If WWDC doesn't show anything (as expected) I think I'll get a 15" MBP with the educational discount. Anyone know when the UK back to school promotion kicks in? I see the US one now offers beats headphones.

Last year the UK promotion launched on 7th August, though the US promotion launched a lot later last year, in late July, so we may get it in the UK sometime in July.

Though of course the discount is year-round, so despite needing a MBP for university in September I'm going to wait for the eventual update... though I would really like some free wireless Beats headphones.

Has no one considered that the esc key could just take the place of the §-key to the left of 1?

Unfortunately, that key is quite frequently used by developers.
(~ being home dir in terminal and ` for wrapping expressions in bash scripts, etc.)

While it will make some people slightly happier, some others won't be..

I'm pretty sure the chassis picture and OLED strip rumors are about as good as you could hope for. Add Mark Gurman's no hardware at WWDC and Ming Chi Kuo's Q4 talk and I'd say we have about as many rumors as ever before.

No I mean like what will happen in WWDC.

After thinking hard about it for a few weeks, I finally came up with a real use for the OLED bar!

I know, I use a 60% keyboard for development. I use shift+esc and shift+fn+esc.
And so could you :)

Are you talking about the same key? The key to the left of the 1 on my keyboard is §, or ± when pressed with Shift.

The ` and ~ key is to the right of the left-hand Shift key, above Control and Option.

EDIT: Strange, just looked it up. The § key doesn't seem to exist on US layouts. In any case, Apple could replace what on American keyboards is the `/~ key with Escape, and just use a shortened Shift key on the left like European layouts and move the `/~ to there.

As someone who has been typing on a US keyboard layout for about 30 years, this would infuriate me to no end. I'm sure I'm not alone, and anyone in Canada who's tried to type on a French-Canadian layout keyboard after using a US style for so long already knows this pain.

Not sure about that. The very first MBA also had very limited ports, and Apple improved it in the next refresh by putting in more ports.

That was then this is now. "Because this is the vision of the future of the notebook, one of extreme portability... Now of course there is a time when it's really convenient to plug in a cable. That's when you want to charge quickly. So we do have a port on here for power, and the team decided if we are going to have a port on it, let's make the most versatile connector we have ever put in a notebook." -Phil Schiller upon revealing the rMB.

An additional port on their ultra portable, wireless-embracing laptop would be a step away from the above mindset. The MBP is where we'll see the ports. The MB just isn't for those with tons of peripherals, but for those that do there's the adapters.

Would it really be that hard to adjust? (Genuine question, I don't use the `/~ enough to ever really be bothered by it moving.) I've had a look, and the French-Canadian keyboard is pretty different. We're only talking about two keys here really.

On the german/austrian keyboard there is a ^° key left to the 1, the § is above the 3.

I would be fine with replacing that ^° key by ESC because I need ^ only for frensh words and ° only for degrees like °C, but I very rarely write frensh words and often just use the word "Grad" instead of the ° sign.

Despite that they should keep the whole line because the F-keys especially for display/keyboard-brightness and volume are used very often and I can't imagine to use a touch panel for that. Why not just put that OLED thing above the whole keyboard and don't make the trackpad so much larger?

But who knows. It could be just one of many prototypes that we'll never see.

P.S.: And please a real full size keyboard with numeric pad etc. for the 17-inch instead of the speakers left and right to the keyboard. ;)

Edit: That ~ is completely missing on my keyboard. At least it is not a visible key.

Maybe we'll see them split the 'esc' key like the up and down arrow keys, with 'esc' on top and '`/~' on the bottom. Sure, it may make for some accidental presses at first, but I'm sure users could adjust.

To be honest, yes. I can't watch the xbox briefing because of it. But I really want to learn more about the new Swift and possible rMBP so I have to skip xbox and watch the video later on.

And they're supposed to unveil the "Project Scorpio" thing too... this sucks.

Yup, that really sucks. I will be watching E3 with some friends. I guess I sneak my iPad in, to watch WWDC.

You cannot get rid of the `~ key. No way, no how. Its one of the most important keys to developers. Right shift is useless, get rid of that instead.

±§ key is responsible for <> in RU layout. I can see a bunch of 1C programmers being upset. For most other languages EN layout is used anyway, and that key has been so wonderfully useless, that I've been using it as my text expansion trigger for years, so I'll miss it dearly if it's suddenly gone :(

For those who are waiting with 2012-2013 rMBP 15 with dgpu, would it be a smart idea to get one of those on eBay on the cheap and try take advantage of the extended repair programme offered by Apple? I know 2015 rMBP would suit my needs perfectly but I just can't bring my self to pay full price on what I consider to be 2 year old hardware. Even with the student discount it's still a hefty price in the uk. So I'm wondering if the 2013 rMBP -> repair programme, is a sensible option.

It's not the ~ key that is so tough to adjust to, it's the shorter shift key. That's the main problem with the French-Canadian keyboard as well, despite all the other differences. I have had to use it on and off at work for the past 5 years and still make mistakes all the time due to the short shift key.
