I'm looking at that $999 deal on the 13" at Best Buy too right now. I need a laptop within the next week or so. If I bought that now for $999, do you guys think I would be able to resell it for a decent price following the release of the Skylake model? (I'd hope to break even since it would only be a couple months old and in great condition).

Do people think the Skylake MacBook Pros will be see a price increase? If so I might just grab the 256 GB rMBP for $1399...(student discount, and yes I am an actual student :p)

I wouldn't count on breaking even. The model is pretty much valued at the price it's being sold at now. That value will drop because it's used, the value will drop because it will be an older generation, and its value will drop because the warranty will be shorter. Factor in the cost of resale where eBay takes about 17%, but Craigslist usually commands a lower price, and it works out poorly either way.

But think of those costs as the cost of renting a laptop for a certain period. How much would you pay for four months of using it? $50/month? $100/month? Because it will probably be somewhere in between those two.

So the Kaby Lakes are actually rumored to be coming out in September IFA for the Y, U, and H variants.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-roadmap-processors/

"...in regard to the mobile Kaby Lake processors. These are expected to actually launch before their desktop counterparts in devices that will be showcased during IFA 2016 in September. These will consist of the Kaby Lake U, Y, and H processors, mostly utilizing two physical cores save for the H models, which will have four."

I would assume the article is assuming these variants will be coming out together when in reality only the U or Y will be released. --not the H family. And definitely not the HQ family
Nevertheless, the U family could be used in these supposed new macbook airs....

hmmmmmmmmmmm very interesting

People around here seem to think their used, dented 2009 and 2010 base model macbook air and 13" pro are worth $600-$700 dollars so, I think if you posted a barely used 2015 13" still with Applecare you should get back a lot of it since its already so discounted.

Nowhere does this say all mobile Kaby Lake variants will be released at the same time. It doesn't say they won't either.

Don't read into something that isn't there.

"The first chips to be released under this three-phase cycle will represent the seventh-generation Core family, codenamed Kaby Lake - and Intel is confident it will have them out of the door before the end of the year. 'Two new products will be coming from Intel later this year,' Intel's Navin Shenoy claimed during the company's Computex keynote speech. 'Apollo Lake for the value and entry-level PC, 2-in-1, and tablet, and the 7th Generation Core, formally codenamed Kaby Lake, will be coming later this year. We have over 400 designs coming to market on the Seventh Gen Core, and you can expect lots of innovations from our OEM partners bringing this product to market.'"

Here's another one bud.

EDIT: Also its really not a new idea. We all knew the low wattage kaby lakes were coming soon.

I remember Oct 2008 first MBP w/ aluminum unibody. The greatest! ( according to Apple) bought one in Nov. then Feb comes and a huge upgrade much faster processor, double the ram, memory card reader, and several other nice upgrades, same price. I lost my mind! I called to complain and try to do something about it and they told me to go to hell. I can see a replay of that coming this fall. If Surface book comes in 15" soon, I am gone. I will also be looking at other 15 laptops, sick of Apple games.

Actually the improved version which turned the 13" MacBook into a 13" MacBook Pro did NOT come out in Feb. but only in June. SO basically ¾ of a year later!
So there was no reason for you to complain. Unless you actually bought it in May... but then again... not Apple's fault.

well they should at least 15%. in my render tests today mid-2015 performed only 3-5% vs 4 years old mbp. Well for that price i hope at least 10-15%. when I bought retina and replaced my old one 17" it was blazing fast! nearly twice.

The 4870HQ and 4970HQ still beat the 6700HQs found in pretty much every quad core PC laptop. After 2011, any noticeable increase in speed is going to be either from the SSD or GPU. Sky or Kaby lake isn't going to magically make a 28W dual core 13" rMBP viable for someone who is maxing out a 47W quad core 15" rMBP on a daily basis, simple as that.

How could you forget about USB-C and TB3?!?!?! :p

In order of importance:
- Me being drunk
- Kittens
- Me being drunk again
- More kittens
- "Will the next MBP use Kaby Lake?"
- Memes (and more kittens of course)
- "I don't want dGPU"
- "I want dGPU"

plus some suicides, identity crisis, delusions, depression, lost faith in human race.
It's a nice place to be, this.

Posts like these make me feel dumb. U h y hq ifa so many lakes so little time

The XPS has a unibody aluminum case. Hardly plastic. The XPS is a decent Windows based competitor to Apple's offerings. The camera is of course a weak point, but that was a design decision in order to keep the upper most display clean and "edge to edge". You want to talk bezels, have a look at the Macbook Air, yuck. The battery is another weak spot on the Dell with the infinity display, but that supposed IGZO panel drains juice. If that compromise is not acceptable, then the non 4K LCD is the way to go. Then you have some great battery time.

