Kaby Lake won't be as big progress as Skylake, KabyLake shouldn't be even in lineup, they put it there cause they can't create 10nm fast enough. KabyLake is just a fill to give more time for the 10nm process.

I can see it being something like Skylake is for desktop computers, a very small boost, if youre buying new laptop in 2017 or something obviously youll go with it, but there will be almost nothing in it for users to switch from Skylakes.

"This is better than a "Skylake Refresh"
By introducing a new graphics architecture with Kaby Lake, Intel should be able to not only improve performance in 3D graphics over Skylake, but to deliver more robust features in applications such as video playback.

For example, in a recent slide at its 2014 developer conference discussing the challenges of 4K content, the company indicated that some content will require that the hardware can decode 10-bit HEVC content. In the same slide, Intel indicated Skylake would only be able to decode 8-bit HEVC content but that its 2016 platform would bring full HEVC/10-bit decode .

Bringing new architectural features to Kaby Lake, even via an older manufacturing technology, should still yield some tangible benefits over the older-generation Skylake architecture."

""Netflix has opted to go with HEVC Main10 for its 4K streams," he writes. "When Netflix finally enables 4K streaming on PCs, Skylake, unfortunately is not going to be as power efficient a platform as it could have been.""

You're reference is an article from June.
We still have no information about Kaby Lake, we have no idea when it is supposed to arrive in the market (2016 could mean almost anytime), as we have no precise idea when Skylake will arrive on the market.
I can understand the need of having the newest technology, but at this point it doesn't make sense.
If and when a MBP Kaby Lake will come out, there will be surely some articles about how great and innovative Cannonlake is going to be.

To sum up: if you want a MBP with Skylake, wait for next week/november or at least March.
If don't, please open a new thread called "waiting for Kaby Lake MBP"

What mean this?
If I buy a Skylake MBP this can't play Netflix in 4K/UHD? My f*cking Smart TV can do this...

Yes I'm referencing an article that's only 4 months old. Shocker. Clearly we do have information on Kaby Lake as I just posted news on it.

I asked a very simple question and people threw a hissy fit because they had to proceed to justify their future purchases. Don't even know why I wasted my time asking here, clearly I know more about the topic than the majority of users that have replied to me. This thread was borderline dead with meaningful discussion before I entered it.

The only information about Kaby Lake is an "user on the AnandTech forums who claims to have done some digging".
Except for that, we all no information about Kaby Lake. I've seen a leaked slide about it, but that's it.
We don't have technical specs, no declaration from Intel, almost nothing.

I can answer to your question: maybe Kaby Lake will be an improvement, maybe don't. We don't do.
We don't have enough data to verify.
Once again: if you want a MBP with Skylake, wait for next week/november or at least March.
If don't, please open a new thread called "waiting for Kaby Lake MBP"

Feel like you're wasting your time here?
Feel free to go out!

I'm getting to the point that I'd be fine with just having this exact same form and ports with the exception of Thunderbolt 2 ports replaced by USB type-C (Thunderbolt 3 and 10Gbps USB 3.1).

Why the wait until next year? The xps 15 has a quad core skylake processor in it. I thought they weren't coming out till next year?

According to my understanding, Skylakes with intel HD Graphics are available since September. Apple use processors embedding Intel Iris (Pro) Graphics, considered as the high-performance versions of HD Graphics, and those CPUs are yet to be released.

hi guys!

first of all: thank you so much for giving me input and energy to keep up my anticipation regarding new rMBPs!

so...going through a list from Intel containing all current Skylake CPUs (http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/37572/Skylake) you can check on their status to find out whether or not they are available to corporates, oems and such.

and looking at the potential and suitable CPU for the upcoming rMBP 13" Skylake refresh, the i5-6267U including the Intel Iris 550 GPU (http://ark.intel.com/products/91166/Intel-Core-i5-6267U-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz) the current status says "Launched" instead of "Announced". Just like the status of all the other CPU units available from Haswell and Broadwell, this might be and hopefully is an indicator that we could expect 13" refreshes in the next couple of weeks.

As MSFT had such a surprising and convincing presentation of their Skylake product launches, Apple won't just let this holiday season pass by with microsoft being in the talks and under xmas trees for having fwd thinking products and by seducing people to check out w10 with quality build hardware made in-house for the very first time.

also, if you rewatch the old and legendary keynotes done by steve jobs (unibody MBP, iPhone 4, iPad) you can notice this overwhelming strong will and ambition to be years ahead of everybody and the unbreakable conviction apple is the only one being able to deliver tech-dreams in such perfection and simple ways.

as someone who really loves apple for what they have done inspired by this energy I would kinda be disappointed to see that apple has slowly built a comfort zone microsoft used to sit in during the ballmer days.

sorry guys but I am so excited about the upcoming rMBP release. I really need a new machine for my macrumors reading sessions :)

Well, no leaks at all, so something new and revolutionary is not very likely if an updated mbp would appear before christmas..

Thanks for the link. It's definitely more Up-to-Date than Wikipedia.

The i5-6267U, as well as the i5-6287U, are actually available. BUT, unfortunately, the appropriate i7 (6567U) is currently "announced", yet to be "launched". I can't imagine a 13' rMBP being released in these conditions.

oh yes, you made a good point! so just hope apple also gets early access to appropriate i7 chips just like MSFT does for the surface book.

and by being just days away from the reported iMac release next week I'll keep my hopes up.

of course I won't ditch the possibility of a mbp redesign next year in march, which will be very unusual considering the average update cycle of 8-9 months in the last couple of years.

Has anyone else noticed there are no H processors in that list with HD 550 graphics?

I did. Only HQs with HD Graphics. CPUs for 15' MBPs are yet to be announced, around Q1 2016, that's why they're missing.

Macrumors.com said:
Intel announced a number of new 45-watt "H-Series" processors, but none with the higher-end Iris Pro graphics Apple uses in the 15" Retina MacBook Pro. Skylake H-Series chips with Iris Pro graphics are not expected to launch until early 2016, and Intel has yet to release detailed specs on these chips.

Why do you assume this? We know nothing about it, apart from the name, and it is not like the technology improvements meant for Cannonlake, sans 10nm, could not be incorporated. The tick-tock cycle is not only a matter of die shrink vs. other improvements.

the surface 4 and surface book uses i5-6300U. Sure there other variants but they are 15W. Not 28W as the macbook pro. They said 50% faster I think they meant in graphics

So with the different Skylake series coming out at different times, would iMacs, Mac Minis be in line for a refresh before mBPs?

My current 15" fully optioned MBP is a stellar performer!

It gets pushed hard long and extensively for the entire day performing the tasks required of it for my work.

That said and while I am very satisfied, after about eight years of the same old thing, it would sure be nice if they'd give J. Ive some oxygen... or whatever he runs on, so as to get this models appearance refreshed and out of it's stale old case. :D

So, the new iMac is out. No Thunderbolt 3. No Skylake.
Seams like Apple needs more time with its Skylake offerings. (Also would habe been strange if the smaller iMac was more modern then the big one).

Judging from the buyers guide it is not uncommon for MacBooks to come in February it seams…

Guess no Skylake if we have an update before 2016....

The New 4K 21" iMac still mounts the old Core i5-5675R (the BTO top of the line) CPU.
