how long? Then say that’s enough
The answer is always going to be "the next model will be better and faster", even if the latest one was unleashed yesterday.

I'm expecting a quiet spec update soon, but it's based on nothing else than surprising lack of availability of MBPs and rMBs in largest Dutch online stores. I'm not the often reliable and generally respected Ming Chi-Kuo :)

If Apple adds an i9 option, will you choose that or stick with i7?

In the past I have always gone for the top end processor, but honestly, the way the upgrade prices have gone I would most likely not go for top spec for my next one. I would get a 1TB drive as I'm not downgrading from that. I would get 32GB if avialable, if not 16GB, after that I'll think about CPU - but most likely I will get the lowest option that has hex cores

The 2017 model would surely last them a good three years through college.
Hey Man i always see your posting on these boards. Im curious, would you say your biggest enjoyment in life is talking and reading about items? Sort of like guys and sports who listen to a lot of sports talk radio and then debate which player is better for years on end? Debate and speculate about someone elses stuff and abilities. Then life ends. Being extremely honest with yourselves, how many people on here actually use these devices to accomplish something to aid human and self forward movement and how many of you just obsess over the devices as a form of cheap entertainment to keep the mind busy at something but not much self evolution?

I have this disturbing feeling that if everyone from these boards met in person, we would all be repulsed by who we are. Obsessing about tiny spec increases irrelevant to any accomplishment and overthinking irrelevant information.

I think this is the cold hard truth to some degree, but maybe not as harsh as you put it. I even feel myself wasting too much time reading this forum for clues to when the next MBP might be out. I justify it because my current laptop is almost dead, and I'm kinda desperate for a new laptop and told myself I'd get the next MBP the day it comes out.

But, like I said too, I think this is a little harsh. I, like many others reading and commenting, are probably doing so 5-10 minutes out of every day during a quick break or whatever. I spend the majority of my day either working or developing my business (biggest reason I'm trying to get the MBP ironically, lol).

TL;DR - You make a good point for a lot of people here, we obsess too much about this stuff. I know I could probably do without checking every day, sometimes more than once. Putting my mind toward better things for a few days between checks wouldn't be bad, especially since we're unlikely to see new mbp's till Fall.

Edit: On that note, I could probably buy a current 2017 and be happy and more productive and never visit this forum again for another 5+ years. My only problem is Apple's pricing; I refuse to spend $3k+ on something that will be replaced in a couple months.

So a few days ago, I convinced myself to wait for the new models. Then a day after that, I convinced myself that I am being an idiot and I need the power now, so I should just get one.

But the truth is, I was looking to lay down the money for the top spec 2018 model as soon as it came out.

However I put it, I feel uncomfortable spending money on something which is outdated, potentially flawed with all the keyboard issues and still the same price the day it came out.

Like the Welsh guy said, it’s doing my head in. And I’m spending too many unproductive minutes on this forum.

I think I’m going to take a call on this one. And just wait. It sucks, but I won’t be comfortable with a 2017 MBP purchase right now. Specially if I can’t rely on it, which is the biggest thing for me as I travel a lot and in fact, I’m traveling right now.

If it was rock solid, I’d probably just pick one up and then never come on here again. That’s the truth for many of us I think.

If Apple adds an i9 option, will you choose that or stick with i7?

Totally depends on Apple and if it can get the powertrain & cooling solution right. Some i9 8950HK notebooks are benchmarking lower than some with the i7 8750H, which makes the i9 an expensive option if your not getting the most out the CPU.

Smart money will be on waiting for the results and seeing if the i9 is significantly more performant versus the i7, as you can bet Apple is going to make a "meal of it" on the pricing...

Sadly, laptop hackintoshes are still mostly a no-go....

Working:
  • Graphics (Only Intel HD6300, Nvidia has to be disabled)
  • Backlight
  • Touchpad (Only basic gestures, no multitouch)
  • Audio (HDMI 3.1 has to be confirmed as i am not using this)
  • PowerManagement (to be confirmed fully)
  • NVMe SSD
Not Working:
  • Thunderbolt HotPlug

Also this made me laugh: "Wi-fi will never work without a dongle. You must buy an external USB wi-fi dongle."

I cant be assed to do Hackintoshes, laptop or otherwise.

It’s still difficult to say if Apple are just dragging their heels looking for a quick fix to their keyboard, have actually realised their folly, thrown in the towel on the keyboard altogether and are redesigning the computers around the magic keyboard mechanism, or as with other product lines they’re shifting to >12 month refresh cycles.

Obviously I have a job, or else I wouldn't be able to afford what you see in my signature - and it wasn't bought on credit either. There are other priorities in my life. Like right now, I'm saving really hard to build my first dream home. The forum is just a place for me to hang out, have fun, good discussion about what Apple might be working on next. To be honest with you, I'm not in the market for a new Mac, because what I have is getting the job done.

