I wonder how toasty the new MBP will get with the 6 cores. Dell already had issues with throttling in the 2017 model line, and its been amplified with Coffee Lake. These bad boys seem to run hotter

I'll definitely be interested in seeing some benchmarks on temps and clock rate in both single core and multicore prolonged usage. I wouldn't be surprised by, nor be particularly irritated by, the chip throttling when trying to run all 6 cores for prolonged stretches. However, I'd at least hope that top turbo rate can be maintained with only 1 core active. If we can really maintain 4.9GHz on the i9, I'd pull the trigger on that. If not, the 2.2/4.1 i7 is probably the way I'd go. I personally don't see much point in the 2.6/4.3 i7, unless I guess you're going for the 560x and 512GB anyway, in which case its only $100 difference, so meh.

I can't believe that Apple finally introduced some new MacBook Pros. I haven't had a chance to look at the specs yet, but for those who have, what's the best value of all of the models they released today?

Either sell a kidney on the blackmarket, or travel back in time to the 80's and buy Apple share then...

I'm torn between the 2.2/4.1 and the 2.6/4.3. I'm planning to upgrade to the 560x (as it's a cheap upgrade) & 512GB, and as you said the processor upgrade at that point is only another $100. However, if the 2.6/4.3 is significantly worse for thermals/fans, etc I'd rather just save the $100 and keep the processor at the lower specs.

Really looking forward to reviews that focus on thermals and noise. Hopefully that comes within the next week - I'm ready to pull the trigger otherwise.

I mean why not. Regardless of what ports the MBP itself has, having some additional ports on such a big weight that's standing on your desktop all day seems like a good idea. In fact all eGPU enclosures that I can think of (Akitio and the like) all have ports of some kind.
And don’t forget, this is the first egpu that supports a 5k display

And I think it's also the first eGPU that supports Apples Thunderbolt Display, which is great considering I'm still using one of these and have no plans of replacing it int eh next few years. Only remaining question is: Can it accelerate the internal display of a MBP?

Aaaaaaand it's ordered.

Somewhat hard to believe that after all this time speculating with you guys on the forums, it's finally there. And honestly better than expected. Gentlemen, it has been an honor.

True. The wait wasn't always great, but it was worth it. To be honest, I'm shocked we got it today, and I'm truly surprised that they actually changed anything besides the CPU. It was well worth it, and you guys made it somewhat bearable.

Overall, a very predictable upgrade that lets one confused about "why now, and not a month ago?". The 13" model has been boosted significantly (28W quad-core CPUs + larger battery), the 15" model expected Coffee Lake upgrades as well as an unexpected 4TB SSD option (AFAIK, without competition in this segment). Move to DDR4 surprised me, to be honest (at possible expense to battery life?). Lack of Vega is rather disappointing, but it seems that AMD is focusing on other things right now, for better or worse.

Also: Bluetooth 5.0! Thats a biggie. Are there even other laptops with BT5 support on the market right now?

So you were surprised by the very predictable update?

New MBPs will come when Mojave is ready, after the back to school deals, and after the iPhone release. Probably Oct 2018. Using tech that is almost a year old. I’m just keeping my 2017 13 and getting a pc to do the heavy lifting. Quite frankly, this is embarrassing Apple.
Ok, I was very wrong. Quite surprised that Apple did this with the school season coming up. For the stockholders they should have waited till after the back to school deal. Oh well, enjoy the new machines.

Then they might have something pretty cool up their sleeve for this Air replacement in the fall.

Woah. This is 99% the hardware update I was hoping for. My type of work could have used even more gpu oomph but I know that tends to be unlikely with Apple. Just a couple weeks wait to see if there are major issues otherwise I'll almost certainly be pulling the trigger on this. (Although I'm afraid to check prices...)

Super relieved Apple put forth a decent effort here.

Ok
Watching this thread forever

Wanting the 13 w/ quad core and 16gb
Hoping 16gb would be a base conf
NOT..ugh

13 BTO mid level, w the above looking at $1999!

Minus any edu discount

Heck, the base 15 w the hex is $2399
Tempting now
