I've been a Mac/Apple fanboy since before most of you were born. I love OS X.

Apple is apparently a computer company, they just focus on trinkets, trash, and toys.

I don't need headphones, a silly watch, or a stupid toy to work on the sofa with. (Although I have one).

I'm ready to ditch Apple. But they abandoned me, I didn't abandon them.
I'm not trying to be pedantic when I say: Apple is _not_ a computer company. They deliberately dropped that part of their name. Apple is now (or is at least more than it was before) merely another consumer product company.
Frankly, the rumoured Apple Car is hammering the nail in the coffin of my support for them. I will gladly jump ship to Linux when it offers a viable desktop alternative for the average Joe, with the quality, polish, ease of use and, above all, hardware support and integration that had been synonymous with OS X. I would gladly back a Kickstarter campaign for a Mac-focused Linux distro that aims to bring those things to fruition on a Mac-by-Mac basis.

TBH there should be a 3 year warranty on defects on electronics. Those 1 year is like saying our product sucks and don't expect it to work more than one year.
You should investigate the consumer law in your legal jurisdiction(s): you are more than likely protected for significantly longer, with a healthy chance of achieving a free repair on a product up to five years after the date of purchase, perhaps longer.

Lol. So then never.
This is, unfortunately, my fear. Yet I become less discriminating as time passes, and more willing to make it work, instead of waiting for someone else to make it work on my behalf.

Can you explain this a bit more? Im completely confused

iMac got Skylake already, and I don't see a form factor change with no internal improvements. There's no rumors about a redesign for iMac, while we've had chassis and hinge rumors plus Kuo's 'biggest update ever' comment since May.

They're still using a 3.5" drive in those things, aren't they? I would imagine they've gotta kill that at some point, even moving down to 2.5" drive would save space but my guess is they'd go straight to the blades ala the rest of the lineup. I haven't cracked open a 2012+ model before but imagine that's taking up most of the hump and generating quite a bit of heat.

When the new MacBook Pro comes out, how many of you guys are going to buy AppleCare? Is it worth it?

Never had it. I'd check your credit card benefits, I just found out mine has 1yr extended warranty for stuff purchased on it. If that's true, I'd probably not bother with AC as in the past nearly all of my major repairs have been either free due to known issues, or the last time I had to pay for one I got a bunch of things fixed at the same time under the flat rate repair program, and that was outside the period that AC would've covered anyway.

The current freaking 15" Macbook Pro is what, 3 generations behind in current Intel CPU/GPU?

No.
[doublepost=1471051825][/doublepost]
It's $250 for the 13" and $350 for the 15" from Apple. Places like B&H Photo sell it a little cheaper ($230 and $300 respectively).

I don't know when it went down, but it's only $239 now from Apple —

How much time do you have?

Like anything else you roll the dice. If you can budget for it then thats the way to go. Credit card protection is nice but i'd use that in addition to Applecare. I've had some machines not had any issues but one that was replaced completely with Applecare.

2006 MBP - Ten years strong (crowd goes wild) running rock solid except needing to replace the battery. The best MBP ever.
2007 MBP - Sold, but I believe it was later replaced completely
2008 MBP - Replaced by Apple (4+ warranty repairs)
2010 MBP 17" - No Issues
2011 MBP (Work Rig) - Exhibiting GFX issues
2016 MBP - ?

Gruber has speculated on his podcast that Apple may release the new MacBook Pros without showcasing at the September event. He thinks they may just release it and hold press briefings.

Aww man forget that, lol. We've been waiting too damn long. Not only do I want a keynote, not only do I want an Ives video. forget that, I want Ives to come out on stage and talk about it. I'll even take Schiller at this point.

1) I don't think choosing a new hard drive bay size warrants an event announcement. SSDs are already an (overpriced) option for iMacs, so that's not much of an improvement. Besides, just because the bay is larger doesn't mean it's going to run hotter. Smaller with same performance almost always means more heat issues, not less. Plus, the iMac isn't hurting for its size right now.

