Sidenote: No GT4e KabyLake planned, as some us have been saying since like...forever. Feel a little sorry for the guys over at the "Waiting for KabyLake thread" though.

Exactly my thought.
Those poor guys have no idea...

But maybe I could join that train of desperation and awaiting.
I could skip Skylake, buy an iPad and waiting with them for Kaby Lake.
It could be funny.
:D

Did you also think that Whiskey Lake was a joke name? :D Because it is...

OH YEAH THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

The roadmap is pretty self-explanatory:
12.09.2016tr_Intel_Roadmap_teaser.jpg

Right at the top, there is "Skylake 45W, 2-chip BGA, QC GT4e" which is in the market till Q2/2018. Even then, the replacement is GT2 only. Which means that Intel has at the moment no plans to offer a replacement for the Skylake CPU suitable for the 15'' rMBP until at least Q3/2018, or maybe they will drop Iris Pro Quad-Core mobile CPUs completely. I'm guessing we will see a Coffee Lake (Kaby Lake successor) GT4e CPU sometime in 2018 or 19. Which means that Skylake will be the new Haswell for the 15'' rMBP, so get it while it's hot.

Intel is basically aiming for good iGPU in 15/28W and mediocre iGPU with better dGPU in 45W chips. I think it's a good strategy. Ultrabooks will never have the power hungry dGPUs and almost every 45W laptop (except the MBP) have a good dGPU that complements the low power iGPU that Intel puts in to save battery. Apple could of course choose to put the GT2 graphics together with a Polaris dGPU in every 15" model but I doubt they would do that.

So what will the 13" get ? Any ideas?

It sounds really strange to me, Intel dropping Iris Pro GPU, after all the efforts they put on them, trying to equalize dGPU performances. o_O

The only things on 'buy now' are the iphone and watch...........
They were right when they took 'Computer' out of the company name.

So if I'm reading this correctly it's not inconceivable that Kaby Lake suitable for the 13" could be released Q1 next year?

Which means a March 2017 press conference...which makes sense to me.

But what doesn't make sense that Apple will miss another holiday season to sell MacBook pro's...if they go this route that is.

At least they could give us 15" MBP first with 45w QC Skylakes.

Well, they could still update the Airs, which is probably the more popular holiday machine anyway.

But I'm confident Gurman is right and we'll see new MBPs this fall.

I think the standard starting storage on the new Macbook Pro should be 512gb....not 256. It makes me sick how much Apple is obsessed with iOS devices. From a business standpoint I absolutely understand why. This whole freaking delay is because the stupid iPad sales started declining. When it comes to computers they should give us the best, not nickel and dime us. Make the starting 512, then 1tb, then 2tb. Sorry Im just pissed. Stop trying to revive the iPad. It still sells. Stop neglecting the Mac line. I will never replace my Mac with an iPad....ever.
That's an interesting point. Makes me wonder if they should simply outsource Mac computer development to some other company that would care, and put 100% attention to it. Or break Apple into separate slices of apple, like with one of those cool apple slicers that you push down and voila! perfectly sliced apple slices.

One of the biggest reasons to use MacOS laptops is how well they work with iOS and WatchOS. Dividing up the company would hurt that synergy and make Apple products overall less appealing.

And besides, if we're talking about the MacBook Pro, the delay in updating isn't really that bad IF Apple had waited a few months for the Broadwell upgrade in 2015. That was on Intel, not Apple. Breaking up the company wouldn't make MacBook Pros come out sooner.

You might have an argument when you look at the Mac Pro, but in my mind Apple made a massive mistake with that machine and pricing it as high as they did. Like the gold Apple Watch, it didn't sell well and Apple is letting it die a slow death so they can recouperate the R&D they put into designing it. Smart moves, but sad if you're the ultra-rare person who might actually be interested in a Mac Pro.

Next week the MBP will be the first product on the "Upcoming" section:

So get out of here with your 2017 nonsense.

And I swear if Apple has an event/press release in October and updates everything up there BUT the MBP, I will buy a Surface.

JK, I'll just keep waiting and posting memes while my XPS keeps burning my legs and hands.

so, other than the number of cores. What is the real difference between a 2 core and 4 core setup? Do most applications actually take advantage of the 4 cores?

Ok. So in regards to the 15 rMBP, can we not see a Kaby Lake Q1 2017 launch? Can they not use the GT2 chips? Or do they use the GT4E chips meaning we're stuck with Skylake until at least Q2 2018?

Do you guys think that the airpods launch in late october is in any way connected with a possible mac event?

Yep, they couldn't release them till the AirPods were ready /s

The OS is multithreaded, so you can multi-task better. And yes, most applications do take advantage of multiple cores, especially virtualization platforms like VMware Fusion and Parallels. In addition, the quad core procs include better iGPU.

The problem was that most of the people who buy machines like the 15"rMBP, XPS 15, or Razer Blade 14" want dGPUs. Intel's iGPUs were a significant improvement but couldn't keep up with AMD and nvidia's dGPUs. As a result there was little adoption of the Iris Pro. Considering only Apple, a select few windows laptops, and the VAIO Z Canvas adopted the Iris Pro, there was little push for Intel to get these CPUs out in meaningful time over other better selling CPU lines.

It was good experiment and I like my Iris Pro-only machine, but these CPUs aren't really going to be worth it if its going to be 2 generations behind all the time. I mean, going off the roadmap every 15" rMBP PC competitor will be on Kaby Lake by the end of 2016 for the same price.

Another example is Handbrake. It uses all eight cores in my 2014 MBP (four physical, four hyper-threading cores) to nearly 100%. At times the CPU utilisation, as reported by iStat Menus, goes to almost 800%.

HOLY C!!
Norways biggest mac retailer is selling all macbook pros at 14% off. Savings of up to 400$.
They are celebrating 14 years with 14% off. Sounds weird to me. Offer runs til end of september...

German retailer Gravis just started to offer some Macbook Pro bundles. Do I hear "sellout"? :)

Do you guys think that the airpods launch in late october is in any way connected with a possible mac event?

Nope, why would they sell a mobile device in September (which the Airpods are mainly for) and dont cash in until months later.
The APs are like the Apple Watch first gen. Not ready for mass production at their presentation.
