Anyone else listen to Gruber talking with Dalrymple in the Talk Show? Neither has any information about what's happening with new Macs, but both still believe there will be something this fall. Gruber is thinking they may not have an event, but instead have press briefings where they bring in the top journalists to check out the new products one on one. Gruber is still standing by the idea that Apple really didn't want to have two events back-to-back (Sept then Oct.)

He's right when talking about the 15", not the 13".
Hes wrong on both 13" and 15"

Why do you think I choose it?
In addiction, care to explain why I'm @WRONG?
Because every roadmap from Intel that i've seen have included U and H-series CPU:s in Kaby Lake, both suited for the 13" rMBP and 15" rMBP respectively, even the roadmap you posted in the very same post you claimed that no Kaby Lake CPU:s for any rMBP would ever exist. Even a SKU with slower iGPU from Kaby Lake is most likely just as fast as the current higher tier iGPU in the current rMBP:s. Also, we don't even know if maybe Apple will start to offer a dual core version for the 15" rMBP, the CPU:s usually found in the 13", unlikely, but possible. So there is several Kaby Lake CPU options for various SKU:s for the upcoming rMBP, so your statement "Proper Kaby Lake CPUs for MacBook Pro don't exist, and will never do." is 100% false.

I would believe this IF they have showed some respect to their customers in the meantime. For example, give a spec bump the current models - (512 for base rMBP)

However, they are selling the same machine at the same price for 1.5 year and maybe more. So no, they just don't care.

It'a true, Apple doesn't care. Well, they probably care just enough to not want the entire rMBP market to jump ship, but not enough to want to do their best anymore. They're leaving the door wide open (sorry for the mixed metaphors) for that mass exodus to happen however.

The reason Apple has gotten away with it even half as long as they have is because the rMBP came from such a position of strength relative to the competition. The Force Touch trackpad introduced in the last model is miles ahead of any trackpad on any other brand. The overall design aesthetic and build quality is still a classic and it has many pro features like optical audio and a built-in SD card reader among others. The screen stands up well despite falling behind the iPhone and iPad and MagSafe is still a selling point in my opinion. They also have macOS up their sleeves which is another key attraction for the hardware that's enabled their laziness.

Which is why it's bizarre that they're proposing to abandon at least two of those things that made the rMBP so great. And with each passing day not only does it give the competition time to catch up (which they have been slowly) but it increases the expectation on Apple themselves to do something major to keep people interested in the hardware and platform. I think Apple are keenly aware that in the past 6-9 months a simple spec bump wouldn't have cut it. People are expecting a major generational change in performance and portability. This is supposed to be possible with the shift to 14/16 nm fabrication so why has it taken so long?

Apple has the capital and weight to get what they want out of Intel, AMD or Nvidia but they choose not to. They could've easily paid Intel to make releasing suitable CPUs with Iris and Iris Pro integrated graphics a priority or at least fast-tracked, but they chose not to. The money and therefore the heart isn't in the Mac lineup anymore for Apple.

Apple are addicted to closing everything down and the relatively open nature of desktops isn't as attractive to them. They can't force their customers to buy software from them which gives them a sizeable cut. However it's this openness which is why only a laptop or desktop Mac will satisfy a lot of Pro users and why many in this thread are hanging out for an update.

Apple's attempt at marketing the iPad Pro as a serious laptop replacement is laughable. A decent professional drawing tool maybe but not a replacement for the Mac platform

- Every roadmap we both have seen don't include quad-core GT4 Kaby Lake, which have better performances of dual core, or H dual-core GT2. That's why proper CPUs for 15" MacBook Pro don't and will never exist. If you consider a dual core or a less performing iGPU a suitable solution for something that should be a prosumer machine, well, that's another matter.
- Meanwhile, there is a notable difference between what Intel says in the roadmaps and what actually happen in time.
Skylake H is listed in Q2 2016, and yet the only computer using it is the Intel NUC Skull Canyon. (read it: Intel delays CPUs as always).
"Proper" CPUs for MBPs are listed to come between end 2016/Q1 2017.
Also analysts say the refresh of the MacBook Pro line will come in Q4 2016.

It very, highly, almost certainly won't be Kaby Lake.

What are the chances the 13" rMBP will move to quad core? Dual core for a "Pro" laptop was always a stretch and simply won't cut it in late 2016.

That is the first step in making the rMBP great again!

First of all, "proper" Kaby Lake CPU:s for the 13" rMBP is not far away, so there goes half of your "Proper Kaby Lake CPUs for MacBook Pro don't exist, and will never do." claim. Secondly, quad core H-series, with GT2 or maybe even GT4 will exist early next year (depending on which roadmap you look at or which speculation you choose to listen at), quad core with GT2 will definitely exist fairly soon, and the GT2 is not a problem in combination with dGPU so there is your "proper" Kaby Lake for the 15" rMBP so theres goes the other half of your statement. Third, not every SKU of Kaby Lake processor is fitted within any given leaked roadmap, with Intel just released the very first of plenty Kaby Lake CPU:s in varies series, we have no idea about when Intel will release all the SKU:s of Kaby Lake, we have no way of knowing what specs all those SKU:s will have, only speculations/rumors.

"Proper" as in successor of the current CPU:s available in the rMBP will definitely exist. At IFA there was several Macbook Pro form factor computers with "unreleased" Kaby Lake CPU:s, those will definitely land in production.

