Butterfly switches are no more. "Too loud and too unreliable" New switches will use magnets with less moving parts.

Just returned my second Macbook 12" in for service because of the butterfly keyboard. Non-responding, loose and cranky keys. Have a 7 year old MacBook Air with no issues except for the lag which is caused by 2GB ram and a real old ultra voltage CPU. All the exterior mechanisms are tip top.

I really hope Apple reduces the bezels on all its products. Look at HPs new all in one:

View attachment 710065

But as many pointed out the next design update won't happen before 2020....Apple is too slow at the moment.

Generally, yes. But don't forget these new HP All-in-ones only use 1080p displays!!!

It would seem that you cannot have such a small bezel on 4k or 5k displays right now. If you look at other Dell and HP displays... they both have some thin bezel displays. All of which are 1080p max.
The ones at 4k and 5k all have huge bezels in comparison. So ya... I believe it can simply not be done right now.

Wait for iPhone 8. But Apple wants this to triggle down to iPad MacBooks and iMacs...

Oh ya... you're right... this one IS getting close.
But. It's also only 4k at 27" not 5k. And it doesn't have a webcam either.

There are three 5k monitors period. A dell, an HP, and the LG. hardly proof that it can't be done. Also the ThinkVision X1 has a camera. Aesthetics aside (it's a rather polarizing design that I love but others may hate), it even has USB-C. Why anyone would choose the LG 4k over this is beyond me.

From what I gather

MBP 2018:
Late 2018
Glowing Apple Logo's back. This time powered by a dedicated LED panel.
Coffee Lake
32GB options
Butterfly switches are no more. "Too loud and too unreliable" New switches will use magnets with less moving parts.
Keyboard will be E-ink. (2018 or 2019 models? Unclear)
Magsafe for 2019

If they remove the Butterfly Switches, I'll buy a machine without hesitation. I think they should re-instante the F-keys with the e-ink solution, that way we can get the fancy functionality minus scrubbing, but muscle memory on F-keys and the feed-back outweighs any scrubbing functionality imo!

There is actually one other 5k displays, this Philips one.

And I agree, this Webcam is horrible.

My realistic bet for a late 2018 - early 2019 13" MacBook Pro non-touchpad (the one I'm interested in):

- CPU Intel Ice Lake, at 10nm, four cores at 2,4GHz (15W TDP)
- 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR4 memory RAM (upgradeable up to 32 GB in 15" models)
- 256 GB of SSD storage (please Apple, make this the base config)
- A more powerful integrated Intel Iris Graphics, with 128MB eDRAM cache.
- 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, with the new USB 3.2 speeds (multi lane communication).
- Hopefully, same 55W/Hr battery, delivering up to 12 hours of battery life (4 hours of intensive tasks)

My wishes (not going to happen):

- 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD as the bare minimum specs.
- 32 GB of RAM as an option.
- Three Thunderbolt 3 on the left side, or two on the left and two on the right side.
- New ProMotion Retina Screen, with a 120Hz refresh rate.
- A new keyboard, hopefully one that works flawlessly and much more silently.

This thread is called "2018 MBP", does that mean we've lost all hope of a late fall update to Coffee Lake this year?

I'd guess we're more or less back at Apple's older release schedule at one refresh every ¾ of a year...
Without claiming to possess any actual knowledge on the matter... I think the next refresh will come in between late Feb and early April. The next one after that in October. Just a hunch.

There's a semi chance. I would put my bet on March, but there should be an event this coming October to detail the new iMac Pro and HomePod, no? Both are due in December. Do you guys think they'll get another announcement keynote as the early presentations were more intro? Perhaps a sneak peak for the Mac Pro?

There have been 'early' and 'late' models in Apples nomenclature regarding the MacBooks previously, but if I recall they removed this labelling recently?

I don't think you can say they removed the Early/Mid/Late naming convention, but the current models are named "2017" only.
Nothing to expect in 2017, unless they pull out of the hat some new low-end 15" model to replace the old Haswell model.

There is no standard release schedule, Apple has been pretty much following intel releases over the last years (out of the redesign periods in 2012/13 and in 2015/16, and issues intel encountered with the transition to 14 nm then early Skylake bugs), sometimes syncing 13" and 15" models with delays, sometimes not.
Watch intel release Coffee Lake chips fitting Apple's bill, and (unless they skip the generation) Apple will upgrade its Macbook Pro line in the following quarter, as it shouldn't be a major upgrade with heavy redesign.

I personally look forward to MPB Pro 15 inches without touchbar, I can somehow accept new too shallow keyboard, but touchbar is something I don't need at all.

I am just waiting for more battery / IGZO panels :(
Why did they lost a big selling point???
15 inches without touchbar and cheaper are welcome, but I can pay the 2900€ for an entry level if they put more battery. Otherwise I'll give a chace to windows.
Although I like the apple, I already had to switch to samsung s7 because of the battery

Welp, my 2017 13" w/TB comes today - I am very exicted to replace my 2008 AluminumBook even though it is still going (relatively) strong, just don't want to wait anymore. Should 2018 bring something spectacular maybe I'll have to do a quick turnaround on this machine.

Good luck to all on the wait! I'll still be following along...

Ehi what's up guys, how's everyone doing?
I was looking at those posts from Foxconninsider and it looks to me exactly like the return of The_Serban.
Anyway I'm still curious to see what the 2018 MBP will bring.
Have a nice wait everyone, and don't forget the booze.

In complete agreement. I'd even go one step further and say that I won't buy a new Macbook unless it has the traditional keyboard layout. I like my Escape and F-keys. But then again, I'm not your prototypical Macbook user in the sense that I run Windows 99% of the time. I only occasionally boot into macOS when doing light browsing, without a need to use the dGPU to conserve battery power. All of my work is done with Windows-only programs. Why then am I using a Mac? Quite simply, up until 2015, the MBPr 15 was the best Windows laptop around. And my 2013 MBPr 15 is still running more than adequately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Serban right about a few things? I agree that he seemed completely crazy at the time, but after he got banned and the event happened he seemed to be right on a decent portion of the information (or at least partially right).
