MBP is a complete joke at this moment. Don't get me wrong, I like the design, I love that it doesn't sound like a jet engine... But for the last two weeks I've been using MBP 2017 for a iOS project, and some keys (7,8,9,0, .,;:) are simply stuck. Of course, some other people used this laptop before me. But it's just 3 months old!

And the lack of upgrades is alarming.. We aren't talking just about 5% speed bump this time around, we are talking about 2 more cores for 13" and 15" MBP!

I have already moved on, and I'm not looking back. Maybe in 2-3 years, but for now, I am avoiding MBP completely, even when they update it. And this is coming from a complete MacOS fanboy!

If the new 15” XPS makes an appearance in the UK before a new MacBook Pro then switching back to Windows will become extremely tempting. It’s improved a lot since I was stuck between choosing Vista or Mac OS.
To sum up just a few of my previous posts... while I think this is tempting... until I REALLY start thinking about it:

  • Task View is so so inferior to Mission Control (which is my primary way of switching Apps).
  • File Explorer without Tabs
  • No mounting of internal/external drives AND showing them on the desktop
  • No expanding folders in File Explorer (this is KILLER) to show the CONTENTS of 2 or more folders at the same time. With Windows I have to "double click to open a folder, 'wrong', go back, double click next folder…"
  • Double and Triple Click to highlight text is BROKEN in Windows. I have to use XPath expressions like a lot... like concat(substring(Class, 7,10)," - ",Name). With macOS I can double click a word like "substring" to change it. In Windows it selects EVERYTHING because Windows thinks everything is ONE word, when macOS correctly identifies word boundaries.
  • If I then want to navigate these expressions, I can go one character left and right with the cursor keys. Up arrow goes to the START of the line (macOS), on Windows... it goes one to the left instead, forcing you to use a mouse or the crappy trackpad.
  • Caps Lock doesn't write numbers, but only special characters
  • Windows Scaling that f*s up half of the applications
  • Applications that in some cases you cannot easily find (open with dialog doesn't show them so you have to navigate the File Explorer to find the actual .exe file, which is often buried deep within folders)
  • Applications that QUIT when you close the last window, forcing you to either leave a document open... or having to reload applications all the time
  • No App Bundles, endless Folders and Subfolders just to find an .exe file;
  • Registry
  • Anti-Virus
  • Annoying Windows update policy... with a security patch here, a system update there... practically every 5mins. With default settings that actually turn your computer OFF
  • Intrusive software. No I don't want Candy Crush in my Start Menu, thank you very much!
  • No REAL Full-screen mode for Apps
  • Arbitrary Keyboard Commands, some with Control, some with Alt, some with Windows-key, most of them making no sense: Cmd+Q(uit) vs. Alt-F4
  • No expanding folders (little triangle) in Explorer, you can only ever see the contents of ONE folder
  • no Quick-Look
  • no Spotlight
  • no Mail-Drop
  • no Air-Drop
  • no Airplay
  • no standard apps that come for free that are awesome and do what you need, like Preview! Try splitting or combining PDFs in Windows. Good luck!

The list goes on and on and on.

Coffee Lake CPUs performance seems to be highly dependent on the cooling capacity of the laptop it's in, even more than previous CPUs. Probably because of the large gap between the base frequency and turbo boost.

I hope that Apple is taking its time because, in addition to fixing the keyboard, they are redoing the cooling in the MBP. Some even suggested that the keyboard issues are caused by too much heat so this could help with the keyboard at the same time.

ALL of Mac lineup are actually outdated!
Mac mini - i5-4278U, small ram storage, slow hard drive
Macbook Air 11/13 - low resolution screen (1440х900, retro style), slow old processor (only 2 cores), integrated gpu is outdated, big screen bezels. 2017 Air has 2015 intel processor :D
Macbook pro 13 - outdated core i5 with 2 cores, max 16gb ram

Anyone of you guys who switched to Windows actually enjoy it? Like genuinely and won’t have the urge to switch back?

I mean I’ve spoken to pretty techy friends and they are on windows but reluctantly so. The specs are one thing but they are finding other problems with it.

Hey, I mean, I know it’s all “outdated” but the one I have really works for me so far. I still love it, surprisingly, even after hanging out here for months. And yes, I’m not 100% happy about many things Apple does but I’m using what I have and want since it practically runs my business.

