Just to put this into perspective. Dell charge £99 extra for 32gb ram AND 1tb drive, for the same upgrade from apple its £720. Ouch

Like many, I've been following this thread (and its predecessor) for a long time, so today is a great day!

Question for the experts: for recording music and video editing, would the 2.6 with 16 GB of ram do the job? Or would I be better biting the bullet and getting the 32 GB out of the gate. Unfortunately max upgrades will be out of my price range.

I'm sure it goes without saying, but anyone getting their orders today please share any early benchmarks/impressions.

Also I was trying I read around a bit, but how do people expect the 560x to stack up again a PS4 (non-pro) gpu? I seemed to see that it's got an 8gb card vs the 4 shipping in the new mbp. We're getting more into PlayStation development at work, and it'd be nice if my machine was at least in the ballpark of graphics performance (although I'm not holding my breath)

I'm thinking of it myself, If opt for the FHD screen, the price difference is incredible. I can save at least 500 bucks (if not more), with the 4k version.
Then again, what's 500 bucks when you get more in the mail every month?

;-)

You should be roughly on par with the PS4 for raw graphics horsepower. Probably doesn't translate into same FPS under macOS, but you might be in the ballpark.

Where are the haters at? Or have they migrated to the 2019 thread already?
They're sharpening the arguments for 64G RAM and 8 cores.

Six cores is about the fastest you're going to get on a laptop for a while though, so you do have a good case for upgrading.

You know I'm not so sure on this. Rumour is AMD will push their desktop chips to 64 cores as soon as they can. Apparently they can do this easier than intel so its a way for them to stay ahead. If they push it in desktop class, mobile sure to follow.

Edit: sorry 32 cores, 64 threads: http://uk.pcmag.com/news/95215/new-amd-ryzen-threadripper-has-32-cores-64-threads

When do you guys think we'll start to see benchmarks, reviews and more importantly, teardowns from iFixit and the likes?

I'm curious to see how they actually did make the keyboard quieter, and if anything changed inside thermal and battery-wise.

The 32 core Threadripper is more than a rumour, it's been announced officially. They're doing a lot of things right currently. I don't think we'll be seeing Threadripper in laptops anytime soon though, and we're not even seeing many Ryzen laptops. We might see 8 cores in MBP class laptops around 2020 ish, but probably not a lot sooner.

Desktops will continue to be quite a bit faster than laptops for quite some time. It's mostly a power limit thing, which also makes it a heat dissipation thing. Hmm... now a 32-core TR system would probably go for a bit less than a 15" MBP.... tempting!

We saw benchmarks two weeks ago, didn't we?! ;-)

But seriously, first impression videos probably this weekend. Teardowns within a week or two maybe?

I think the reason we don't see many AMD laptops is because AMD have been targeting desktop first, but I expect that that will change! I agree by the way - they are doing alot right lately!

I hope you're right! I want to see Ryzen laptops too. There are some already, but the ones that exist aren't really what I want.

It does look like expanding core count might become a stand in for while they work out where to go after die shrinks stop at ~7nm...

TSMC are building a 3nm fab for 2022. I'm sure they're not the only ones. There will be limits, and core counts can't expand forever either, but we're not there yet.

I agree, i realised a while back that it doesn't matter what Apple do some people will still complain, people wanted 32GB Ram they now have it, people wanted more SSD storage they now have it, but some are STILL not happy instead they complain about the price. I think what some people forget is that these are Pro machine's they are not general consumer laptops, we are talking people who video edit, photography, coders, scientists, movie makers, hell even writers such as myself who also dabble in video editing (more of a hobby and to help a couple of friends out from time to time), they are not machines that the general consumer needs to buy in order to sit in Starbucks.

As far as i can see the 2018 MacBook Pro update is a great one, Quad Core for the 13" and 6 Core for the 15" along side the T2 chip, True Tone displays and better keyboards which are more quieter (and probably more reliable).

Apple are obviously listening to people and yet some are STILL not HAPPY

Well... I am unhappy about the price. Especially in Europe. And as I said before... I would also have liked some other things (HDMI, SD Card, 4k,…) But that I can live with basically everything the way it is... as long as there is at least 32GB RAM. We got that... so I'm basically fine. Now my company just has to greenlight the purchase :D Because I'm sure as hell not spending €4600 myself :D

The next updates what will they be? Guesswork... but most likely a minor speed increase aka + 100/200MHz on the CPU front. And a faster GPU. By then it HAS to be a Vega based card. Now is literally the time to buy. This is as big a performance upgrade as we'll be getting for the foreseeable future.
UNLESS... you have a 2015 or newer MBP and value GPU performance on the TOP of your list, and don't REALLY have to upgrade now. Then... you could also wait one more generation. Overall... again... I think now is the time to buy, though!

I mostly agree, although I'm waiting for deep-dive reviews as I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade.

I quite disappointed at the lack of mobile Vega, however. Apple has been putting essentially the same GPUs into the 15" MBP since 2016. The numbers on the GPU badge have changed, but the performance improvements have been marginal. If I knew for sure that Vega would get added in e.g. October of this year, waiting would be a no brainer for me. Most likely Vega won't come until next year, however, and that makes for a more difficult decision.

Also - it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Apple go back to a lower power DDR4 RAM variant next year or the year after, whenever Intel finally gets around to releasing suitable CPUs which support the new standard.

But there is a €700 dongle gpu for you now :)

My point is that some people have asked Apple for 32GB Ram, better processors and so on which Apple have listened and now given to everyone, but some people (I don’t mean everyone) are still complaining about Apple “not making pro machines”

I think credit should be given where credit is due here, Apple are obviously listening to us users, they haven’t forgotten about the Mac and this 2018 update is actually a great update, it’s cetainly more than I thought we would get (True Tone display, T2 chip were things I didn’t think were coming).

I just get the feeling that Apple could do every single thing that people want and some people would still complain about them, for a change let’s have some positive things to say or if people really are as unhappy as they say, they can vote with their wallets and buy a Windows machine instead.

Honestly, I am mostly happy with the updates in a technical sense, with one exception - I wanted a non-touchbar 15". Touchbar offers me nothing I need and I don't want to pay for it. But I could probably get over it physically if I was happy otherwise. Which brings me to my main complaint. Cost. In Europe they are just too expensive. Right now I can buy a Dell XPS 15" 32GB RAM 1TB SSD for €2,200. The Apple with similar spec is €4,099. Thats just ridiculous - its almost twice the price and the Dell even has a 4k screen!

@The Mercurian

Are those Dells using NVME SSD’s?
That could explain part of the big difference if not.

Their website says: 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Solid State Drive
I think that is NVME isn't it?

At the moment they have a 15% off sale. Normally that model would be €2,600 - which is still €1,499 cheaper. Enough to buy another Dell 13" !

Should be. The PCIe mention is the key I believe.
If it had only said m.2 it could be “normal” much slower ssd

Great prices!
