Agreed. Progress for the sake of progress (or change for the sake of change, if you will) is to be discouraged. My biggest problem with the lack of new MBP isn't lack of "innovation" either. I don't even want it to be any thinner; I thought it was fine the way it was. If they can make it thinner without sacrificing power or cooling, go for it, but it's not a need for me.

At this point the main thing I want to see (aside from faster processor) is a wide-gamut display (now that the iMac, iPad, and iPhone 7 have it, I think the MBP deserves it!) and option for more ram. Otherwise, I don't need them to "innovate" much more. I know that's people's biggest complaint about Apple (no innovation!) but it's not mine. I just want a current computer that justifies the high price; I don't care how "different" it is.

Totally agree. Innovation for the sake of innovation will almost always result in a destruction of a true and better progress. In short: It´s been driven or motivated by a wrong idea or emotion.

And, as already stated, Apple has made a butterfly mechanism keyboard with more travel in the Magic Keyboard and this could be the same travel they go with in the MBP as it won't be as thin as the rMB.

This information is wrong. The Magic Keyboard uses a redesigned scissor mechanism with less key travel. Only the rMB uses the new buttefly mechanism at this moment. The rMB was a niche product at first with several risky introductions (only one usb-c port, the controversial butterfly keyboard...). Like a prototype on sale. But when they released the new keyboard (something with massive sales), they were more conservative and chose old mechanism "with less key travel". Now, the new rMBP is a key product of their future product range like the iMac. So, what mechanism will they choose? Interesting question, isn't it?

Off topic: is there any possibilty to see the new rMPB in black (dark, space or piano...). It would be awesome!!

i wonder what Amd dGPU could Apple put into the 15" MBP
AMD Polaris 11 full chip with 1024 shaders (RX 460 has 896 only) and bit down locked to maintain a 50w TDP. 4G of VRAM should be possible.
It should have performance that is between the 960m and 970m(aka 965m perf) , should be better than the M390 in the mid tier iMac 5K.
Meanwhile the iMac 5K this year could get the full-fat RX 470 without down clocking, and preferably 8G of GDDR5.

Honestly a thinner, lighter machine is top of my wish list for the new Macbook Pro, assuming that they can keep the battery life and performance consistent with what they are now. I have to buy the 15 inch because some of the software I use requires a quad core machine and if they can make it more portable I would be happy with that.

Wow, the current MBP's arent thin or light enough, or portable enough for you? If theres some kind of degenerative muscle issue you suffer from, I apologoze. Even so, why not just get a rmb and stop egging on Apple to ruin the so-called 'pro' laptops for the rest of us.
Whats the point in having a 'pro' line if theres sp little difference between the pro and consumer lines?

No it isn't light and thin enough for me either - I will be purchasing an iMac for heavy work and a 13" macbook 'pro' to do work in short spans of time out the office. I have had a 15" since 2014 as my desktop and it is not good enough in terms of speed for me.
BTW I work with 3D models and graphic files.

So they either make it bigger and heavier and a real desktop solution that is taken out rarely or a bit lighter and smaller to allow me to take it everywhere.

Each to their own - it is never going to be perfect for everyone. I need something with a little less power but more portable, and am happy with the solution of a separate desktop computer [imac]. A laptop on its own is always a compromised solution as I have discovered and am really looking forward to changing it.

I am speechless. Apple listening to customers like you means there will be no real 'pro' line in the near future. Just sad

What do you mean by 'pro' then? It has never really been fast enough for me in the last 10 years, and as I say I always have a compromised solution with one. Apple will never deliver the 'laptop' I need in terms of power for my 'pro' usage. If you want faster I suggest you look at Dell, HP etc. who provide workstation laptops. The macbook pro is certainly not one of them, which is why I will go for a desktop solution next.

I do want a better laptop than a macbook for my work out of office, but there is scope to thin the current line down further and reduce the weight and keep a similar performance to the current machines which were designed what 5 years ago now - I call it technological progress, as has happened with all Apple products I have used over the last 18 years. they will thin down, and I think you will be disappointed in the forthcoming months.
The current laptops performance is fine, just not great and I am sure the new machines will be at a similar level with a better graphics performance with better portability.

