The biggest benefit of port repertoire of the new MBP is that ports and their functions are truly standard. Every correctly implemented USB C cable or its Alternate Mode adapter cable should just simply work. Same applies to power supplies. One doesn't need to pay "Apple tax" for these components any more.
You have a point there, with the new machines, we no longer have to buy Apple power adapter as they'll be 3rd parties options, also they'll likely be more power banks that's able to fully charge this machine allowing users to work longer without being plugged in.

A sad part on this is that quality of third party USB C power supplies (and some cables) at this point is awful. It's more common than not that cheap power supplies have a chance to fry your laptop (I especially suspect car chargers), or more likely, themselves (advertising more power than they deliver, and fail to handle overload properly). I believe situation is going to improve over time, although complexity of USB C ecosystem and various USB Power Delivery solutions complicate the market for a some while in to the future.

So Apple store received more orders for the new Macbook Pro than any other pro notebook before. (That's interesting phrasing. Did Apple ever sell pro notebooks that weren't Macbook Pros? But I'm sure it's a coincidence.) And that's before they even shipped – Schiller's remark is from November 2, the Touch Bar models wouldn't even be released for 10 more days.

Let's take a quick detour and visit the wonderful the world of music.

Album one reached the top of the UK chart. That's right folks! More sales for album one than any other pro notebook record! Nobody, I say nobody could sell more on that week than album one did. Can you imagine how many copies must have been ordered for this hit record?

Album two has never reached the top. Looooseeeerrrrssss!!!!! Could they probably say they had the most (pre-online I'm afraid) orders ever? No they couldn't! #2 is as good as they could manage to miserably limp! Can you imagine how upsetting it would be for Schiller to quip "well, the new Macbook Pros came second when it came to pro notebook orders we had on our online store"?

Album one is Christina Aguilera's "Bionic". It debuted in the UK at #1. Its chart run was: #1 -> #29 -> #45 -> #71 -> out of top 75.

Album two is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon". Its peak UK chart position is #2. As of this week, it spent 482 weeks in the UK top 75.

This is not to say rMBP16 is not selling well. I don't know that. They might be flying off the shelves. (Are returns flying back ON the shelves? Just asking.) It's just that the particular phrase Schiller used means nothing and its wording seems dubious at best.

Wow you put a lot of time in that one!

Apple is a public company and they'll be reporting numbers at the end of their quarter. We'll be finding out how well the MBPs sell then in hard numbers. If sales increased (as opposed to decreasing these past few quarters), we'll know that people are buying them.

I'd not really delve into their words, trying to see if its all doublespeak, people will vote with their wallets and the MBPs success (or failure) will come out.

They will report sales numbers, but that doesn't account for returns. There are numerous posts on here where a lot of you are returning your laptops 5-6 times for one reason or another.

You don't, because the "Apple Tax" is already figured into the purchase price of your Pro many, many times over.

I don't believe that Apple breaks down sales by Mac model in their quarterly reports. So we won't know how many MacBook Pros were sold per se. If overall Mac sales increase over the previous quarter, however, most of that will likely be attributable to the 2016 laptops.

My early 2011 15" is still going very strong and also with no history of GPU failure, but I can't stop drooling at the 13" non-TB. I'm hoping for a silent Kaby Lake refresh before summer. Is this a realistic estimate?

Some of us bet on a march refresh, when they'll switch to Kaby Lake and reduce the prices. I'm no longer waiting for this, because I decided to keep my current machine, but I hope it will happen!

I mean, that would be great for the people who are waiting for it but such a middle finger to everyone who bought one this fall. Then again I am considering returning it, so maybe I'll just wait till March anyway...

We won't know, but from the various sound bites they have made, it does seem Apple is pleased with the sales numbers.

I assume so as well, I was just joking about the mbp 2015 :)
We need macs and this was awaited, so no matter how bad it can be (perceived or real), what's the choice really ? If you're actually using it for PRO work, it's not that easy to switch to another platform.
I guess the sale will be comparable to what we saw for other iterations.

I had been hoping to ignore this update, and largely had, until my laptop was stolen a few weeks ago. Now, I'm forced back on the market and find myself between a rock and a hard place.

I really do prefer the 16 form factor and esthetics. The display and speakers are supposed to be clearly superior. Then there's the lighter weight. The touch bar is simultaneously beautiful to look at, while a constant slowdown and distraction in performing even the most mundane tasks.

OTOH, the 15 has all of the ports I want and need and then some. It's relatively affordable. The problem is, inventory is drying up as mac users make a run on the 15 models which are actually useable right here right now.

However, the form factor now seems hopelessly dated. The black white contrast between the keyboard and display hinge and the rest of the computer seems jarring and inappropriate. The keys seems fiddly and unstable, almost squishy. The display seems dim and washed out. It is not clearly well thought out strictly from an esthetic perspective.

It seems I'm now choosing between severely compromised options. It seems I'm leaning towards one of the 16 models with the hopes of a significantly improved release at some point in 17.

Now, I am choosing between the nt with superior battery life and the starbucks showstopper tb model with inferior battery life.

Man, sour apples for all apple users, unless you are rich.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a run on 2015 models, to the degree that Apple hadn't seen before.

I've been checking the last few days and the inventory of used laptops is being sucked dry at a pehonomenal rate.

That happens for every single Apple product :p

Had I owned a 2 or 3 year old Macbook Pro, I would have waited for Whatever-Lake. But running on a 2012 Macbook Pro and receiving a 25% discount on this current Macbook Pro had me buy right now. I've given up on trying to time-sync with Apple's Macbook Pro releases. It's a futile effort.

Apple employee discount?

You guys think we'll see trackpad Pencil support in the KabyLake model?
It's all a rumour and I think if they do introduce Pencil support, the current MBP will support it as well since why make a giant ass trackpad only to introduce an incompatible feature a year later. That's a way to piss on your users.

Joining this thread as I'll be buying a new high end 15" MacBook Pro as soon as the new models come out. Excited for the second generation Touch Bar MBP's. Hopefully some of the kinks get refined and by then USB-C is a little more widespread.

Here's my wishlist in order of what I think's most to least realistic... P.s. Haven't included particular CPU's or GPU's as hopefully it's a given Apple will include whatever the latest ones are. But after seeing Apple's reluctance to upgrade their 'pro' machines in 2016...who knows...

1) True Tone Display
2) Terraced battery cells
3) DDR4 RAM (the low power variety)
4) OLED display
5) In-built mobile connectivity (4G/LTE)

Pretty sure we'll get 1 - 3. 4 & 5 however are probably just a pipe dream...

Wow thats a pretty harsh critique of a product that was judged to be "great" up until it was recently replaced. I wonder what you will say about the current MacBook Pro next year when it gets replaced?
