When in the last 10 years has Apple ever updated a computers ports without a full redesign?

I can think of one time. My Early 2011 MacBook Pro was just a refresh and it kept the 2008 design, however Apple added a Thunderbolt port. Of course, the Thunderbolt interface used the Mini Display port, but I think it might count.

Late 2008 to Mid 2009 13" MBP added SD Card reader and Firewire with no other cosmetic changes (this transformed the Unibody 13" MB into the 13" MBP).

yay it's coming! :) a major software update like this has to come along with a major hardware update... The mics would probably have to be better placed or a couple more included. I'd say redesign and new rMBPs at WWDC are definitive!

This. That's why I think WWDC will come and go without new MBPs.

+1. I agree.

I am afraid looking at the availability of Polaris dGPU (in large quantities for production), I still think it will be September release for 15" MBP.

September is event for ios10 release iphone 7 , apple watch second gen

So minor spec bump and 'revolutionary' Siri feature.. :/
Well hopefully not a minor spec bump, but surely a change in design would be expected to optimise it more for the new features. We would probably be looking at something beyond ports and display and perhaps a fairly unique design?

Checked it, not seeing any newer Macs listed than the current product line.

Thanks! They probably learned from the last leak and try to avoid that now. I mean, they lose money if people know 100% that new macs are coming because nobody would buy the old ones now..

Huh. My 2012 is still running strong, and I'm actually feeling a bit guilty for thinking of upgrading it.
That's what I thought, but I recently bought my sister a 12" Rose Gold for her birthday and I almost took it from her because the speed difference was unbearable. I've been doing more of my work that doesn't require data analysis on my iPad Pro as well because I can't even type fast without noticing lag. It's a shame they still sell the mid-2012 MBP to be honest.

I never understood keeping it secret for an aging product line whose sales are declining. Computers are a major purchasing decision. There are people out there that may buy another system entirely and then you've lost that customer for 3-5 years or longer if they don't come back. I would leak laptop and desktop iterations, and keep phone and tablet announcements water tight.

I suppose Apple only cares about iOS developers (as that's where most of their profits are from), and those guys are tied to OS X no matter what. So, ironically, Apple doesn't care when it's released.

Unlikely. OS 10.12 (or macOS) will likely work 100% with my current 2012 rMBP. I don't see them disabling a feature from running on older hardware. What sort of special mic would be needed? Siri works just fine on my phone, so I'd imagine it works fine on my laptop.

Well on the software level it will work with any macOS device with a microphone obviously, but I'd imagine to improve performance they would want to place forward facing microphones as opposed to the current side facing ones. To expand, with the iPhone the dual microphones are placed below where one would normally expect them to be placed and where it is natural for the user to use. It works ok with a distance as well but not as well as an Amazon Echo would for example as that device has 7 mics.

While the side facing mics on the current rMBP would be good enough for most cases I think it would be worth while to have at least one front facing mic to improve performance and perhaps have the rMBP act as a temporary HomeKit hub.

With the Google Home announcement today at their I/O keynote, I imagine Apple's software development to proceed in a similar manner and they will want to incorporate a lot of the features from Viv to offer a truly beneficial experience. Part of that is also the necessity to place the mics in a sensible place. Then again I'm not really an expert in this and just sharing suggestions :)

aaaaand what if?

edit. i'm obviously referring, in a little sarcastic way, to the google I/O keynote that it's just ended. in some of the slide a "wild macbook pro lookalike" made his appearance.

Erm, the specs that WCCFTech thought were for P10 and P11 were for rebranded GPUs from previous generation, and 28 nm.

There is no polaris GPU revealed yet, with specs. AMD does good job in keeping everything very secret.

Did we talk about this? There's a specific Polaris 11 mobile chip that seems to fit the necessary requirements for the MBP. Right?

The R7 460x?

The R9 400 series specs actually released so far are rebadged chips from previous years. The speculated gap in that series that could be Polaris 11 (14nm) chips are 480 and 480x but yes, if they crush current 28nm chips with a power rating of 50W they would seem perfect for new MBP. If that transpires and they announce MBP in June with Polaris dGPU I will throw money at whoever will take my order, so if anyone has any theories speak up!

In case you are wondering, I want a desktop replacement that I can play undemanding games on for the next few years. I'm typing on a 2010 MBA so I expect my products to last.

Front facing speakers... Front facing mics.... Could this be..? :p

You know, I've come to the conclusion that even if Apple releases a nice, new MBP at WWDC very few people on MacRumors will actually be satisfied with it...have you seen the way that people complain about Apple on here these days? They could do everything correctly and launch a kick ass machine and yet the majority of people on here (I'm talking about the forum in general, not the fantastic people in this thread ;) ) will find something to moan and complain about. Apple has built people's expectations up so much over the years that it's come to the point that they won't be able to win no matter what, especially now that their competitors have finally wised up on how to build computers that don't suck donkey balls.

When the retina Macbook Pro first came out, there were a lot of people bemoaning the loss of the optical drive and ethernet port. "Apple is doomed" yadda yadda. It was pretty sad. People are going to complain about something.

This forum in general is pretty sad these days. I'm actually thinking of leaving and going somewhere else to talk about Apple products, because I really don't like the atmosphere anymore. It was much better years ago IMO. Sure, there has always been those that said "Apple is doomed" but these days, it seems like it's the majority of people are just so negative about everything. Now, I understand that Apple deserves lots of criticism these days, but I would much rather deal with it in a rational manner instead of the craziness I see here all the time now.