BTW Apple doesn't listen to its customers - they will tell us what we are getting..............

Yeah I've been using an iMac for the past few months and the fact that I can't take it anywhere is really bugging me...

I want a laptop that is a desktop replacement (15" MBP) and my iPad will be my "take everywhere less powerful" machine. I still will take my laptop everywhere because I don't consider a 15" MBP to be that big or cumbersome.

But yeah, I thought the iMac/iPad solution would work for me, but it doesn't. Must have a powerful computer that I can take with me; that's why the laptop is such a nice "middle" between these two extremes. More portable and convenient than an iMac, more powerful and functional than an iPad. That's why I can't believe I haven't had a laptop of any kind since March...

Problem is the 'middle' has its fans blasting out at me a lot and is not as fluid in use as I would hope. Maybe the new pros are much better but I am not putting money on it judging by the cpu speed increases in the last few years. It will be a new design with incremental speed increase again and much improved graphics from what I understand.

Really there have been too many times now where I have wished I had a quicker laptop but there have been no decent options [from Apple] for a while now to meet my needs. I can understand your frustration as I have been holding off making a move too until this latest batch are released and an informed decision can be made. If the new 15" are really great and a 5k monitor is released I will get one, but my gut says imac and 13" will be for me.

It was very generous of Apple to extend the motherboard replacement for late 2011s until the end of 2016.

My late 2011 is still going strong after getting the mobo replaced earlier this year.

Your are right it is about speed and usability.
The most important innovations during the past few years had been pen support, handwriting recognition and touch support.
Touch brought by Apple and Pen by Microsoft. But only Microsoft was able to create a powerful desktop operating system aka. Windows 10.
Apple is losing the operating system / software battle and is even not able to support new and powerful laptop / desktop hardware with pen and touch support.

Apple firmly believes the answer towards that direction is iPad Pro, with its omnipotent operating system known as iOS.

If you aren't waiting for a major redesign in the rMBP, just buy a laptop when you need one. The current XPS15 and rMBP 15 are plenty powerful that you won't feel like you're getting an out of date computer.
Maybe you won't feel it right now, but in 2 years the CPU of the current MBP will be almost 5 years old and the ports outdated. You'll definitely feel it then

It looks and feels very outdated now when you have used a macbook. I never thought this until after using a macbook for a few months and then back to the 15" - it amazed me how old it felt then.

No doubt in October we will have some super nice new macbookpros to play with and we can all whinge if they are underpowered, too light, not good enough graphics, why did they take the headphone jack out, where is Kabylake [even though it is not out yet], butterfly keyboard etc.

I will be happy with a lighter 13" with Skylake, OLED strip and butterfly keyboard [I really do like it] and a iMac fully loaded with polaris GPU. Anything else is a big bonus in my expectations.

Kids nowadays! I got that far with a Pentel pencil and a spiral notebook, even went so far as to get my Civil and Environmental Engineering degrees with them. Computers? Pfft. Ask my Fluid Mechanics professor: http://www.up.edu/dir/directory/showperson.aspx?id=000300242, I did OK. Cheers!

Different times. :D Seriously though, the school system and industry is so integrated into computers that not having a personal laptop as a student would be a huge inconvenience. I'm still working on my Civil degree. Here's my fluids professor:
http://www.cpp.edu/~engineering/ME/faculty/zhao.shtml

She's pretty much fresh out of school, although my Geotech professor, Donald Coduto, literally "wrote the book" on Geotechnical engineering. :p

What happened with Serban?? Last time I see this forum, before Summer I think, he was the star of the thread.
Apple...laws,but never mind. Two day until the iPhone event.Since the iphone will come in mat black and piano black, who thinks the macbooks will come in a mat black in Oct?

I hope apple brings the iPad pro's sound technology to the new MacBooks. The sound on my iPad Pro 12.9 is absolutely amazing for its size. I am wowed on a daily basis by the sound. It is at least "2x" better than the sound from my late 2011 15" mbp.
