You know how for last WWDC, last September, this March...eh I might be missing some...we got all HYPED days before...and then went into depression after the disappointment. How about this time we just don't wait for WWDC. You know not get excited about it.
Just be Meh about it. MEH!!!

And maybe then the universe and Apple will decide to surprise us with new shiny rMbPs. You know when we're least expecting them.

That's kosher brother, it's kosher.

So I've been thinking about the MacBook Pro 15 (my next purchase) and the display. I desperately want 1050p HiDPI or 4k, but I was thinking about performance enhancements other than the DCI-P3 colour gamut and wider aperture pixels from the MacBook. What if they include a refresh rate that's adjustable on the screen to save power like the iPad Pro. I mean think about when you expand to full screen on Youtube the refresh rate of the screen matches the refresh rate of the video to save power if it's less than what I assume the standard for the screen is at 60Hz.

Also, the Thunderbold Display. I want a 5k one to go along with my MacBook Pro and everyone is averse to a MST display over the Displayport 1.2 protocol (and most likely two cables - I'm with you all on this being a mess). However, isn't the current or at least first gen 5k iMac MST over Apple's proprietary TCON (as Displayport wasn't up to it)?? Now bare with me.... I know the idea about putting a GPU in the display is never going to happen (face reality) but if Apple already has the hardware to take a data stream and make a perfectly good 5k Display (I've yet to see a complaint about the screen having any glitches - I may be wrong) why can't they use this TCON and merge all the data from PCI-e over Thunderbolt 3? This provides a single cable and no need for a GPU in the screen. Heck if what I'm assuming is possible, an update in the past two years to this TCON chip could allow them to make it HDR and SST capable given how much bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 has?

Am I wrong?

P.S. Also they could add that brilliant screen coating that gives the iPad Pro the lowest reflective attributes of any display according to Displaymate.

The Siri deal in the dock 'leak' makes me shudder to think what horrid pathway Apple is planning with MBPs. Go back to Nvidia (why did they move away from them in the first place?), stop with super duper thin while getting rid of everything else (if I wanted an iPad, I'd have bought an iPad). Put in parts that are not rehashed or two + years old. I mean, the thing costs $3000... make it worth that money already.

WWDC = meh. I've not been impressed since the 2012 iMacs with the 680MX (which I own and sits in the closet for now tbh). I won't justify shelling out the big bucks for a machine that's quite frankly subpar to many others in the same price range on the market nowadays. But mainly this whole 'go thin or go home' crapola with the MBPs is becoming a deal breaker. Make the MacBooks the super thin iPad wannabes. Make the MacBook Pros what they're supposed to be, which is a superior laptop that stands out and compete with other similarly priced laptops. They're so far out of date compared to every single laptop out there it's silly.

I actually think that an eGPU in the form of a TB3 display isn't that far fetched. If Apple genuinely thinks iGPUs are good enough then a long overdue update to the TB display with 5k P3 and eGPU sounds plausible... It makes the rMBP marketable as the thinnest and lightest consumer laptop while giving the pro market a long overdue update to the displays as well as the option for an eGPU. It might even allow the liberty to use a desktop class GPU assuming they don't make the new display freakishly thin.

Um, you guys clearly haven't been on a Windows computer in a long time. Windows Media Player?? Ever tried to use that piece of garbage. iTunes is bad but not that bad.

Agree that iTunes is horrible. I think it is caused by the Steve Job's behavior to software and hardware specifics. According to the Wozniak's words, Steve had no clue how it works and didn't want to learn for a long time for some details and etc. Later we can see products like "iWorks" which are simple as book for kids but not as powerful and deep as Microsoft's Office or OpenOffice for example. iTunes as player as well as Windows Media player are okay. But iTunes as a tool for syncing and managing is horrible. Probably it is also partly caused by the apple's user limitation politics.

Seems like Siri here as a standalone macOS app. Which is not integrated in OS. But that is just a first blind opinion. ANyway icons says that for me. Microsoft did their thing a year ago. Apple is catching up again...

I won't be surprised if they upgrade cMBP or will keep sales and will keep the price on a similar level after 4 years after WWDC.

Some of you guys made Serban to stop posting... don't whine then please. He has/had a lot of information for you.

I just took a look... wtf is up with those SSD prices

View attachment 631971

*Takes a quick look at Newegg...

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB: $85

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 512GB: $208

And its not like these Samsung SSDs are the cheap ones either.

I love Apple's hardware and I love their software, but this kind of stuff I don't really like.^^^^
I understand that they're a business but overcharging this much for a component that should already be included in the system just seems like they're preying on people who don't know better.

They are preying on people that don't know any better, and that's not cool. I remember one time a year ago or so (perhaps it was longer) when I was talking to a specialist at the Apple Store, and she was telling me that all of the employees actively steered people away from the cMBP because they all thought it was a bad deal and extremely outdated. So, that's good at the very least. If Apple won't look out for their consumers anymore, at least people walking into that store had someone to steer them in the right direction.
[doublepost=1463646111][/doublepost]I hope that I'm not the only person here who doesn't care about Siri at all. I just don't find these personal digital assistants like her and Cortana useful. So, if Siri really is the headline feature of 10.12 and one of the only new things, I'll be really disappointed.

In case I can use Siri simultaneous to my normal work, I would really like that feature. But if Siri would interrupt my workflow, like in iOS, I wouldn't use it I guess.

