Now that the 2016 Models are out, will you buy a 2016 Model?

  • No, They increased the cost far to much. The Apple i once new loved appears to have disappeared.

Kaby Lake SKUs suitable for MacBook Pro are officially announced.

Quick takeaways:
1. Iris is replaced by Iris Plus in U-series
2. No Iris Pro spotted in 45W i7 H-series, which means an iGPU 15" MBP looks less and less possible
3. No LPDDR4 support

Am I right that the quad-core version of KL that can be used in rMBP is now available?

From the Ars article: “it's worth noting that virtually no one other than Apple and Intel itself actually uses these chips and GPUs in any of their products.”

This lets me hope that we’ll see silently updated Kaby Lake / Iris Plus 13" MBPs rather sooner than later…

I also have the feeling that 13" will receive the update sooner than 15"

So long as they put a new processor in the 2017 15" MBP and get the previous battery size inside, it will be an instant buy for me. Otherwise the current model is simply lacking in terms of battery life

hopefully intel is able to include full hardware decoding for the new AV1 codec in Coffee Lake. That + quad core in 28W package would be perfect.

It feels so strange, to finally see Kaby-Lake coming...
:D
But seriously, which are going to be improvement over Skylake?
Also, upcoming KabyLakes have only Intel HD 630, which I suppose will perform slightly better then the Intel 540.
So what?

Funny to see you here :)
I thought you were free ! Are we bound by a curse to those thread or something ? :-D

About KL, you can find all the details online but mainly it's native handling of codecs but more importantly low TDP.
For slightly better performances, the Kaby Lake uses 15W while the CPUs in the 13" (maxed out or not) use 28W.
Which in turn, translate in longer battery.

According to the quoted Ars article they now have Iris (GT3e) graphics (called “Iris Plus”). That’s an important point, because before now Kaby Lake only had the lower performing GT2 graphics (“HD”).

That's wrong, there are 15 and 28w variants of Kabylake U, as there have been with Skylake (and earlier architectures) before. Macbook Pro 13" noTB uses 15w, 13" TB uses 28w. So no change there.

The "plus" moniker seems to be branding only, to differentiate between pre-Skylake GT3 (without EDRAM) "Intel Iris" and the version with EDRAM. "Intel Iris Pro" is the GT4e variant of skylake.

I am, finally, but I can't miss the opportunity to join another amazing "Waiting for... thread" :D

The Intel website says something different, as all the H-CPUs suitable for 15" have listed an Intel HD 630.
Also, always according to the Ars Technica article, those iGPU have 24 EU but without eDRAM, which is (from what I understand), the thing that make those iGPU powerful.
I'm quite confused.

I was referring to the chips for the 13" MBP (15W and 28W, I think). Sorry for not being clear.

Apparently these come with an Iris Plus 640 / Iris Plus 650.

The 15" has its dGPU, so the integrated graphics (HD) may not be so important at the moment.

If you're looking for the 15", KL won't bring much improvement except probably better battery life (and this could be more Apple then Intel).

And yes, the Iris Plus is just to better differentiate the Iris GPUs since most people didn't know the difference between 520 and 540/550.

Though with the lack of Iris Pro, I wonder how long will Intel keep it since I think only Apple uses it

Feels weird to see senthor, WRONG, ihatetoregister and everyone else here. Reminds me of the good ol' days of Waiting for Skylake. I'm just here reading this thread from my Skylake MBP. :p

The 15W KL U has slightly better perf (and obviously, a lot less power consumption) that Skylake in 28W in the current TB mbp 13" (including the top one you would get with the maxed out 13").
It would make sense to use those in the TB mbp, given the crappy battery life.
But yeah, they might go for the 28W KL in the 13" TB. I'm not sure what I'd prefer : The extra battery or the extra power. I guess it depends a bit how they bench.
