return in airports if you are not a citizen of US.
And you dont have to declare everything in your pockets, bags etc. You have to declare cash if it exceeds more than some quota, $10k or something.

This kind of logic assumes processors will continue to advance at the same rate they did when Moore's law held true. I don't see that happening for a few reasons.

1) Physics: this one is self-explanatory. One need only read up on the challenges of smaller and smaller processor architectures to see that, unless some new model of computing is invented, processor gains are about to hit a brick wall.

2) Economics: this is a bit trickier to explain. The rapid growth of technology in the past 30-40 years has been funded largely by consumer-level purchases. But the average consumers don't even need advanced processors now, since all they really need is something to watch Netflix on, browse the Internet and add filters to their pictures. The processors in phones are all they need, and all they wil ever need. With the average consumer taken out of the upgrade loop, you should expect to see all computing devices take a nose-dive in sales. Funding for research will decrease. This, in combination with the above physical limitations, will mean a much slower upgrade cycle than we're used to.

I don't expect the iPhone of 2026 to be more capable compared to 2016 models than the 2016 phones are to 2013 models. For consumers this will be fine, but professional and advanced consumers will need machines capable of handling more intensive tasks. Those devices will have to be larger form factor and have software to match, so I expect desktop/laptop models to persist.

I dont see office users like Accountants, CEOs, CFOs, clerks etc will work on ipads...that's a huge user segment. Forget. We input a lot of data. Ipads simply are not capable to do this at this point.

Sigh, reading all of the news of Apple of throwing the idea of ending iTunes music downloads is so depressing. Makes you wonder how much this company's going to change within the next 3-4 years

Apple had bad decisions, very bad decisions and successful decisions. It won't throw it. It will upgrade it into something new at some point.
Also there are alternatives as well.

regarding the price drop...

I think they should do the price drop. Few years back there was a real value to the mac line. They were ahead of time and so on. These days, even if they bring the freshness to the table, they are still not that unique after all. Look at the relative counterparts in Dell, Lenovo... they are cheaper and still quite outstanding. I'm just saying that it would be really fine for Apple to make a price drop and I believe that would make the sales go sky high. But on the other hand I don't think it's gonna happen. they will put the price tag out of the blue and people will follow.

I base my opinion on prices in Poland.

I agree 100%. It doesn't have to be a huge drop, 100$/€ is enough for me, it will be a little more than a xps 13, but you get the trackpad and OSX for that money.

keep calm and trust insider information bros. hopefully we will see today/tomorrow real life 580 test results :) keep fingers crossed

If Apple wasn't planning on implementing the 580 & 550, we would have already seen an update back in March.
In recent years, Apple has always used the Intel Iris Pro GT4e chips for its MacBook Pro line.

They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't implement it.

I completely agree with you - but i believe Apple have already started the process of shooting themselves in the foot:
