Hoping for these sweet chips and reliable keyboards on the 2018 MBP :)

According to Pcper's latest table data, Intel / AMD integrated processor 3DMark 11 P-mode graphics points can reach 14127 points, has exceeded 31% of the GTX 1050 Ti, while the GTX 1060 scores 16235 points, that is to say This core shows the performance of GTX 1060 87% of the performance. Running points in "Singing ashes" also reached 3300 points.

We're expecting an update this late in the year or has it been acknowledged that any hardware updates have been pushed towards spring/summer?

Don’t know if any of the specific SKUs that Apple use are available yet in 8th gen flavour, which would suggest spring at the earliest. The 15W parts are UHD graphics afaia, not iris, and no word at all on H series chips yet. Interestingly, the cannonlake Y series have been pushed right back into (possibly late) 2018 so the 12”MB might not be updated again until the end of next year.

Cheers, I appreciate the concise post! :)

I am speculating they will show up in next years MacBook Pro 15. In fact, it is said Apple is behind it.

We are likely to see that new Intel/AMD combo chip in next years 15 inch MacBook Pro, possibly an entry level model. Rumor is Apple is actually the one behind the collaboration because of Apples focus on thinness and miniaturization. Only Apple could make this happen. With Apple using discrete AMD graphics already it was more incentive to make this collaboration work. Not to mention, Intel wants to get serious about graphics again to compete with nVidia. So, this is the best way to get back in the game and buy time until they can come to market with something built by their recent hire from AMD.

So is everyone thinking that it’s worth waiting for the 2018 update now that we are 5 months since the last update. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that I really want to update at some point, however the usuage is mainly for editing in Final Cut and writing in Pages while also having a few tabs in safari open, that’s why I was thinking about the 13” MacBook 8GB Ram Touch Bar. However if Apple update early next year it might be worth waiting off.

I have a 13" MBP with touch bar and I love it. However, it's not my main video editing computer. I use it mainly for surfing the net and light photoshop work. If you do a lot of work in Final Cut, you might consider a refurb 2015 MBP with dGPU. The 13" MBP with touch bar is $1,799. For only $150 more you could buy a refurb 2015 MBP with 16 GB of ram, 512 MB of storage and an AMD M370X video card. This is the machine I use, and it flies through all my FCP X work. Of course, you have to watch the refurbished store daily, as they sell out quickly whenever they appear.

I actually have that too... being thrown back to the login window. I have the feeling it has nothing to do with your computer's hardware... but rather is a bug in High Sierra.

I'm still on Sierra (ironically enough because I prize stability). There are reports of this issue happening right when the 2012 retina MBP first launched, and in the reports I've read it was traced to the GPU (at first bad drivers which were patched, and then faulty GPUs.)

The advice I saw was to run the "extended" hardware test 2-3 times and see if any GPU issues are reported. I think I'll do that now.

will Face ID come to 2018 MacBook Pro?

Not a chance. Maybe in the next major MBP redesign, which won't be for at least 2-3 years.

Even if 8GB of RAM is enough for you today, I think you might regret not getting 16GB, given that you won't be able to upgrade RAM later.

If I do decide to upgrade this year I might go for the 15” it may be the better value for money, 16GB Ram and dedicated graphics also quad core. May be better for editing footage inside Final Cut X, Plus if I film using my iPhone in 4K further down the line at the least the MacBook Pro would be a little more future proof.

Choice 1: Wait
Choice 2: Refurb
Choice 3: Get something else.

Many people want Mac but will make do with Windows if they have to. I'm in that category myself. When hex-core chips are on the market I'll be upgrading. If Apple continue on their current track I won't be upgrading to another Mac.

I'm making do with ubuntu. It has improved by lightyears over the last 10 years. Somehow ubuntu drives a 4k display snappier than windows and osx are able.

Damn. Fo realz?
Now you scare me man... especially because there is NO MBP out there right now that's worth buying. As I'm not gonna move from a 16GB Quad Core machine... to another 16GB Quad Core...

I ran AHT now myself... came away with no issues found.

Guys, when do you think the updated models will be released? In the first three/four months of 2018, June at WWDC or late October 2018? I can't wait to finally make the switch lol

What I'd like to see is the following. But I admit it's rather unlikely.

- Macbook Pro 15 gets one of those Intel-AMD chips. Touchbar and formfactor stay more or less the same, but the model is rebranded as 'MacBook 15' with small cosmetic changes. The 12" MacBook gets a touchbar and slight updates to the look so that the two new MacBook models look similar.
- MacBook Pro 13" and the Airs get cancelled.
- Apple launches a new MacBook Pro line as part of their new Pro commitment. 32gb RAM, vega, xeon, whatever the spec may be. A 4k screen in 15" and 15" would be welcome, possibly with a standard HiDPI mode that is not exactly 2x. More ports, blade ssd, expandable memory, as in: pro!

What do you think?

I think my bank manager will not give me a mortgage big enough to buy such a beast as you suggest

So these are discrete chips for the 15"? Nothing similar expected for the smaller 13" I assume?

Uhm, no thanks? I'd rather keep the 13" in the lineup. I get the Airs, but why the 13"?
The 12" is fan-less and it seems there are possibilities for a quad-core in an upcoming 13".

EDIT: Or did you mean you're hoping for a 12" in MBP shape with a more powerful CPU (e.g. quad-core) and more ports? If so, I'm in.

What do you think?

I think this is more likely:
- 12” MB is able to be priced at less than $1000. MBA is mercifully killed.
- Touchbar components become cheaper - 13” MBP stays, but all new models have touch bar ( 2017 nTB stays around to fill price gap between MB and low end MBP?)
- 15” MBP gets this new Intel with AMD GPU.

For a slight bit of wishful thinking:
- Touch bar gains haptic feedback.
