I think they will do a silent update mostly because of the keyboard issues. They won't release a new keyboard, probably an iterative fix. They will get negative press if they mention a fix and if they don't. The keyboard is THE MacBook Pro story now.

Better to silently release a new model with an iterative update to the keyboard that solves most of the problems. Swap old models as needed. Just my two cents.

I still believe that we will see updated MBP in WWDC.
Fall is for iPhones, and nothing else. I simply don't believe that they will release all of updates in the fall (iPhone, iMac, MBP, iPad).

But then again, maybe they will wait for Vega. If that is the case, I'm gonna skip MBP until next redesign. Gonna stick to Windows laptops until then :)

I don't know if its a concern or a hope with a silent update. I mean If silent then we will have no idea if the keyboard has been updated, so that would be a bummer. Sure tear downs and people's reviews will uncover this in the course of time but it will still be an unknown.

I would love to see something come out shortly, but if nothing does in June, I think we'll need to wait until the fall, one obvious downside is that Apple will miss out on the back to school market and it will be tough to justify almost 3k for a laptop that has fallen so far behind its competitors.

Here's hoping you're right. Although I don't have that much hope for it at the moment anymore. It's kind of bizarre seeing all possible signs point towards a WWDC announcement for the last couple weeks/months (the release of Intel's 8th gen and everything) and then getting indications that this might not be the case after all.

Anyway, I'm probably going to "go dark" now until Monday and simply try to watch the keynote without too much expectations... maybe we get decently surprised after all. I'll see you guys all on the other side, hopefully with some fresh new MacBook Pros with hexa core CPUs and a fixed keyboard, otherwise at least with some fresh new... eh... rumors about a fall release to keep us busy for the next 200 pages of this thread ;)

I don’t think it was this. Well not entirely at least.

The logos were lit by the LED backlights in the screen. This wasn’t possible with the newer thinner screens and there obviously isn’t enough room for a separate lighting comportment for just the logo - plus this would add additional power drain on the batteries.

Wasn't possible to cut an apple shaped hole in the back ??
Wasn't possible translated = cost too much.
=> cost-cutting

That's why I'm still expecting a hardware refresh of some kind. With the rumoured new Macbook Air, it would be a huge missed opportunity to re-introduce a modern, lower-cost laptop after the back to school season.

No. Because of how the thinner screens are made.

There is zero cost cutting in the current logo placement. It’s still carved into the lid. It still has a contrasting material insert. The only difference is the backlights from the newer screens are no longer exposed on the back, so there is no light source to light the logo.

Man I’m bummed about this latest rumour of no new hardware releases. Where has Apple gone? A year later and no new laptops? I hate to move back to widows 8 years later, but if nothing is released by fall unfortunately I’ll have to jump onboard Windows 10 :(

They have plenty of 13 and 15 inch MacBook pros at my military exchange store so I’m thinking that’s a bad sign that no new macs are coming. I did really like the 15 inch - I don’t need the power but the screen was so nice and it would make it easier for my daily word editing.

I am eyeing the Lenovo X1Carbon - Windows isn’t bad, but those updates....

God, I’m already picturing this WWDC keynote in my head.

First those numbers about how many people are on ios and mac os. Things are going great. We sold more phones and macs than ever before. But we are not gonna tell you anything about the ****** keyboards in the macbook pro because we dont really care. The iPads have changed the way we educate in schools. Kids love it. Here are some numbers. Blablabla. So much creativity. Don’t get me started about AR Kit. The 1 year anniversary. So much stuff made already with ARKit, its great. It has changed peoples lives. Then comes a video of ARKit.

Then ios:
First Apple Maps, which comes now with newer and better features nobody cares about and contains stuff Google Maps already has.

Then there is Siri, which is slightly smarter and is now able to respond to you in a slightly less ******** way but still quite ****. Oh yeah this ‘Siri’ update is coming this fall. When? Not telling you because we at apple don’t really know either, but we kinda had to release it due to amazon alexa and google ai.

Then animoji:
People love animoji. People made entire videoclips with them. Its great. Heres a compilation of animoji music videos flying around on the web. Oh yeah and were releasing 6 more skins this fall. You’ll love it.

Then there is mac os and specially for all you lovely developers out there.... there is Dark mode. Then Craig starts bragging out dark mode for 35 minutes with some lame programmer jokes to keep dem devs happy in the room.

Then icloud, more safe secure and more reliable than ever before. Finally announcing the first 50gb icloud storage for free.

Then one more thing.. people hoping its new laptop but nope..

It’s the iphone se2. Smaller, better, more fantastic than ever before. Then comes jony with some bragging about how difficult the design process was while making it. Only 900 dollars. Available today.

Then some random band comes on the stage. Happy wwddc week everyone!

← This! And I liked the post... not because I LIKE that this is gonna happen. But because it is true... and I like your sarcasm! It really is the only way to react to Apple nowadays. Man, I was ALWAYS SUPER psyched for the keynotes... but ALL keynotes of the last Idk... 2-3 years have been ultra lame. I'm just not excited anymore.

Among other things, it is supposed that at least apple is combined with the best design. So why on earth, they removed the glowing logo of the lid/screen?
Whatever the explanation is, they take back their best innovations(like magsafe).
Cost-cutting. Can’t see any other reason.
No, it isn't a cost cutting measure since there is no real cost, I don't know the costs but it's entirely possible that the reflective Apple logo is actually more expensive. It was part of their new design aesthetic with MacBooks to bring it in line with other Apple (i.e. iOS) products and I believe the newer displays do not easily allow for it due to their altered design in order to make them thinner. But is always something they could bring back, and in fact they have looked at doing that. However there are benefits to not having it.

Why would you assume that glowing logo is "best design"? Maybe they grew tired of it and wanted to go for something else? Or maybe the new display construction simply is not compatible with this kind of design? All we can do is guess, but I don't see any objective reason why the current logo is supposed to be "worse design" than the previous one...

Let's hope for the best.

These days, it is like every month is for iPhone.

The chance is small. There is no test scores of i5-8259u/i7-8559u etc showing on geekbench.

It cheapened the premium appearance, whereas they are going for a more refined approach.

I wasn’t paying attention in the previous years, but are geekbench scores frequent for MacBook pros? I recall iPhone geekbench scores popping up more so than MB/Pros.

Thing is, this doesn't even sound implausible. It's most probably exactly what will happen.

What are the chances of a 120 Hz ProMotion and/or 10-bit billion colour screen?
It’s extremely unusual to get a new screen in MacBooks between re-designs, Apple like to really milk the economy of scale dry for formfactor related components. Of course it might well be that no new MBPs will appear at WWDC because they are cutting this problematic design cycle short and accelerating a new formfactor to appear later in the year, in which case the 120Hz screen could be a flagship feature of the new model.
