That's what I've got, and to be honest, I'm not feeling the need to replace this laptop. The benchmarks for 2017 MBPs aren't that much better. I'll bet 4 cores will be nice, but if Icelake is coming at the end of the year - I'll probably just wait till those come out.
I wouldn't get held up about Ice Lake, unless you're waiting on the improved GPU and LPDDR4 support. We're not likely to see those chips in Apple's products until WWDC next year, if at all since Intel has delayed Ice Lake so many times as it is. Who knows what's happening with Cannon Lake as well since that was supposed to be mobile focused (first 10nm chip, along with having LPDDR4 support). We're still waiting on a Coffee Lake-U CPU that's suitable for Apple with Iris graphics (which I imagine will be announced when Intel releases a refreshed 8th gen lineup with hardware fixes for meltdown/spectre).

I was hoping to see Ice Lake in the 2019 machines along with hopefully the keyboard reliability being amended - I'm not so sure on either count at this point. Cannon Lake has already been pushed back until late in this year, so either it will be like Broadwell and will only exist on the market for a few months with Ice Lake on it's tail, or Ice Lake won't be coming until the latter part of 2019 (presumably missing the MBP refresh timescale)

Some of the Vega M competitors from other vendors are coming out and are well spaced and decently priced - particularly so with educational discounts.

15” 4K displays, 16GB ram, TB3, i7-8705G with Vega M.

I’m extremely reluctant to go back to Windows (though might need to in future) but even I’m tempted by these. Might consider getting one and delaying an MBP purchase until next year or the year after...

I need a new desktop Mac as well though, so still gonna wait until WWDC before I make any decisions.

Not saying you specifically, but perhaps some people are too fixated on events like WWDC. Remember, In 2015 the iMac was updated in October (and May), in 2014 it was updated in October, in 2013 it was updated in September, and in 2012 it was updated it November.

It could very well be WWDC, but it could also be a few months later... or as early as April for that matter. Personally, if I were wanting a new machine but could wait perhaps half a year or so, I would just continue to wait until the release, whenever that might be, considering this will be a pretty major upgrade this year with hex-core models.

I’d really like to see apple offer 4K on the 15” MBPs displays so I can get 1920 x 1080 retina instead of 1440 x 900. I don’t see that happening at all this year though.

I was actually expecting to see the laptop line updated in March-April, while the desktops at WWDC.

But as we get closer, its looking less likely for March April considering the Education focused event they just had (that could have easily been part of a spring event) & the rumours being that some stuff from this years major releases was being delayed until next year — that is stage time they will probably fill with hardware announcements.

(That’s my reasoning anyway).

You can already get 1920x1200 scaled on the MacBook Pro, and by most accounts it looks fine. BTW, the default resolution of the 15" MBP is 1680x1050, despite that being a scaled resolution.

Ironically, 1440x900 default resolution is what the 13" MacBook Pro ships with, IMO it actually arguably looks better than the 1440x900 native resolution of the 13" Air. The default for the 12" MacBook is 1280x800 and it looks decent.

I already know this, but I don’t want it scaled, I want pixel-accurate for design related reasons. QHD could give us that.

+1 - a Thinkpad X1 Yoga / Surface Book 2 running Mac OS would be a perfect laptop for my needs.
But Apple have decreed no touchscreens or 2-in-1s because they say the experience is inferior. And not at all because they want to protect their iPad sales...

Meanwhile, I can perfectly well believe an Autumn release for the 2018 MBPs. Because I'm considering an upgrade, and whenever I do that the update is later than expected that year.

1920x1200 is honestly too small for the 15” comfortably. You can just about get away with it if you sit unusually close (more like how you’d be sitting over the 12 or 13 inch models) but at a normal distance it is uncomfortably small. Having an @2x 1680x1050 display (so physical resolution 3360x2100) would be a nice upgrade though as that is now the default resolution.

Apple's hardware is more laughable by the day...
Apple, there's always the Mac Mini

A notebook that can outperform a 10 core Mac Pro o_O
At 4:01 seriously WTF is exactly wrong with Apple  maybe they should stick to watchstraps and diverse into handbags. "Apple cant innovate anymore my ass", seemingly very much the case...

QHD is still 16:9 -- so 4x 1080 (not 1200), I'd gladly accept an @2x of 1680x1050 though, I just think that the 15" deserves more screen real estate.

EDIT: also thinking about it a bit more, if the made the display slightly smaller (go down from 15.4” to 15” while increasing resolution to 3360x2100, that would be a PPI of 264, which is that same as the iPad Pro’s... So hypothetically they could manufacture them using a similar fab process to what they use already...

I don’t see Apple abandoning 16:10, it’s become a bit of a signature of the line - I prefer it honestly for working on documents, it makes it easier when you can see a whole page without having to zoom right out. I definitely would like to see the return of @2x - it’s a noticeable difference if not absolutely the end of the world. 1680x1050 seems like the sweet spot for that size of screen (a 17” @2x 4K would be pretty mouth watering though! :D)

Personally, I think it's going to be WWDC because I think there won't be as many "wow" software announcements at WWDC this year. At least, that's my intuition given Apple's supposed renewed focus on software quality. Adding hardware announcements to WWDC will give them more to talk about.

I am predicting / hoping for 4K streaming on Macs from iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, etc. This would require an explanation of the supported Macs, which would be 7th generation (2017, excluding the Airs) or later.

you think 6 cores also? kinda just wanna get it and then forget about it so i can use my computer for the next 6-7 years.

i go the 2017 15" mbp because my 2011 air started to crap out on me. luckily, I have someone who I can sell my 2017 15" too (i'd rather sell to someone I know), but if no 6 core is released I probably won't upgrade

Hex core yes, but that’s nothing to do with 10.14.

True... but f* Adobe Premiere. It's seemingly not optimized like at all. And that Mac Pro is like 4.5 years old.

True but just wish Apple was more adventurous, right now Apple seems scared of it's own shadow, with just one direction. Maybe not exactly to my needs equally credit to the companies that are not afraid to experiment and produce interesting hardware.
