Now that the 2016 Models are out, will you buy a 2016 Model?

  • No, They increased the cost far to much. The Apple i once new loved appears to have disappeared.

Kabylake is hardly gonna lead to any improvements in terms of CPU power, the only visible clear improvements will be in the integrated graphics.

So for anyone buying macbook with dGPU, they should be buying Skylakes without doubt. For those without, we've got more of a question. Kabylake won't be much faster, but buying a laptop with a CPU that will be a generation behind is highly frustrating.

I am really angry at this. I wanted Kaby Lake desperately on my laptop. We don't buy Laptop every year. We use it for at least 5 years. Apple is playing with us. I think I will switch to a Kaby Lake PC this fall.

The 47W Iris Pro quad core processors are the bottom of Intel's totem pole. Because of this, the rMBPs are always going to get updated at the end of the current architecture or beginning of the next from now on. Also, going off Apple's previous release cycles, if there is a Late-2016 rMBP then Kaby Lake would be coming with a Mid-2017 release at the earliest.

One thing is want, another is what is possible.
it has been stated many times that the Kaby Lake coming out now is not the CPU "type" used in the MBP. if you just want Kaby Lake then you should get a laptop from any other supplier.

The reason why the others are able to make an early Kaby Lake is due to them having a dedicated graphic card. this is not the case for most of the apple MBP models.

You see, the issue is a little broader.

If Apple bumped their rMBP 15" specs to Broadwell in, say, mid-2015, then again bumped to Skylake in mid-2016, they would not have to launch right about anything this fall - they would simply wait until early 2017 and launch with Kaby Lakes then.

Now the problem is they didn't do any of this and people are becoming angry (and not only geeks like it was in March but also major news outlets pick up this theme) and Apple has to launch something.

This puts people in situation where they waited for up to 2 years and are still getting outdated product. When they could've bought 2 up-to-date rMBPs - one back then and one in next 6 months. Of course they will not be happy.

Lol what? So instead of getting a Macbook Pro with a high end Skylake chip that will outperform the Kaby Lake chips coming out, you'll get a PC with a low end Kaby Lake chip just because of the name "kaby Lake."

I don't know how people got the energy to wise these people up. It's been stated over and over again, and then two days later, another fella comes around stating the exact same thing again. I mean the Skylake thread would probably be less than 100 pages without the same statement over and over again ( ;) )

Just let them buy their Kaby Lake so they can gloat for having the (sh*tty) latest gen chip.

Apple are releasing their Products to late imo. Example, the MBP skylake has been out for almost 6 months. If they had updated the MBP this summer NO one would complain or even think about kaby lake.

The problem is that apple these last 2 years have been using "old Tech". This is how the marked Works, you do not get People to pay Premium price for old Tech. Why do you think apple have been releasing all these interviews latly? Why do you think everybody is talking about kaby lake? Its not about that they should use kaby lake or not. Its about apple being late in the game over and over again. And People are starting to think "does this old Tech value the Premium price"

The appropriate chip (for 15") was launched in april I think, that's not 6 months ago.

When the new MBP ships in october it will be over 6 months.

Still. Dont you see the frustrating part about this? Do you not agree that the problem is not about that they should use kaby lake or not. Its about apple being late in the game over and over again. The point is the right Skylake is OLD

Hey Dan.

I get where you're coming from, and understand your frustration. 2 things however:

1. the importance of the newest tech vs the "older" tech has been significantly diminished in the past ~5 years. The generation-on-generation in gains for CPUs are much less drastic than what they used to be. Combine this with intel's switch from tick-tock to process-architecture-optimization, and you'll realize that kaby lake (which is an optimization step in this process) is really scraping at the law of diminishing returns for the 14nm process.

2. everyone who's adopted the Skylake U series chips since they were launched in april has had issues - everyone is talking about buggy drivers and all sorts of issues. I don't claim to know what the hell is going on at apple, but i'm sure they would have been less than keen to release a brand new laptop with a failure-prone chip in it.

cheers.

Yet kabylake has hardware acceleration support for the next gen video formats, Skylake doesn't. I once owned a laptop on the wrong side of that line, never again.

Interesting, i didn't know about this. care to expand more about the potential advantages of this/what exactly it implies and how not having it would make life difficult for you?

If you're watching certain videos without hardware acc (in this instance probably HEVC 4K) the Skylake mac will use a lot of processing power to decode the video (and therefore a lot of battery consumption and heat). When watching the same video on a Kaby Lake mac, the processor will not use a lot of power meaning better battery life while watching the video and a cooler laptop. It probably won't matter for your videos now but maybe in the future when you watch a lot of 4K video.

While I agree in principle, Kaby Lake natively supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10gbps), along with a more powerful graphics acceleration for improved 3D performance and 4K video processing. Kaby Lake will also provides native HDCP 2.2 support and hardware acceleration for HEVC Main10/10-bit and VP9 10-bit video decoding.

Personally, I'll wait to upgrade.

After the 2016 model is finally released, I have a feeling the MBP won't be updated for a while. Sort of like the Mac Pro. They'll create a redesigned powerhouse with the latest ports and then let it be.

I think anyone banking on Apple jumping on top of the next processor and putting it into a MBP in a timely manner is a bit delusional.

I disagree. The tech and financial press has now picked up on Apple's lack of new products and their slipping market share. If this continues, they will lose the halo of superior products in this space and the ability to price at a premium.

Also once the redesign has been launched, it doesn't take much engineering to drop in a new processor and chip set.

agreed. they are late on the redesign, if its Sky Lake. They should have released it at WWDC, or shortly after.

Once the redesign is out the door, dropping a new processor in it is minimal engineering work, relative to the effort involved for the redesign.

I could easily see an October release with Skylake then a Feb release of Kabylake as a silent update.

I can't see them waitin 3 months just to do Kaby Lake. Intel would have to be ahead of schedule for that to happen which has never occurred.

Agreed. I this thread and the Skylake one is exactly outlining Apple's problem.
I would buy if I just knew that I do not have to live with the new model for 3 years.

Apple needs a roadmap. People just don't know what to wait for.