If Apple isnt going to release a MBP 13" with TB3, affordable 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM, I am 100% switching to Dell XPS 13" as working machine, and give my MBA 11" 2011 my partner.

Totally agree with you Siri needs to be more immersive and less obstructive. Google Assistant announced at their I/o seems like the steps in the right direction.

Even if Siri and her ilk were more useful, I don't think I'd use them anymore that I currently do. When it comes down to it, I just don't want to talk to my devices. It just seems so weird and I can't get over it. I know that people on tech sites like this really like these types of technologies, but I'm wondering how much normal people use them? I honestly can't remember ever seeing anyone I know ever interacting with an assistant before. It just seems so gimmicky to me, and it always has. I vastly prefer just using my fingers and the touch screen.

i sometimes ask siri to check the weather for me, because the weather app is too far away.
I don't do reminders/calendar, but if I did I guess i'd use siri more.

Calling all audio/recording guys!

Hey guys/gals...long time lurker here, been following this thread for quite some time. I'm really on the fence about the upcoming rMBP. My main task for my next laptop will be audio recording at home. It's not heavy studio stuff...I'm basically recording demos for my band before rehearsal, but it's not just recording the riffs; I want the demos to give a real good first taste of a song so I lay it all down; drums through EZ-drummer, guitars and bass with Amplitube and my DAW being Cubase since I'm on an old Win laptop. I line my stuff through a Behringer external sound card.

I'm partly "invested" in the Apple ecosystem I guess...being on a iPhone 6 and my family's main browser/kids stuff is the iPad.

Now, my Win laptop is 5 years old and I need to upgrade, I need a laptop and not a stationary machine so I can work on songs from anywhere. My first thought was the upcoming rMBP but I'm just not that sure anymore...I love the design and OS and all of Apples products but I'm having a hard time justifying just that for a purchase when I on the other hand can get an XPS or similar powered Win laptop cheaper with Reaper as my main DAW instead. The other route would be the upcoming rMBP with Logic or Reaper. I have not had any problems with Win 10 so far.

Is there any audio guys out there that can share something; thoughts/input about choosing the new MBP with the Logic or Reaper DAW route over the Win with Reaper DAW route and why you have come to your decision?

Any input appreciated! Cheers guys,

(located in the EU/Sweden if you have thoughts on Apple/PC prices etc)

For most of my daily tasks I agree with you. But some simply things I really use Siri for:
Asking about the population of a town/state/country.
Stock exchange
Soccer scores
"Does it rain tomorrow? How warm is it right now?"
Reminders/Dates
Sometimes for quick-answering an message to my Mom or girlfriend ("on my way. 5 minutes" , "im back home")

But I guess I see your point. Would I really talk to my Macbook like I talk to my iPhone ? If I think about it .... this could get weird. Would it still be easier to talk to Siri on MBP than just use the keyboard/trackpad?
On the iPhone it is a speed-bump for me. Would it be on the MBP? Lets see ;-)

I think the uneasiness with talking to our devices comes from the fact that it's still foreign for us, as humans, to talk to an inanimate object. Partly the sheer psychological oddity of that and partly because of the odd looks we get in society. But I think overtime as more and more jobs seem to become autonomous in the form of remote working and a bit of freelancing, I think these assistants could prove to be useful in managing petty daily tasks. (I've been working with bunch of startups and given that most of them are happy with remote working I personally find Siri useful for reminders and scheduling and the occasional google searches) I wish Siri could interact with other apps and services as well as it would make it more immersive in the everyday workflow, also it would have to not distract from the current task, so something like 'background Siri' if that makes sense, where you call for Siri through the usual 'hey Siri' but only get audio acknowledgement would be nice.

At the current level of sophistication, Siri's nowhere close to being a reliable and consistent assistant.

Even if the speech recognition and interpretation technology were to be perfected, I can't imagine it being any more useful than what Spotlight offers currently. Natural language is just not a very efficient computer interface.

You can always run your mac on Windows 10 as well. Check also Studio One 3.2 daw. Reaper is fine too.
Mac has better audio engine inside so you won't need Asio4all drivers. If you like XPS then buy it :) or wait with us to compare.
16 GB of RAM and 4 core CPU will handle stuff. Performance wise you can consider rMBP15 from mid 2015 or mid 2014, pay attention thought they are not future proof.

Agreed but with viv and Google Assistant making progress in the right direction the improvements are becoming real. I just want the experience to be immersive and coherent across platforms and devices and adding Siri to Mac would be the first step for that.

Yeah, I see what you are saying and I do use Siri every once in awhile, but it's hardly a necessary feature for me. If she bit the dust I don't think I'd care very much. On the iPhone you also have the added feature of hands free with Hey Siri, which can be useful if you are in the car, I guess. But with the Mac it is going to have less use cases.

I will start talking to my computer when we have personal assistants like Jarvis from IronMan. In other words real AI.

Yes! I want some real insight from Siri. Until she can diagnose my illnesses, offer my advice on how to properly del with my horrid mother, and teach me how to cook like Gordon Ramsey, I'm not buying into it!

Just from Siri having a dedicated icon in the Dock you cannot conclude it's not integrated in the OS. Several OS services appear as dedicated Dock icon and/or appear in the Applications folder, despite being fully integrated, for instance Mission Control or Time Machine.

Thanks for the input, I will definitely wait for the new MBP before deciding. Yeah, I'm having a hard time choosing Logic over Reaper nowadays...I know of "real" recording guys who have gone over to Reaper from ProTools or Logic.
