Question is, does Apple stand to gain anything from providing a dGPU option financially if such a small minority of users benefit from it. So no, I don't have any problem with them providing the option even though I don't need it, but I guess it is more to do with, we don't think they will provide the option - but we are obviously prone to being wrong.
The problem with calling it a small minority is that we haven't (to my knowledge) seen any numbers of how the 15" with dGPU are selling compared to the other 15" MBP.
If Apple want to continue to appeal to the users which need portability and the extra power the decision to cut dGPU will be problematic since those users is not as locked in software wise as they used to be.
As we have seen aparture being abandoned, iWork as lacking behind and no real innovating in final cut or logic, the only thing keeping the users which need the power to start using Windows or Linux.

Seems a bit pointless to have a GPU over USB-C. You have to shunt the data in and out of memory which an integrated GPU doesn't have to do. And where would the power come from? If you need a power source, you might as well save yourself lots of $$$ and buy a dedicated 2U GPU box.

NO?! Did you just make that up in your mind as you wrote it? eGPU uses PCI-e lanes and is connected directly to the CPU like every other graphics card you stupid kid. GPU over USB-C is just bad english for a 2U GPU box, and the power comes from the wall.

Jesus Christ... Could all of you who do not want a MBP with dGPU just NOT buy the top end 15" inch and upgrade the other???
There are actually some of us who need/want a dGPU and are willing to take the "risk" that comes with it.

It is a puzzle to me that you are arguing/wishing for Apple not to include it due to your own needs.
To my knowledge those problems with the models having a dGPU has had no spillover effect on the models which don't.

I'm actually in favor of a dGPU, but I'm afraid a proper answer might get lost in the shuffle so I'm going to explain the reasoning behind being against dGPUs.

When you design an MBP to have the option of a dGPU, there are compromises made to the overall design. In particular, size and thermal models in the non-dGPU model would be designed as though the dGPU were included. In other words: less heat dissipation capacity for the CPU in general and a hole where the dGPU is missing.

Those who want no dGPU option believe the MBP as a whole would be better designed if the option is removed completely.

it'd still be heck of a lot better solution than an overheating, failing, throttling, mediocre dGPU.

Bah.
Even though you are an iGPU individual, I was applauding you all the way until you had to close out with that.
What's the need for these insults? It ruins the argument you try to make.

So Intel says Kaby Lake will definitely be shipping in PCs by the end of the year. The new MBP is coming 4th quarter - is it possible we'll be skipping Skylake entirely?

They may gain financially by offering a dGPU model even if not many people actually buy it, since it will act as a price anchor and influence people to buy a more expensive model than they would otherwise.

I know I'm just a newbie, but I get tired of reading pointless comments in this thread.

  • NO THERE WILL NOT BE ANY MACBOOK PRO WITH KABY LAKE THIS YEAR! I don't care what article you found, and I don't care what the article says, it wont happen!
  • #2 I don't care about any zenbooks or xps, if i did I would be in the "waiting for zenbook" thread on asusrumors.com, AND I'M NOT!
  • #3 Stop arguing about dGPUs. Apple have allways made their PRO models for PRO users, and the Iris Pro in FinalCut will still make shorter renders than Adobe on any windows machine. If Apple wants to leave dGPU, there is still no point leaving Apple if you claim you're a "PRO" user.
TLDR; Shut up, and Apple will do what Apple wants!

For the trackpad they replace it then it goes bad, I don't know why. They tried to explain to me that for my exact model that the battery when it goes hot it causes the trackpad to raise a little bit and therefore it messes up. But in my case it happens even when the battery is cool. Also the first one in 2010 I had the hard drive and motherboard were really bad even after replacing them both few times. Then my 2011 I can't remember exactly. But now the 2013 is really bad with the trackpad and I am waiting for the 2016 rMBP to come out so I can have it replaced through applecare. I won't take no for an answer.

I always buy my applecare off of ebay for about $129-189
THANK YOU. I totally forgot about this option. (Been a while since I bought a new Mac.)

The Kaby Lake Chips releasing in 2016 will not be suitable for a Macbook Pro. Intel does not just release every variant of a processor family all at once. Skylake chips started coming out last year, but suitable chips for Macbook Pro have only been available for a few weeks. It is extremely likely that the same will happen with Kaby Lake.

I think you summarise the argument pretty well. If iGPU is the only option then I can't buy a Mac laptop as my only computer so I will shop elsewhere. There must be other people in that boat so Apple would have to run the numbers and come to a decision on what is best for sales in the long run. iGPU is one of the areas making large improvements relatively quickly, but I think it's too early to have that as the only option on their top machines.

On a related note, I believe the Razer Core eGPU box is $399 in the US, before you buy an actual card. I would love to see what Apple would try to charge for one.

To all of those saying October is too late and all, the late 08 MBP redesign was released in October. I remember reading all of the tumors and waiting and waiting for that to be announced. And I believe they updated them 5 months later. Anything is possible.
Yes, but they also released a MacBook Pro in February of 2008, proving my point 500 days is a long time.

Hello guys!
I'm kinda new of this forum, and I've joined this amazing thread just recently!
I have just a couple of question for you guys:
- Do you know when will be announced this rumored new MacBook Pro?
- I've heard that Kaby Lake CPU are coming, so maybe Apple will skip Skylake and put Kaby Lake in the next MBP?

Thank you everyone for the answers!

edit: I forgot another question: I'm a huge fan of games. Do you think the next MBP will have a dGPU?
If so, which one?

Still, no one is providing a clear source as to why that's the case.

WHY? Don't you even read the last page before asking? Thats just rude and lack of respect for other people spending time and sharing their knowledge.
