It will be pretty sucky if we would have to buy additional cable just to do a initial sync for our iPhone with our in-the-future-macbook-pro assuming they do away with all the usb a ports...

Since we are talking about the iPhone, the fact Apple is apparently continuing to use Lightning on their phones is a massive disappointment.

Not really, USB-C isn't that ubiquitous just yet. Maybe a couple more years (or at Apple's pace, 4-5 years in time for the next MBP revision).

If Apple doesn't release USB C iPhones, I'm jumping over to Android. It'll be a great experience using a USB C MacBook Pro and phone.
Guess you're gunna have to jump ship, Apple already sells Lightning to USB C cables. It's clear that they're not taking away lightning anytime soon

I don't see it as a disappointment. That apple controls as many aspects of the hardware as it possibly can is part of what makes the apple experience so superior (and what makes windows so terrible). A lot of these industry standards are compromises. I'm glad apple doesn't compromise often.

IMO, the redesign will be a major disappointment if it doesn't include a XPS-like bezel (or lack thereof). The hardware jump from the 14/15 models just seems really insignificant in real life use.

Except usb c isn't a compromise and Apple had a major hand in its creation.

Well if that IS where they are headed, pretty greedy on their part. They're one of the first to propel forward a connectivity system, and then proceed to step back on their stance in order to satisfy their greed by still retaining proprietary ports. That doesn't represent the innovative, and passionate corporation Apple once was.

They get called greedy for keeping the lightning ports and they will get called greedy if they change them to USB-C.

At this point most people have just gotten over having to replace all their 30 pin cables and accessories, they won't be happy if they have to do it again so soon for USB-C.

Maybe in another three to five years when USB-C is fully in place it might make more sense to go ahead and ditch lightning.

The TBD had to go anyway, not because it was a bad product, but because Apple neglected it. No TB2? No USB 3.0? I have an dell 27" ultrasharp next to my 27" cinema display, it's got zero sex appeal but it was (relatively) cheap and it works with no gloss. If it had magsafe it'd be great.

I see nobody's posted this yet... so I'm going to just drop this John Gruber link then go to my bedroom and hide my head under the pillow while the adults downstairs argue really loud.

The purpose of removing the jack in the iPhone was for waterproofing and/or thinness. There is absolutely no reason to bring that to the laptop. The MBP market doesn't want a thinner laptop, nor is the former even a possibility. If Apple really does this, it's just in spite. "Go buy the dongle" is its message, and I won't support a company who really thinks it can get away with that through these expensive computers.
