haha i replied to you on twitter, not knowing it was you who'd asked Tom Warren about the KL situation.

I don't know how Apple can release Kaby Lake MBPs, unless they settle for inferior chips.
Ha! Small world.

Tom seems convinced that the new MBPs will be KL. Which gets me way more excited for whatever Apple's going to announce. HYPE TRAIN IS BACK IN THE STATION CHOO CHOO.

Given how obsessed Apple are with thinness a 13" with a 15W CPU wouldn't surprise me that much.

Leaving the 15" as the only Pro model, which it currently is anyway:p

what do you think about a 13" coming within end of the year (or september, even) and the 15" delayed to whenever those intel chips become available, or delayed until KL alltogether?
it won't be the first time they introduce the 15" some months later than the 13".

Entirely possible, but depends what they're thinking in terms of chips used. Like many here I'm not that concerned by having to wait, it's the not knowing that's most annoying. I think even if they gave a date for release in December or January, current sales wouldn't be hurt too badly. It allows those who are on the fence and need something now to just pull the trigger, and builds excitement for those who are willing to wait and give them something to save for and splash out on.

. . . after the last (anniversary?) Windows 10 update, Microsoft has brought the infamous sleep-of-death issue to my ASUS Zenbook. Shutdown doesn't work reliably, too. Only Hibernation seems to work well, but even this can fail to shutdown the notebook (but no data loss yet). . .
Update to this story: By coincidence, I became aware to install current Intel management drivers to solve the problem. Now, after several weeks struggling with Windows 10, everything works again as expected.

The other thing I was suffering was the limitation to a 2 cores CPU, and I was really ready to get the current Macbook Pro 15, until I saw the ASUS Zenbook Pro (UX501VW) for half the price with i7-6700HQ and NVIDIA960 GPU. The matte screen with 4K resolution (3840x2160) is also very good (albeit with the usual HIDPI Windows issues for some applications, not many but still happening).

The ASUS will probably keep me from jumping into Apple's current and upcoming offerings for quite some time. We will see how long my Windows affair lasts :).

I'm still T R I G G E R E D by the retarded oled function row. REALLY??

Can someone explain me why other companies are able to use Kabylake in their laptops and Apple has to wait some more months?

to put it simply. Skylake and Kabylake are like saying 2016 Toyotas and 2017 Toyotas. Mac is going to put the 2016 Avalon in their computer which just came out, while the computer makers that are putting Kaby in their computers are putting in Yaris' . (you have to look at the specific models of Skylake and Kabylake that are going into the computer). I'd much rather have a just released '16 Toyota Avalon than a just released 2017 Toyota Yaris.

Seems that Apple is obsessed to omit dedicated graphics cards like devil omits holy water. My ASUS Zenbook with a low level NVIDIA 840 GPU has still about double the graphics performance of a Macbook Pro 13 retina, and the CPU is also at a similar level. Build quality may be inferior, but so is the cost. The only advantage of Apple is OS X, but for me this will not stay forever.

Are we seriously considering the option of Apple waiting for Kaby Lake? Skylake was available in May, too, but they didn't release a new MBP immediately, so even if the Kaby Lake chips are ready in January, it could be March before they release a new MacBook Pro. That's two full years since the last refresh. Don't even want to think about that happening :(

I am repeating my question. Why is it a bad idea to have high end macbook pro with freesync monitor @144hz (most probably it will contain amd gpu).

I play only one game i.e. dota 2 and most of the things are related to my work on mac.
I can't shift to windows just to play this one game.

Also, how about getting iMac. Will it support monitor @144hz connected via minidisplayport.
If you always want to play the latest games at the highest resolution, you really need to get a dedicated Windows-based gaming rig.

But this doesn't sound like you. DotA 2 will run just fine on a modern MBP.

I still use my 2012 rMBP for gaming. Until recently, it worked well. The latest titles won't run on it anymore. But it is 4 years old. I'm expecting the new MPB will get me through the next few years, especially if the rumoured eGPU options come to pass.

That`s been a longterm goal of Apple`s, I even remember Steve Jobs stating the same years ago. As the dGPU in many respects go directly against Apples ethos of simplicity, thin & light and extensive margins.

I'm intrigued and can't wait to try it before I judge. I made a list back in May when the rumours of the OLED strip first surfaced:

- App specific contextual items (shortcuts, menu items etc)
- Alerts and notifications
- Menu bar & dock replacement
- This would also breing a more iPad Pro-style multitasking approach to Mac, with the entire main screen filled with one or more apps only. All other items like menu bar, dock, sidebar are relegated to a screen on the keyboard)
- Visual copy/paste (instead of guessing what's on your clipboard, you can see it)
- iTunes (and other media app) mini player with track info
- Integration with Homekit: check and control lights, temperature etc
- Multitasking & window management / Expose replacement
- In addition to touch, swipe and other gestures can add more benefits as well. I can even see creative use for two-handed touch (one hand on the touchpad, one hand on the touch strip), like music or video editing.

The more I think about it, the more interested I am!

Well until now, it sucked every time one tried.

Thanks mate, at last a good reply. But you didn't answer my question. Will I be able to play dota 2 in 144hz FreeSync Monitor connected to high end rMBP with AMD GPU.

Hopefully we find out what exactly this OLED touch bar is next Wednesday. So far, I consider it one of the most ridiculous gimmicks yet; especially since you lose the physical function row which in itself should be a sin.

Still praying for a 2016 15" rMBP in the current chassis with an Iris Pro 580 and 6770HQ for $1699-$1799 to go along with the new flagship.
