Well, I’ve just ordered an iMac 5K, despite being here crossing my fingers for new MacBooks like most of you for the last few weeks. As mentioned earlier, I need a Mac next week as I’ve taken a few months out to work on a project. I was hoping for an updated MacBook but seeing as there aren’t any I decided on the iMac. I imagine I’ll sell it down the line, especially if there are new MacBooks, but there’s not really much I can do. I’m lucky enough to have saved ~10% with student discount so the ~300€ there will hopefully help offset what I’ll lose if I do sell it. From what I can see now, the 2017 iMacs are holding their value, which is reassuring.

This whole situation sucks. It’s bad enough paying (almost) full price for a year old computer but what makes it worse is that any time there could be new iMacs and MacBooks. It’s so frustrating but I’m a developer and I guess I need to see it as a tool, or so I’ve been told. :)

I can’t wait until October unfortunately.

But some of us are fairly committed to the Apple ecosystem, especially at the laptop level (i.e. still need things like Word/Excel/Adobe), but also use the Unix capabilities as well. If I could get a Apple MacBook Real Pro with the mobile xeons and 64 GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, I'd probably do it (I'd at least go to 32 and be comforted that I could upgrade to 64 if need be). I don't need all day battery life and an extra pound or two wouldn't bother me a bit.

Do you really need a mobile Xeon? The software you listed (word/excel/adobe) all work on a Windows machine - much in the same way as on a Mac.

If I could get a MBP with an Intel 8700, 32GB Ram, 8GB Radeon RX 580 and a 500GB flash drive, I’d be all good. I’d sell my 7820x PC tomorrow.

But this will never happen.

While I could get by on windows, it would be a bit clunkier with the way I like to do things through terminal (ssh to servers/clusters) and the need for some command-line software that's Linux/Unix only. The RAM need is mostly born out of handling big data matrices in R, not the terminal apps. So its kind of a weird combination. Basically the closer my laptop can get to being both a linux box for computation and the windows machine for finishing things (e.g. those word docs, data figures, etc) the easier my life is as I have to shuffle raw or analyzed data back and forth less frequently.

And I definitely here you on that magic machine, but I don't even need the GPU, though I could always use more fast disk space.

Have you checked out the Windows Subsystem for Linux?

Apple unfortunately doesn't produce a "Pro" notebook, nor likely to. If you need more computational performance and RAM you need to reconsider your OS of choice, as waiting for Apple to produce a higher level of notebook is an exercise in futility. Apple is now just about entertaining the masses, little else...

Q-6

So Intel's 9th gen 4.5W and 15W CPUs will launch probably some time around September, and we will get a chance to buy MacBook Pros with 8th gen chips at the end of October? I hate how Apple always seems to be a year late with their Macs recently.

That power saving tech could be interesting too, but I'm afraid that's 9th gen exclusive too.

As usual, just like when Skylake came out and tons of people opted not buying it due to the encoding included in Kaby Lake upcoming arch.

The delay on the MBP could be related to the keyboard problems they've been having - in other words, they've painted themselves into a corner by making it so thin, and are struggling to fix it.

[doublepost=1528240050][/doublepost]I was holding out for a new MBP since 2012. I knew about the keyboard problems with the 2016/2017 so I kept waiting. Rumors said new MBPs in Jan/Feb so I waited, and nothing happened. I got tired of waiting (6 years) so I ordered a refurbed 2015 despite WWDC being around the corner. I'm glad I didn't wait and just started working with the 2015. Even if something showed up at WWDC, I'd probably want to give it a year of user review to determine it's not a lemon like the 2016/2017.

I too thought about doing the iPad + iMac route, but I think I would always run into a situation where I would be on the go and needed that file, or had to use that program that's on my iMac. As advanced as the cloud syncing is these days, I still find that maintaining one computer is the best way to go.

Without a new Macbook or Macbook Pro, Apple will be hopelessly outclassed in the pre-school season, especially with this whole keyboard issue looking over Apple. It doesn't make any sense to not release a new Macbook, especially a cheaper one. It leads me to conclude that either they're doing something new and special, which doesn't seem likely, or they are experiencing some kind of production or supply problem.

I wonder what on earth Apple has been up to the last 5 years. Either they're incredibly mismanaged or like you say, been working on something big. I'm thinking they could have botched an ARM switch over, but who knows.

I miss the old SJ Apple - there was always something cool to buy. Now we just wait and wait.

Like they did with the "trash can" that can't be properly cooled with newer hardware.

It is a tool and hopefully you can develop something that makes the cost worthwhile.

For what it is worth the iMac is a great machine and you will like it a lot. There is a noticeable speed difference between the iMac and macbookpro still. Use it, develop something great and get rid if you need a laptop instead.

I’m in the exact same position. I sold my 27” late 2014 iMac... so I was stuck. I just ordered an refurb MBP 15” but am still deathly afraid of the new MacBook Pros coming out, but I just can’t wait especially not knowing if it would be October. I already wasted 2+ months being less productive waiting for the MBP. So I feel ya. A lot.

But that said I agree with everyone that the iMac 27” is great. So I don’t think you’ll regret it. I would get back the same if I didn’t need portability.

I hate that Apple has caught us in a rock and a hard place, and that we have no way of knowing, and have to pay for an “older” model. But this has worked for me in th past years when I was still an uninformed consumer and bought whatever was at the store without AppleCare rofl.

That’s what my SO was saying. Maybe this is a transition period for them pioneering something and we are all feeling the pain. But yknow, that may just be wishful thinking. I know in Singapore how many people complained of iPhones having batteries that weren’t detachable / removable and now almost all phones are this way. So who knows.

But ok we might be just thinking too positive.

Which makes me worry that a release in the next month or two would make it for the school season and therefore likely?

As mentioned before, Apple has a big Chinese market to back them. They only care about making devices that look good.

Desperately need a new Mac and:

I have decided I won't be posting again for quite a while. Sort of over it.
round and round in circles we go and here are my thoughts and opinions on Apple hardware.

If you need a MacOS laptop get the current model. Its fine.
If you need a workstation laptop, get a Dell / HP / Lenovo or whatever. Apple are a consumer business.
If you need the most current hardware & choice - get a PC.
If you want to game - get a PC or Console.

If you want to stay with the Apple ecosystem, suck it up or leave.

I have no concerns with buying any Apple product as they honour consumer guarantees, and are much easier to deal with than any other brand [in my experience].
Otherwise get Apple Care if you are scared of any issues happening. I have never bought it in 20 years and never had an issue that wasn't resolved without it.

There are capable of not refreshing mbp line for the whole 2018. I believe this.
This is their priority for business professionals on the move.

Somebody to open 'waiting for the 2019 mbp' topic please.

I'm with you. I'll happily pay more for good products, but I'm not paying 50% more for 50% less. I'm deallocating the $$'s I had set aside for a MBP now, and then we'll see what happens.

Apple deprecating two cross-platform API's also doesn't help, when cross-platform development is pretty much all I want a MBP for.