2) There are no iMac update rumors at the moment. This alone should tell you there won't be an update this fall.

Do you have a link for that podcast? I have a feeling you might have misinterpreted simply because you call it a "press briefing." That implies a physical meeting, which is an event, which is the opposite of what the rest of your statement implies, which is a "press RELEASE." A link would help clarify, though if he's speculating it's of little predictive value anyway. WE speculate, but the Grubers and Gurmans are known for LEAKS, not speculation.

Just got off the phone with them they said i can do that. Just not sure how much needs to be on the card. 50% other payment and 50% amex but ill find out more later

You can max out your card, then pay the rest with the cash. Or the other way around. It's up to you how the split between card and cash. I do it whenever I have cash that I won't to get rid of, as I prefer to only carry plastic. Even for a small can coke.

i really only wanted to put 500 on the card is the thing. 500 amex rest cash or different account. 500/2500

"You will only be covered up to the amount charged to your Card, up to $10,000 per occurrence, and coverage cannot exceed $50,000 per Card Member account per calendar year. Any shipping and handling costs from the original purchase won't be refunded."

The way i read this is that if i only use 500$ on the card and something happens to my computer after applecare, i can only get back 500$ that i charged to the card. Not the full 3000$ computer.

You can transfer the cash you want to use to your Amex card before you pay in order to increase your limit. This way you can pay the entire amount with the card and get the full extended warranty.

They do hold physical meetings with the tech press occasionally, they did it to discuss the iPhone security during the San Bernadino/ FBI situation. They are behind closed doors briefings with selected Tech outlets.

He is speculating, he makes that clear. Link to the podcast here, Macbook Pro discussion starts at around 1.09.00

Apple is a company of patterns. Therefore it seems highly likely to me that Apple will hold a keynote in October to unveil the new MBP's. Also, September events almost exclusively have been used for iOS related hardware, so I'm not sure why anyone would expect a new MBP to launch at a September event.

Lol. So then never.
I've literally been trying out Linux as a desktop alternative now and then for 10 years, hardly any progress has been made. Windows ans macOS are miles ahead. I love Linux as a server OS using the terminal though.

Not really. Somebody at Apple told John Gruber last year that they didn't want to hold a separate October event going forward.

I don't even know what to think of this anymore.

I'm not stuck on the Apple ecosystem anyways, I just want a mac because it's good quality build, pretty OS and awesome battery life. But this whole wait is making me look to alternatives. There are some nice 14'' laptops with quad core cpu's and nice graphics cards... I'm tempted.

Really don't want to wait till October/November for a PC, I need one for September. Would just try to wait if the Mac's were announced early and they were worth it. But I can't wait till October without knowing nothing about them.

that was last year...they were likely planning to show off the new MBP at WWDC I suspect...but that didn't work out, so October is likely back on the table as there's no way Apple would want to just release something with new features people don't understand via a press release; Apple would want to bring a lot of attention to a redesign to build the hype machine up.

I doubt it was ever on the cards for WWDC to be honest. Ming Chi Kuo was saying Q4 back in May.

Might actually apply for an Amex and purchase apple care, 4 years with a warranty, will only have to last 1 year without warranty to hit my 5 years.

While I like your thinking, I'm not sure it works that way. My thinking with a creditcard warranty and something like apple care is that it is still only 3 years. basically years 1-2
have double coverage.

Companies may offer you a warranty, that is, a contract that grants you certain rights with regards to a faulty product. But the laws of your country/state/region frequently grant you rights also, and these rights may extend your right to a repair well beyond the meagre 12 or 24 months offered by the equipment manufacturer.

I speak from experience. My MBP received a significant set of repairs after the AppleCare had expired (and not by a narrow margin) that were _completely_ covered by local law and were therefore free of charge.

I agree with you. IME it's the hardware integration that is chiefly responsible for the poor experience. I re-iterate: I'd happily add my funds to a sincere attempt to produce high-quality, comprehensive drivers for Macs running Linux.
