Its definitely a status symbol thing. My brother got the 2017 and its all he seems to complain about - not having the backlit logo.

I think the only times I have seen mine is when I walk from one room to another. The middle room has a mirror so I see it.

I think its more of a loss to Apple than the user to be honest. You couldn't buy advertising like that. There was just something about it that made a Mac stand out in a room to an almost drastic effect. I remember a student at a institution I was studying at using a first gen MBP in the cafeteria. It immediately caught my eye the minute I walked in.

As soon as they move to OLED screens, there will be no backlight to illuminate an Apple logo. Why you'd want an always-on light sucking up battery just for a logo at that point, I don't know.

Yes. My bad. 2017 Models.

I'm going to pay the price of buying 2017 model but I have no option. My laptop is totally screwed and badly needs a replacement.

Just get it. I did. I got the 15” 2.9.

Anyway, I was close to getting a Windows but glad I didn’t. For all the YouTube videos I watched and messages I read here I know that the MacBook pro is overpriced and old. But I got a good-ish deal and my friends’ windows laptops just got wiped clean with the new Windows 10 updates.

While I keep backups, this seems very annoying. So I’m glad I stuck to the MBP even if my heart bled a little!

Anyone else remember the bendgate of MBPs? It was the model with the DVD drive facing the front. That was pretty hilarious as I'm sure it was the 'titanium' model...

it was the titanium and I had it. It was vastly worse than any issue I have had on a macbookpro since..........

That was an expensive computer for me at the time.

Don't worry about it and don't regret it. Apple is like owning an Audi, sure you could buy a much faster Nissan, but the Audi looks and feels nicer. Enjoy it and don't look back.

Windows is not at all in my option. I left windows for good like 10-12 years back.

I am sure if I wait for 2018 model. It will have spec bump and may be 1 or 2 new features. But then a good config will cost even higher than the current models.

I am also thinking of getting MBP 15inch 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz, with 6MB shared L3 cache, 16GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, 256GB PCIe-based onboard SSD, Radeon Pro 555 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching Intel HD Graphics 630.

I think I'm set for another 5 years with this.

I've been following this thread for months, and I've just discovered something that has made the wait a lot more bearable.

I have a late 2013 15" rMBP. I've wanted to reinstall the OS for a long time, because I was getting unexplained high kernel_task CPU a lot (using 60% of the machine's capacity often), and my machine would often become unbearably slow.

Yesterday, however, I made an astonishing discovery. I installed an app that monitored my CPU frequency, and discovered that when I use multiple cores, the frequency is sometimes throttled down to 800Mhz!! (on the i7-4960HQ which has a base freq of 2.6Ghz and can boost to 3.8Ghz). I don't think this is a fan problem, because it's not in a dusty environment. The machine was also thoroughly serviced about 1.5yrs ago, so there is only 1.5 yrs of normal dust buildup vs the machine's age of nearly 5 years.

I then discovered that kernel_task is actually what OSX uses to throttle the CPU. So I don't have an OS problem, I have a heat dissipation problem.

How did I solve it? I just turned on the air conditioner. This suddenly makes my rMBP literally 3x faster, because it no longer throttles down to 800Mhz! I thought I had a Mac problem, but turns out I have a hot summer's day problem.

This experience makes me happy to wait longer for the 2018 MBP. There are reports that the Dell XPS i9 offering does not have an adequate cooling solution, and I wouldn't want Apple to rush out a similarly flawed product.

I'd much rather wait a bit longer for Apple to release an i9 laptop with well thought-out cooling. There is no point in having 6 cores if they're always being throttled. The Razer has a vapor chamber which seems to solve the problem, so maybe Apple are taking a little longer to introduce something similar.

I have late 2013 rmbp 15' too.
Of course, I do not have such a machine just for simple tasks.
So, if I have my browser with dozens of tabs, and word and photoshop etc simultaneously open, then you hear the air fans to go like an airplane taking off!

How many chances to we have for better cooling, when their steady concern is just to make it thinner and thinner?
I am not optimistic.

I’m on the 2.9 with 4GB graphics... 512GB SSD. Honestly I see what most ppl here are saying. Illustrator plus chrome is using about 12GB RAM, sometimes 8-13.

But I still enjoy working on my MBP 2017. I don’t mind the USB-C ports either, I just got uGreen and dodocool’s adapters. It doesn’t heat up as much anymore and also is fast for my work.

But I also hope the new ones have i9 and 32GB ram,one day. I hope my current will last me for the next 3 years. :)

Believe it or not the 2016-17 machines actually have better cooling than the 2012 to 2015 models - one thing they actually did do well!

This gives me hope - do you have any citations? A quick Google search turned up the opposite... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7853145 (528 people on that page said they had the same problem). I hope you're right though and that the cooling really is better.

I fail to see how ac is going to help unless you are in a 100F or higher location.

I know you say it was serviced a bit ago, but you might want to check it again. Dust is a problem, but old therma
l compound is a killer as well. Better to disassemble and resolve for good. My 2012’s was completely desiccated and temps were running high. Took it apart, cleaned, and it’s rock solid again.

Thoughts on this deal? https://www.ebay.com/itm/132664761365?rmvSB=true

15-inch Mid 2017 MBP: W/ TouchBar 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 16GB RAM 256GB SSD for $1899.

I posted before about how I needed a new laptop before August and it doesn't look like Apple's going to be updating their MBP lineup before then. I've been flirting between this and a new XPS 15 and while the latter is slightly cheaper and more powerful the difference isn't that big a deal for me considering my needs.

I guess what I need to know is how bad the keyboard issues really are? I've had my current desktop (a 2011 Imac) for 7 years now it hasn't given me any trouble, not even once. With the 2017 MBP am I constantly going to be on edge whenever dust is around the keyboard?

Also, does Apple's 1-year warranty apply to 3rd part sellers?

With regards to your question about the keyboard, how long is a piece of string? You will get differing accounts. It is up to you if you wish to accept the risk.

Also, just my opinion, I would make sure that the laptop is eligible for Apple Care. For such an expensive laptop, it would be silly not to purchase the 3 year coverage imo.

I'd even go as far as saying it's silly not to buy with AC *and* using a credit card that provides extended warranty coverage beyond AC+. Citi cards (at least some) will provide 24 months coverage beginning after the three years Apple/AC+ coverage, giving a total of five years coverage.

That's interesting. It's quite cool and dry today, about 66F. Yesterday it was about 80F but also quite humid. The throttling was happening yesterday but not today.

Do you happen to know: If I open up the laptop myself to clean out the dust and add new thermal compound, would Apple refuse to do their own (paid, not warranty) repair work on it in the future (such as battery replacement?). Or do they not care?

And if I do take it to them for a battery replacement, do you happen to know if it is possible to pay them to clean the fans and put new thermal compound on it for me?

Thanks!

When my partners MBA went in for a new logic board it got a full clean (including keyboard), so it's possible they do this as a courtesy. Wouldn't hurt asking.

According to some, we're going to see MBPs, iPhones, iPads, Watches, AirPower, and iMacs all in the fall. Apple seems to have moved toward an "all hardware at the end of year" policy. So September or a separate Mac event in October or a silent update around that time are all possible.
