i know from somebody who i don't know personally but who should know based on the credentials provided that apple has had skylake chips available for 3 weeks now. skylake mbp's are supposedly ready to ship. the only problem with the 15" model is that intel has not released proper iris pro-featured chips yet. the source says intel will do so in january while apple will get the chips ahead of time (~2 weeks). generally, intel as a partner seems to be a pita for apple.

January ???? I don't want to wait that long.

Intel does seem like a PITA partner for Apple, but certainly not as bad as the PowerPC days.

Can you please cite your source? I really want to believe you, but first I need to know who exactly has the guts to go up against every other rumor out there.

FYI on Apple.com when the store re-opened the MacBook pro & Air dropped in price.

Not sure if it is relevant to an impending update but it JUST happened.

The Apple Store App still has yesterdays prices.

Airs dropped $50 and Pros dropped from $100-$200

So, a March release is realistic now? Because i don't think apple will give in January a Keynote.

That is way too many changes for one release, considering new platform (skylake) and new chasis design. 5K display on MBP? You think they gonna double the PPI of the MBP display and say goodbye to battery life? And if I'm not mistaken, the new Iris Pro will be able to drive only a single 5K display. So either you would have to opt for an dedicated GPU with your hypothetical 5K MBP or deal with the limitations with regards to multi-displays set up. Why would Apple do that given the cost and inconvenience, relative to the benefit. The current retina display on MBP is perfectly fine. The iPad Pro's display is only marginally better; I'm not even sure that people will notice a difference between it and the rMBP's. 5K MBP makes no sense to me . So I can guarantee you it won't happen with the next version. Your "guarantee" is really just speculations listing a bunch of new tech. Most of the stuff will turn out to be inaccurate, besides the safe predictions like better battery and increased graphics performance.

I said we might even get 5K. I didn't say we will. All I'm saying is it's going to be better than the iPad pro display. You quoted me so read what you quote, "Incredibly high pixel display".

I agree that 5K is a long shot but with 4K content becoming more available it's not that far out of the realm of possibilities.

What did they do with the PPI when they went retina?

You say the current retina display on MBP is perfectly fine, and I would agree. However there's no way they're not updating the display. They're not going to just let it be. The fact that Phil Schiller said the iPad Pro display is better than a 15" MBP display pretty much wrote off the current MBP display. It's done. It's not good enough any more. Even if it technically is and nobody would notice the difference.

As for the guarantee I made.

First of all I only guaranteed (and still do) that the MacBook Pro will be redesigned. I'm not at all saying that the spec list I mentioned is how it will redesigned because I do not know that whatsoever. So there's no need to be so salty about that.

I just know that it will be redesigned. Again, I'm not at all saying that the specs I mentioned will appear in the redesign. I just mentioned that as possibilities.

However I would bet the farm that it will be redesigned.

Don't put words in my mouth just because you lack reading comprehension. It looks especially stupid when you quote me and then go on the rephrase what I said while the text you're quoting doesn't say at all what your rephrasing.

5k may be too much (Maybe 4k? 16:10 though), and I'm not sure about intel's proprietary wireless tech, but I think most of the rest is right.

Wireless charging to me is a long shot. Even in 2016. But according to available tech now it -is- possible. And it's also definitely not out of the ordinary for Apple to push the envelope.

Who knows.

Interesting. January is CES time. It seems odd to me but it makes the March time line look more likely.

Prices look the same to me on the MacBook Pro page.

Would it still be a stretch if they went 16"? (not saying at all that they will but there has been a lot of speculation that there will be a 12", 14", 16" line up)

They're gonna continue to run those obsolete CPUs for another 6 months??

According to the MacRumors Buyer's guide we're about mid-cycle so it wouldn't be that strange. Even more shocking is that it's possible for them to delay it until the exact release dates of the current-gen.

They put a 2013 processor in a 2015 notebook. These guys are nuts.

They show $100 less for me... $1,199 .. Apple Store App shows $1,299

Apple store prices below

Weird... This is what I see:

I just added it to the cart and it added the $200 for the beats back to school.. then removed it ...

So it actually is coming up $1,199 for me.

odd for sure.. but Ill take the $

Definitely strange but I couldn't care less seeing as no 2015 MacBook is worth buying. (unless your current machine broke down)

Curious what you think would be the best machine than to run Final Cut Pro & doing 4K video edit? Laptop is optimal but if I was really getting a better deal with a desk top and some future proof cushion I could go that route.

While I have no experience editing 4K video let alone basic video editing. I know that to do video editing you work with a lot of big files. That's especially the case with 4K video.

If you're already of the mindset that a laptop would be optimal I would advise you to go for the current 15" MBP. Out of all the current hardware available (whether MacBook or iMac). The 15" has the fastest SSD drives and a strong processor. This will help significantly during video editing sessions.

The only comparative alternative would be the 5K riMac with SSD storage which would put you around the same price as the MBP without the portability (but the SSD would be slower than the one in the MBP).

Of course advice would depend on your current setup. Do you already have a separate monitor? Does portability matter to you? etc.

You might somehow be within the education Apple store and that's why you're seeing those prices. If you continue with checkout, you should get to a point where you have to check off that you are indeed part of an education institution.