"Proper Kaby Lake CPUs for MacBook Pro don't exist, and will never do." is definitely 100% wrong

Again. There will be Kaby Lake CPUs available for the 13" but not the 15". There are no GT4e CPUs planned for the 7th generation. Skylake will be the only GT4e enabled notebook chip till 2018, confirmed by Intel. (Where have you been? we even joked about this on the thread) Also, as you have noticed the majority of the H series are GT2 chips, and Apple won't downgrade to those because of the lack of integrated L4 cache the Iris GPU uses. There's no way in hell a bandwidth starved GT2 is going to be near the level of a current GT4e. Well, maybe in 2 generations. Anyways, I invite you to wait for a KabyLake GT4e Macbook Pro if you so wish to do so, just don't hold your breath...

EDIT: gosh. It's not rumors/speculation when you have the whole damn official Intel slide deck confirming no new GT4e notebook CPUs till 2018.

I don't think I've ever seen this thread so alive on a Sunday, the thirst for rMBP's (And 1000 pages) is real!

I am not waiting for any GT4 rMBP so don't worry, i still prefer dGPU so any CPU can have whatever crappy iGPU it wants.

Its irrelevant if any H/HQ Kaby Lake will have GT4 or not, for instance, the upcoming i7-7700HQ (which have been seen in the wild) or any other SKU in the series will definitly be a "proper" Kaby Lake CPU for a future rMBP, so to claim that no proper Kaby Lake CPU for a rMBP will never exist is absolutely not true.

Could you elaborate on the "seen in the wild" comment?

By looking at the graph above, I really not 100% sure if apple will release new MBP's in 2016 now. If Apple wanted to release skylake MBP's, they would've had them out already for sale.

Second, I honestly think apple is waiting for the 45w Kaby lake H series of processors to put into their 15 inch MBP's. For the 13 inch, I can see them going with the 15w/28w Kaby lake U processors, which is coming out in Q1 '17.

With that all said, I'm expecting a MacBook pro announcement/release in March 2017. Also, it gives them time to incorporate the LED strip or whatever in their regular macbooks as well.

But that is my opinion.

I forgot to write MBP 15". Ok, my bad. Now, relax please.
But, any proof of Kaby Lake CPUs 13" "not far away"? Genuine questions. Even Skylake has been "not far away" since, like, march. And yet 13" still go with Haswell.

Secondly, quad core H-series, with GT2 or maybe even GT4 will exist early next year (depending on which roadmap you look at or which speculation you choose to listen at)

Every roadmap has shown that there are not GT4 iGPU planned. And the last one seems pretty trustable to me.

, quad core with GT2 will definitely exist fairly soon
March? So Apple will wait more than two years to upgrade one of its most valuable computers? Contradicting all analysts previsions?
and the GT2 is not a problem in combination with dGPU so there is your "proper" Kaby Lake for the 15" rMBP so theres goes the other half of your statement.
dGPU that will (maybe) come only with the top specs 15" MBP, if it will have it.
And again, quadcore GT2 that will come... maybe december? More probably february/march?
Still, underpowered iGPU for most part of the MBP line.

Third, not every SKU of Kaby Lake processor is fitted within any given leaked roadmap, with Intel just released the very first of plenty Kaby Lake CPU:s in varies series, we have no idea about when Intel will release all the SKU:s of Kaby Lake, we have no way of knowing what specs all those SKU:s will have, only speculations/rumors.

...guess why we're still waiting on Skylake?

"Proper" as in successor of the current CPU:s available in the rMBP will definitely exist. At IFA there was several Macbook Pro form factor computers with "unreleased" Kaby Lake CPU

Yeah, shame was that those form factor were fitted with U-CPUs, less powerful than H-Skylake

Again. Not every SKU in the series will be proper.
Yes, of course Apple could stuck U or Y Kaby Lake, or even less powerful H, in the MBP, and they would be proper.
But it would be a downgrade.
I sincerely don't understand are can you consider a CPU less powerful as "proper".

In the end, relax, my friend. No one is getting harder.
We are all wrong in the end.
There, I offer you a beer.

Skylake H-Quadcore CPUs, even if listed, have not been seen yet anywhere.
Also, why so Apple didn't upgrade all the MBPs with Haswell?!

If Apple really want to downgrade all its computer lines, in addiction to missing god-knows-how many sales event, even while its computer sales are slowing down, I'm seriously done with this company, and they're seriously done with logic and common sense.

There are quad core skylake H cpu's out now as my Dell XPS 15 inch is quad core (verified w/ cpu-z as well)

All 6th gen skylake mobile cpu's 6700HQ and higher are all quad core mobile cpu's (link)and there is absolutely no reason why Apple couldn't put the 6700HQ quad core processor in their 15 inch model.

Why apple didn't upgrade all MBPs w/ haswell, I have no clue and I question if their insistence on using the aluminum uni-body is still a good idea they are having issues with these processors.

WRONG means the 6770/6870/6970HQ Iris Pro CPUs. The 6700HQ will NOT go into the 15" rMBP.

Thanks for clarifying and I apologize

No worries. :D Intel's classification and naming is a mess. i7/i5/i3/m3/m5/m7, 4.5W/15W/28W/45W, HD graphics/Iris/Iris Pro....

It really is ridiculous to keep up with this sometimes. :p

A sincere internet apology. Almost as rare as actual Mac rumours.

The good folks on Macrumors is what keeps me coming back. :)

/thread imploding into a black hole

So what's the reason why we are not getting Kabylake in the October???? Just kidding :)

It is hard to track the chips / if they are suitable or not and I get confused and understand why a lot of others do. This thread has turned into a fun read for me now and I am actually over the wait and have sort of given up on any excitement. I actually can't remember when I started following it, but feels a long long time, with similar reoccurring themes appearing every 10 pages.

As Wrong says, the black hole or as I referred to in a previous post, Groundhog day.

As an aside, any of you guys on ipad pros with the keyboard, pressing the left / right arrows and the thread goes to page end. Has happened since latest update and is driving me mad !