I can't say I switched TO Windows, but I've used Windows my entire life. I will say two things:

1. It's not as bad as you think, and you can certainly get work done and be productive. Windows 10 is not that bad.

2. There's a reason I'm trying to switch to MBP. For the "heavier" things I do (photo editing, video editing, music creation) I find the Mac programs I've tried much more user friendly and easier to accomplish tasks (meaning I can be more productive).

When it comes to word processing and all of that 'normal' junk it's a wash. A windows computer has some amazing programs, even for the stuff I do. I used to build computers for gaming, but as the years went by, I found myself building hybrids for gaming + editing/production. I'm now at the point where I want to move ALL of my WORK onto Mac, and keep my gaming computer simply a gaming computer. My computer feels too splintered between duties and programs I use aren't nearly as fluid or bug-free (or user friendly/intuitive) as the Mac counterparts. Logic Pro, particularly, is a much better experience IMO than windows counterparts. It depends on what you like.

Just some food for thought.

True. Which is why Apple’s hardware situation is becoming more and more frustrating. All this adds up to very little when Apple is charging top tier prices for old technology, in some cases 3-5 years old.

I'm gonna be starting grad school soon and so I'm in the market for a new laptop. As a Mac user for the past decade getting a MacBook Pro seemed like a no-brainer until I started reading about all of the keyboard issues people have been having as well as the fact that Apple didn't update the lineup at WWDC like I had been expecting.

I'm still holding out hope that we see an update sometime in July but if we don't and frankly even if we do but it's just a spec update I don't know if I'll be willing to make the purchase. I've been looking at Dell's XPS lineup and they have some awesome stuff at a really good price which is making me actually consider buying a Windows machine again.

You didn't just exchange it?

I have A$4k saved up for a maxed out 13”. It’s difficult living off an iPhone alone. Hopefully there’ll be some rumours soon...

Perfect summation of the difficulty of being an Apple fan today by Dave 2D here (tl;dr - buy something else):

I agree with him. If I have to buy a laptop today, it's the Razer Blade. The money is in the bank with Apple's name on it... come on Cupertino...

I recently bought an Asus S7BS8750 (local derivative of the GL703GS) performance is astonishing for a notebook, very much agree with Dave 2D's comment here with Mac's being noticeably absent, nor deserving to be included...

Q-6

You didn't just exchange it?

It’s a company device, they will exchange it. Or not. Not my problem.

I just used external keyboard to finish the project. And my company banned further MBP purchases because of the keyboard issue a few months ago, so I’m really interested in finding out how we have a almost brand new MBP.

Maybe the unit you have is an exchange and that too has now broken?

My 2012 MBP gave up on me about 6 weeks ago. I've been trying to make things work on an old MBA we have but I finally got fed up with it. The old MBA just couldn't handle all the design software and the screen is not ideal for color.

So, I ordered a MBP on June 15. Upgraded a couple things on it. I get that it's not a pre-packaged laptop and I do need to wait a bit extra but the delivery estimate is between June 26-28. That sounds like a really long time. I remember my mother in law ordered a fully decked out one last fall and she received it within the same week.

It got me a bit hopeful that Apple is working on an update soon. I wouldn't mind if they sent an updated one of the update happened shortly after I received mine and I can exchange it. One can only hope.

Maybe Intel just cuts the production capacity of custom chips of verdion 2017. We have not seen any real macbook 2018 geekbench scores. Usually it should leak months ago.

Wow, you can order Core i9 version with 2TB SSD, 32GB RAM and 4K display for 3500 EUR from Dell.de store. That's like 1500 EUR less than the full spec MBP (with more than one year old processor and 16GB RAM). I know specs are not everything, but man... I wish those XPS computers have 16:10 display without that ugly bottom bezel.

Terrific models indeed.
I agree that specs is not everything, but you can't sell outdated models anyway...

My work-issued computer is Windows 10. I've used Windows in a corporate environment for the past couple decades.

Windows 10 is the best Windows yet. It's really not bad, and I'd say it's even "pretty" good given where Windows has been in the past.

Still, I prefer to stick to macOS on my personal computers. I simply like it better. I could get my personal/sideline stuff done in Windows, but it's easier and smoother within macOS.

Amen to that. It boggles my mind how much more robust, sophisticated and refined macOS is compared to Windows. The software is just so good that it sucks having to wait for the hardware to catch up.
