Do you guys see the card reader coming back? With those memory upgrade prices apple charges it seems very convenient to upgrade your storage via SD-card.
No, Apple chose to remove it, and the outcry over that missing port has not been any more then when Apple removed the optical drive. Basically, its gone for good, and I recommend getting a USB card reader

I agree with approximately half of this article.

There are two factors limiting sales of Macs. 1) lack of updates; 2) prices. I love the idea of an ARM-powered Macbook at €800 and I would buy one if only out of sheer curiosity. But when a 3+ years old Mac Pro costs the same as it did in 2013, or much more if you're in Europe or, worse, UK, of course it's not going to sell. So it's not going to be updated. So it's not going to sell.

iMacs should NOT come with spinner drives in 2017. They just shouldn't. At all. If you see this gorgeous piece of technology, bring it home having spent €2129 on basic config of the 27" and discover it takes minutes to start it up and 30 seconds to open an app, you are not going to be tempted to get another one, especially as it's near impossible to upgrade. My husband needs a new iMac badly, but the config I'd be willing to allow him to buy (basic 27" 5K but with 256 GB SSD) costs €2369. We're not going to spend €2369 on a "new" iMac that hasn't been updated for 1.5 years. Therefore Apple is losing a sale. So they have less incentive to upgrade them (I don't imagine our one purchase would make a difference, of course, but I don't think I'm the only one). Repeat. If either the price of basic 27" retina iMac dropped significantly since its release, we'd have bought one by now. It didn't.

Macbook Pro 2016 is not a computer I would want to buy. Because of price and dongle life. (Yes, I know, it's the future, dongles aren't so bad, etc.) If the TB version started at €1449, I'd possibly be tempted. At €1999, with 8 GB RAM that can't be upgraded? No. Thanks to Brexit I got the 2015 rMBP for approx. €1200 including AppleCare. I love having the new and shiny. I'd like thinner and lighter, sure I would. But I don't love having the thinner, new and shiny enough to spend 2000+ euro on it. Perhaps 2nd or 3rd gen will resolve the sticky keys problem, improve battery and drop in price. Perhaps there will be a vast amount of cheap USB-C accessories available. I'll think about it then. I don't actually care much about Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Whisky Lake or Ribena Lake. I'd like a much faster GPU in the 13" model and a microSD slot, please – to me, needing an SD card reader when I didn't need one previously is a major downgrade and if a microSD card can fit in my phone, I am sure it can fit in a rMBP. Is it going to happen? Don't think so.

I'm still going to hang around this forum because I love my Macs and, well, as far as I am concerned there is no competition to Apple laptops. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. I'm just not buying it – for now.

Yup. Agreed. Spinning Drives in 2015 were ridiculous. If they don't fix it this year... then Idk.

For the MacBook Pro. It NEEDS HDMI 2.0 and an SD Card Slot.
I can see how people argue that all other ports will be replaced with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 in the future. It is not yet the case... okay... but that I don't mind. Call it Future-proofing if you will.

However. When 5 years ago... a LOT of cameras etc. still used CF cards... basically ALL consumer AND pro level cameras moved to SD cards exclusively. And there will NEVER be a camera... that uses USB-C as a storage medium. Aka one cannot replace the other.

Same goes for HDMI.
Yes... there are cables to go from USB-C to HDMI. But. TVs will NOT move to have USB-C ports. It's gonna be HDMI for the foreseeable future. The argument that many people bring, to replace your HDMI↔︎HDMI cable with HDMI↔︎USB-C is also not feasible.
Example 1) I have one spare HDMI cable coming from my TV or AV Receiver. Sometimes I wanna connect my MBP. Other times another device/machine. What should the plug be? USB-C or HDMI? Either way I'm cutting out a bunch of devices or need another dongle.

Example 2) Business. I go to a customer/client/board room/… the projector is on the ceiling. All I have is an HDMI cable sticking out somewhere to which I have to connect. I CANNOT replace that cable with USB-C... because it is simply not my call. Only way... bring another dongle.
This renders USB-C NOT a viable replacement for HDMI. Period.

I'm under the gun and trying to figure out if it's worth holding out and waiting, or just getting this model. Basically it's money burning a hole in my pocket, on top of needing a new MacBook. I currently have a 11-inch MacBook Air (256gb) 2014 that while is functional for light work such as typing, multitasking is a PITA. I use my laptop for the basic web browsing, researching, email, watching videos, wordpress, image editing, and while speed is okay on the 11"MBA, my productivity isn't great on such a small screen to the point I find myself typing up articles on my work desktop, emailing to myself and finishing the workload from the MBA.

That being said... I don't know if it's me being slightly impatient, simply having a case of wanting something new, or what but I'm torn on if I want to wait until possibly October for whatever "update" there is... or just going with what's available.

A friend said to get the 2015 edition to save money, but to be honest, why would I buy that model to hold me over for a year or two? Can someone help?

I don't know how people who use card readers and put adapters on the ends of their cables do it. I can hardly imagine the ordeal it must be. There are some intrepid souls out there!

Just bought the base 13in touchbar model and other than magsafe it has been a gem so far. The touchbar has a few cool things for me and the wife loves it. I'm ok with USB C only and appreciate the size/weight reductions but the battery life has been inconsistent.

Overall a so far worthy upgrade from 2013 13in and much easier to take with at total tax free price of $1575.

What colour options do you think we'll see in 2017. Good, Rose Gold or Black? Do you think we'll see other colour options or not?
Pretty sure I saw an article somewhere saying they tested gold, however it didn't look good given how large the MacBook Pros are

Seems the next gen mac will be water resistant even with the lid open. So the advantage of the new usb-c port and new trackpad along side with butterfly ketboard result in a water resistan macbook

I suspect Apple will update the MacBook Pro by June, then have another refresh by March 2018. Things are too out of sync.

I think they'll not for a number of reasons.
  1. The response by the media and consumers - it will imply that the the current model is inferior or something is wrong with it.
  2. Current customers will be angered because it will be like they spent 3k to be a beta tester.
  3. Kaby Lake is a minor update and nothing that will drastically improve the laptop
  4. What upside is there to releasing a new laptop so soon after the major update? Will it generate significant sales? What positives are there and do they outweigh the negatives?

Agree completely. People have told me to wait until the fall, but what happens when that comes and gos and there's nothing to be shown? Or worse... they do update slightly, I go to get it and it doesn't arrive until 2018? Or even worse than that.. it doesn't meet peoples expectations and I read 1000 "wait a few months, the update is coming out (again) posts?

The 2016 MacBook pro became available in October of 2016 (albeit, the non-touchbar model). By June 2017, it would have been 9 months since the last update. Obviously the retina MacBook will be getting Kabylake if things go according to plan. So what would be wrong if the MBP gets a spec update too? Two more generations of Intel CPUs will be launching between August and March of 2018. It would be in Apple's best interest to not be 3 generations behind.

Of course not.
:D
I miss the old days of the "Waiting for Skylake" thread.
The fun, the Serban, the drunkness, the live view of Apple WWDC...
Waiting for Kaby Lake is so much boring.
By the way, I'm in love with my Skylake 15", so I don't have much to complain.
