You play WoW on a Macbook? That is seriously interesting to me; I have a ten year old Mac Pro and a six year old MBA and intend to replace them both with a single laptop that will last for a good few years and amongst other things play that game with a reasonable level of performance. I had assumed that I would need a dGPU (blizzard suggest that even the M370X is not quite at the standard for the next expansion) so I'm fidgeting around waiting to see if they put a Polaris chip in the new MBP but maybe I don't need that?

Would love to hear your thoughts, what do you think would be OK for your next computer, I'm guessing something with the Iris Pro 580?

Don't get me wrong, it sucks playing on "low"! But since you're hunched over a 12" screen, it's not too bad, really. In 2012, my guild and I took down cho'gall in BoT ... And I was on travel for work on an 11" MacBook Air in a hotel room.

Yeah, the 580 should allow medium or better settings and a nice view distance. That would work well. I would prefer a dGPU, I think, but since I have to play in the living room (i.e. on battery power) a lot, I might give up high graphics settings for more battery power. ~50w TDP for a graphics processor is a big hit on battery life. Even on the 12" rMB, playing wow cut the battery life by almost 50%, just from running the processor and iGPU at full bore. (~7-8 hrs cut down to ~4)

So...it's a real compromise, for sure. The 580 might not be too bad, but the rMBP is a bit expensive for medium performance on WoW. Too bad that Alienware comes with Windows! And piss-poor battery life. And it's kinda ugly. And has a crappy trackpad. And it's super thick, and made out of black plastic. And it comes with Windows. And weighs so much. And...oh well, my son is about to destroy the house, better stop complaining and go pay attention to him!

Cheers

That's some amazingly circular logic you've got there.

Premise 1: Heat pipes mean MBP doesn't need fans.
Premise 2: A fanless MBP must have a 15W processor.
Conclusion: MBP with heat pipe will be 15W processor.

But premise 2 is based on the assumption that the MBP uses the same heat dissipation technology as the rMB, which doesn't use heat pipes. Without a heat pipe you are restricted to 15W, but because heat pipes work better than fans you could theoretically have a fanless MBP with a 45W processor.

Do you see why your argument is invalid? It doesn't matter what technology Apple uses for heat dissipation as long as they adequately cool the components, so heat pipes are just as likely with any TDP as long as they can get the technology to work.

Also, magnesium may dissipate heat better than aluminum, but it can't conduct heat as well and that's the value we should be concerned with. Plus, aluminum is far sturdier.
Fanless would be a 4.5w processor. I have not heard of any 15w processor without a fan...

How long have you guys had yours? My rMBP I got in late 2012 and it worked fine until March of this year. Before then the worst problems were worn-down letters on the keys and the display had some scratches. But then all of a sudden, the CPU started throttling randomly for no reason and I was unable to solve the issue no matter the 100 different fixes I tried. So I sold it as broken on eBay. But the trackpad and keyboard worked fine and it never crashed. It was basically perfect until that day in March when the logic board fried in some way (assuming). I guess everyone's craps out in a different way lol

3 1/2 years for a rMBP is just horrible? Shouldn't these Macbook Pros last a lot longer than that since we paid so much for them?

Everyone talking about needing to replace their 2011 or newer MacBook Pro while I'm here with a Late 08 with 30 minutes of battery life. Really want a new MacBook, but be crappy if they release new ones, then jump to Kaby Lake 4 months later. I guess anything is better than a core 2 duo though

They should and they typically do. My 09 MBP 13" is about to turn 7 years old and I still use it every day. I even use Lightroom to edit RAW files and it's decent (as long as I am patient and have a cup of coffee to keep me company).

I feel your pain. Crap battery and tons of lag. As of recent safari keeps quitting. Such a pain.

new prices, but this year we will have some nice ios+macos systems. i hope with little bugs
From what i saw i really feel Apple needed some time like 2015-2016 to come with some nice products with os for what makes Apple a premium brand and its own way.
And next year or years, i hope in max 2 years because i really want one to own, a new current prototype to became a real thing
Can you tell me anything about this prototype?! (If not public then via PM) :D

One of the most useful summaries of playing WoW on a Macbook I've read, thanks! I'll probably suck up whatever they offer with the new MBP and give it a go now I know that even an iGPU will do it, knowing that even last years model with the AMD graphics would also let me give the game a go again.

I have looked at Windows laptops, including Dell ones, but you are right. Longevity, quality trackpad, battery life; I'm a sucker for Apple products.

Thanks again

I just watched the 13 and 15 inch retina announcements, they started shipping at the day of announcement. Hoping this will happen this year as well.
It was also quite funny to see Apple charge 1699 for a 13" with 128 GB and 8 GB. Hope they don't do that this time lol, cause that would be way overpriced.

Probably keep the pricing and bump the specs..?

even the 12"MB starts at 8/256, the pro will be at least on par with that.
personally, i wouldn't go lower than 16/512 whatever my next laptop will be.

if you think that 4 years later the base model is still 8/128.. that's kind of depressing.

upgrades are smaller than they used to be 5-10 years ago, at least this should mean PCs last longer!

I know what you mean I have late 08 myself and lost my mind when they had a major upgrade in early 09, even called Apple stupid waste of time on my part but did it anyway. Refused to upgrade last June due to upgrade coming soon. Now I see another meltdown is possible in my future since I can't wait forever to replace this MBP. What would really get me is if they added touch with a pen since I do a lot of photoshop

Is there even a thing left to be discussed about the MacBook Pro?

Seems like we covered everything and we're starting to repeat ourselves.

This wait is making us delusional

Just hopin' apple pull something out the bag to keep us here...
