I am curious to know what others here think will happen to TB1 and TB2 devices, docks, drives etc. Will they suddenly become very cheap as it has effectively been abandoned? It might be good for bargain hunters. Or will they keep on being used?

I have a TB2 dock and it has been great but unsure what I will end up doing when I move to TB3.
tb3 is going to be backward compatible, so you'll only need new cables or adapters i suppose.
my bad, wrong statement

I agree. I still think it's possible though that it will be available via USB-C -let's see what Apple has come up with. Perhaps the "break point" will be in the connector at the end of the cable etc?

i think that usb-c -as a standard- could not implement things like magnetic plugs. and anyway, since in the cable you'r going to have power+data a mechanical interruption feature would be a big mess for example when you are going to use that port for data transfer instead of power...

I certainly didn't "freak out". I am happy about it and applaud it as a brave decision.

It will however cause inconvenience. It isn't comparable to DVDs or even floppy disks. Virtually all peripherals being sold in 2016, things that will be used for a good few years, use USB-A. It will take time.

The cost issue is, as you point out, neither here nor there. It is the convenience factor though. If you are planning to interact with others, work in a team or deal directly with customers then you will, almost 100% of the time, have to carry an adapter just in case. You'll get some very funny looks when having to explain to a customer that their USB-A device and cable (99.999% of devices widely in use as of 2016 and it will be 90%+ of devices sold in 2017 at least) can't be plugged in because you left your adapter at home. That is an unusual thing really and will be inconvenient. That's the nature of design decisions though; not always simple or easy and no perfect answer.

I do think though that it perhaps needs such a bold move from Apple as otherwise USB-C just wasn't going to catch on in the mass market as it has a rapidly shrinking window of opportunity before everything becomes wireless. Hopefully some other manufacturers go all in too. It might be thanks to Apple that USB-C truly catches fire. If only they could use it instead of lightning.

I didn't mean to insinuate that you were freaking out. I meant that people in general were freaking out. Sorry for the confusion. And if Apple is trying to encourage the proliferation of USB-C, they should be adopting it more readily, shouldn't they? As of right now the only Mac that has is it and can be purchased is the MacBook. Hopefully USB-C does catch fire though, otherwise those shiny new 2016 MBP's are going to have almost no peripherals available that won't require an adapter.

I don't think they will become very cheap. Manufacturers may offer a slight discount (ie akitio is offloading tb2 kit for a small discount) but the amount of tb1/2 kit always was more expensive so they want to recoup the outlay. The market for those devices is still out there just will be rapidly shrinking.
The biggest barrier is that the adapter for tb3 to tb2 is around $100 dollars. Someone who has invested in multiple tb2 kit will pay that but few people will buy tb2 kit with the intention on buying the adapter to use it. Tb3 kit is coming out so rapidly it doesn't make any sense unless you know for sure that a vendor is not updating their product to tb3.

No worries, thought you meant I was freaking out. I am excited anyway!

And yes, that is the big risk with going all in for USB-C. But if nobody goes all in then we will never get economies of scale going and it will end up like TB1 and 2, i.e. niche devices. USB-C and TB3 should finally marry the best performance with the widest compatibility. It is up against the fact that most people don't like spending even a few dollars on a cable. Note that the 2016 flagship Samsung phone has stuck with micro-USB. So USB-C has a fight to get going but I hope it does.

damn, really, i've always taught they were just backward compatible without any issue or other things needed.
such a shame for those people who paid big money for super expensive thunderbolt arrays of drives and so on.

I agree. I also think that Apple should go all in with USB-C on iOS devices too, especially if they are going to ditch the 3.5mm jack. By using an open standard like that, it will also promote the creation of headphones that can potentially work with all devices going forward (Android phones, Windows PC's, etc.) No one is going to want to buy expensive headphones that will only connect to Apple devices via a proprietary port like Lightning.

Also, it would be nice for Apple to standardize on a single port for everything they offer...no matter what it is.

i'm trying to study as best as possibile those leaks.
first thing other than the big things, the space for the hinge, we may suppose that this chassis has been designed with the macbook's hinge in mind.
second thing, i've tried to scale the first picture to an actual size, usia the keyboard keys holes as reference, obviously it can't be really accurate since the pic is little grainy, but in the end it seems to be smaller, especially in the wide dimension, almost 1,5 cm less, so goodbye display frame?

The retina MacBook's keys are quite a bit bigger (17%) than the current rMBP's keys, so the difference may be because of that. I doubt it would be much, if at all, smaller width-ways, especially with the speaker grilles. I think the bezels are here to stay.

No USB 3, NO SD, NO MAGSAFE! only this USB C Bull **** that no one uses!!! I dont live in the future!!! Im buying the current rMB RIGHT... NOW!

Well I'm sad for no SD and not even one USB-A. But it was expectable. Hope to see an adapter with USB-A, HDMI and SD card reader.

What I'm sad about tho is the lack of MagSafe... Is it really that thick that it couldn't be included? :(

For the little I know of user interface, those arrows don't make sense at all.
Why are the lateral bigger than the vertical?!
They are part of the same function group, they should have same shape and same dimension!
That's really confusing.
It drive me crazy.
o_O

edit: any thought about the speakers?
Those leaked photos seems like the 13", but it has anyway the speakers well-defined on the sides.

I have a question for the community, is it worth it to replace my mid 2012 rMBP this year if it has all the rumored features? I can already see mine beginning to slow down a bit and I could use a storage upgrade from my current 256 GB. My mac currently has 16 GB of RAM, a GT 650M and the 2.3 Ghz i7 from 2012 (the base processor). Is it really going to be a substantial upgrade for me?

I hope that this new rMBP is like the rMB but with the 4 ports depicted and significantly better performance :D I don't care about needing adaptors since they're pretty lightweight and I already need adaptors for my current rMB. The lack of MagSafe is a bit of a bummer but maybe it's still included (invisible port or wireless charging?)

Edit:
Notice the large space in the photo where the magsafe used to be? It seems odd that the ports on one side go almost up to the hinge whereas the other side doesn't. I recon there is an invisible MagSafe...

It could be, just like older Xperia phones.
OR
the leaker is the person that drill holes in the chassis, but not all the holes, only usb-c holes. And that's why sd slot, hdmi and MagSafe are still missing

Pretty sure that's just so the USB ports are symmetrical on each side.

Exactly. The space for the MagSafe is there.

Or it could be a magnetic wireless charger like the apple watch uses.

I reckon that leaked chassis it fake. It doesn't fit with the KGI report which said the new rMBP would be significantly thinner than the current model (think Digitimes also reported this earlier in the year) and take design cues from the 12" Macbook. From those pictures it looks almost identical to the current model in size and shape.

It's hard to tell without the bottom case present, but the top case looks to be about as thick as the thickest part of the rMB, which isn't exactly a fatty. How thin do you think they can make it with any ports at all?

I'm guessing because the right side has a headphone port (which is ironic as they're getting ready of the headphone port on the iPhone, but still deem it 'worthy' enough to keep on laptops?) they wanted to keep the left ports aligned similarly. Which is a plus in my book as I don't like the way they're not aligned on the current rMBP. I've had my laptop for four years and still inevitably plug in a USB cable into the HDMI port.

Or a set of dots for a iPad Pro style smart connector pocketless MagSafe.

The one other thing about that port is that it's also an optical port, so perhaps worth keeping? Honestly I've never used an optical cable with my MBPs, dunno if others do — figure most people trying to get pro audio out of their machines are using another port.