It's super easy to bash the Dell on an Apple forum, but Dell is at least trying to stay cutting edge. Something that can't be said for Apple of late. I give them props for at least working on new designs. The latest EDU pricing at the Microsoft store gives you a XPS 15, i7, Infinity 4K display, 16GB ram and a 512SSD for $1697. That's a pretty nice discount from the same Apple configuration. That $500 difference is another compromise with regard to construction quality. The rMBP will have better resale which is expected when it costs 25% or so more. And, you don't have to pay $200 for 8GB additional memory or $450 for an additional 512GB of SSD storage with the Dell.

There is no right or wrong way to go. Just choices with compromise. Depends on what features mean the most to a buyer. Price? Upgradability? Ports? Battery Life? Construction? etc. My biggest complaint is the slow pace of computer hardware from Apple. Computers are tertiary to the iOS system and iOS devices.

Apple is really testing me here. Soldering ram in a Mini when there was no form factor change. Soldering memory in a 21" iMac but not a 27" (Both have space inside for sockets). Dell's XPS has the same weight and nearly same dimensions while providing Ram slots and an easy to change SSD. I could go on about the Mac Pro deficiencies etc but that's been stated many times over. It's a challenge to be an Apple customer these days for users that do not develop for the Apple eco system. I am also on the edge of looking at Dell. I may need be 100% satisfied with that move, but I hate to continually feed the beast that is Apple.

Man it's super difficult to keep up with this thread haha.

Bezels - Air isn't that nice of course, but the rMBP, even if it's bigger, looks really good (subjective of course, but at least to me), and significantly better than the Dell.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Dell at all, I just figured among all the hype that it's actually an awesome design (design only, not specs) and I didn't quite find it so nice. Maybe the body is aluminium or whatever it is, but it didn't feel as nice to me.

Otherwise of course, fair play to Dell for experimenting and experiments are something I really miss when it comes to both laptops and mobile phones, but at the end of the day I feel like for me personally the Mac is still the better overall laptop (design + specs). There are significantly more powerful laptops but they come at the expense of size/weight/battery and I guess in the end it's just about what everyone needs. I'm a power geek and always want more but generally speaking a Macbook Pro + a PS4 is a good enough setup for me to satisfy all my needs. :D

This is indeed a monster thread. But all macOS desktop related 'waiting for the ____ thread' are monster threads.
C'mon Apple - already sold my 2014 rMBP prior to WWDC in anticipation for this. I know it will be overpriced, has less ports, but 'shutup and take my money' worthy, but I'm not sure how long I can use my iPad Mini 2 as my only decent portable device.

What's currently better than the 13" rMBP?

I can only think of the Surface Book, which is more expensive.

It's not about "better" because better is different for everyone. It's about paying a hefty premium for an Apple product that uses old - no, ancient technologies; and in a few months the current model is going to be completely revamped in every way. How do you tell a friend to spend thousands on that type of product?

Not a single post in 5 hours??!!! What's happening??!!
People stopped to care about the new MBP :) It is hard to talk nonstop about a NOTEBOOK without leaks and rumors. I think, we talked about every single rumor and leak .. Each event is a dissapointment(for MBP fans), so it's hard to stay strong :p

So can't someone just make up a new rumour to keep it a bit fun?

I know it seems like we haven't had a lot of rumors, but I can't think of anything new we could learn about the Skylake MBP.

Think about it: we've seen the chassis, we know it will have 4 USB-C ports, we know it will probably be lighter, thinner, more battery, faster performance but only marginally. 15 inch will probably have Polaris dGPU option.

What else is there? Furthermore, what else do we want? People keep saying Apple doesn't innovate, but all I ever see from competitors are gimmick features I don't care about and which don't survive into a second generation.

If WE can't imagine a better laptop, nobody can. What will impress us in September, October, or whenever we actually see this thing?

I had trouble selling my 2012 rMBP 15" w/ 16gb RAM for $1000 in Los Angeles, didn't even receive a lowball offer

The key getting a good price is if there is a warranty or at least AppleCare that give you 3 years. The thing scares me the most buying a used laptop or any computer is lack of warranty.
Here in SD there are a lot of old MBP at really high prices and they seem not to be selling well. The ones with warranty seem to sell well if the owner is not greedy. I've got a 2015 discounted at 30% or 40% the original price if you add the CA tax. That is reasonable.