As for using these devices, I'm gonna be totally honest with you, the Mac is probably what I use the most to get work done since I provide remote technical support. The iPhone X, hardly do anything on it except browse social media, take the occasional photo - I think it was a waste of money. The iPad Pro is pretty much the same, but it along with the iPhone X were impulse buys.

For most users, a 3 year old Mac is more than enough.

I actually start believing (call it wishful thinking) that completely redesigned Macbook Pros are in the books.

It's also not completely unreasonable. Why?!

  • To just upgrade the CPU would've been easy enough. Increase default SSD size and call it a day (because that is what Apple usually does). They didn't do this, however.
  • iMac Pro. Realizing that Pros need machines too. With the backlash concerning the MBP and I've saying that they do indeed listen, I'm not willing to give up hope just yet.
  • The keyboard issues. And virtually everyone either hating it, or only being okay with it. Zero reliability. On top of that, everyone seems to love Magic Keyboard.
  • Stuff that tests and Q6 say... Apple (to be taken seriously) need to put He a Core CPUs... sadly the power draw is way too high. USB-C cannot provide enough power and I am pretty sure the current case cannot dissipate thr heat either.
  • Apple is completely unpredictable. Why not move to a 2 generation design cycle like iPhones used to be?! Especially in light of recent developments.

2 generation lifecycle for a laptop seems a bit too radical. The ROI for the R&D and associated costs is not worth it.

The iPhone market is very different and it to be fair, even then, redesigns don’t happen to often. We have had the same design iPhone for 5 iterations prior to iPhone X (iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 7s, 8). The iPhone X design too will probably stay the same after 2 years.

"Apple needs to publicly show their commitment to the full Macintosh hardware line and they need to do it now."

Nothing more to say here. I just read the article on the MacRumors homepage and I think it's spot on. It's extremely important for big Mac/Tech websites to keep writing articles like this. They are of such a big influence. It cannot be ignored by Apple anymore. Everybody I know is taking a close eye on the Buyers Guide on MacRumors and it's not looking good at all. The most worrisome is that there are no leaks about any spec-bump tests, for any Mac, at all up until this point.

Only by talking about these issues on a day-to-day basis we are able to change things. Yes, Apple follows it's own course, but when the majority of the people joins together to make a statement (look what happened to the whole 'Apple slowing iPhones down debate'), I think anything is possible. So we need to speak up about keyboard issues, we need to speak up and write about outdated Macs in 2018, we need to speak up about Apple not lowering their prices and losing focus on the Pro market. Only then we can push Apple a little bit for the better.

I'm also quite interested in what you guys think of that new Apple campaign that has been released. The 'Behind the Mac' campaign. Really weird to release a Mac campaign when you haven't been updating the Mac for more than a year now? Also quite worrying as a Mac campaign is supposed to be running for like a month or 2/3? Which means we can't expect anything new within these following months. Yikes, not good if that's the case. However something did make me laugh in the campaign. When you see people getting frustrated behind the 2016/2017 Macbook Pro. Wonder if they were frustrated cause their keyboard stopped working haha.

Been stating the same for some time, Apple needs to deliver and knock off with the pretense, it's simply insulting to it's professional users, at best disingenuous to it's regular customers...

Professional's, expensive weak hardware & software, add time into the mix, net result exodus, all the sickly sweet advertising wont fix that...

In my line it's called "firefighting" Apple has nothing to show, with the Mac becoming ever less relevant. Resorting to campaign's such as this to attempt to conceal Apple's inability to deliver, just another line of excuses...

Apple has become both cheap & greedy, worst of all has little regard for it's customers. This latest "Mac" campaign only adds insult to injury. Personally I've never seen so many speak of and actually leave the platform and who can blame them...

Apple will no doubt hold a fairly big Mac event at some point in the next six months and release updates across the entire line, possibly even previewing the new Mac Pro.

Everyone will applaud them because they “listened” and Macs are now state of the art again but a year later, we’ll be back in the sam situation with an aging lineup and “Apples abandoned the Mac” headlines.

Life, and technology news really does come around in circles.

I don’t think the advertising means we won’t see updates, not saying we will either, but the advertising rules nothing out.

It’s a brand led rather than specific product led campaign. It’s just higlighting the “power” of Mac overall featuring various hardware old and new.

It actually creates a good back drop to release multiple new “speed bump” Macs against. With those kinds of updates you generally have nothing major to market to your average consumer so this kind of campaign gets people thinking Mac and into stores and online.

Totally agree! Redesigned Macbook Pros are possibly on the way!
