I keep reading horror stories of 16/17 macbook pro keyboards. Should I let this deter me from buying a 17 macbook pro? I've been looking at refurbs more and more or even some good deals popping up. Just worry about the keyboard crapping out. If its just a handful of people im alright with that, but the post make it sound like 50% of keyboards break down.

I own the 2016 version and I love it, just get Apple Care with it (just in case) and you'll be fine. It's not that big of an issue as the forum is saying it is.

As an owner of a 2016 MBP with a flawed keyboard, I would recommend to opt for a 2017 model just in case, and second the idea of getting an extended warranty. The issue does exist, but there is no way to tell what the occurrence rate is, as any evidence in that sense is inevitably anecdotal and Apple will probably never let it out. The current MBPs are otherwise very good computers which I would recommend without hesitation.

TL;DR if you spot a great refurb deal on a 2017, get it with AC and enjoy your machine. If you don't need one immediately, though, keep in mind that significant CPU/GPU improvements are expected from the 2018 refresh, which depending on your usage might be worth the wait.

One of my coworkers brings his imac to and from work every day. They are portable enough to do this. As long as you don't need to fly it anywhere and you are not a person who goes to coffee shops to use a computer.

Honestly, I thought about something like this. But only to bring it Monday, and take home Friday. Since during the week I don't really need my computer at home.
BUT.
In my line of work I DO occasionally have to fly, or take the train etc.. Plus when I present at potential customers and clients I cannot really put the iMac on the desk there in the conference room... with a MBP everyone can still see one another... which is important. With an iMac... not so much.

Sadly I REALLY need a portable machine aka a MBP. My line of work requires me to take my computer with me... so ya... no iMac Pro for me :(

I have seen Windows and Linux laptops with 64 GB around the same price range as a maxed out Macbook Pro with only 16 GB so at least mankind can achieve good specs on a laptop using only 2017 or older technology. Hopefully Apple will match that in 2018. Probably the best way to reduce the cost of a MBP is to reduce the storage and GPU options at purchase. I hate that a maxed out MPB is over 4K.

It probably isn't 50%, but what percentage it is is an unknown. Certainly enough to pop up repeatedly on forums like this and for apple to post keyboard cleaning instructions on their website. The 2017 machines seem to be somewhat less prone, but that is 100% anecdotal. I guess the best advice would be if you don't do a huge amount of typing, and you really need the machine then go ahead without too much fretting over it, but just be aware it is something that can manifest and there isn't an absolute remedy for it (as yet). If you do a lot of typing, or your primary use of the machine will be typing, then at this juncture I really honestly would look at something else, either a previous gen refurb MacBook, or even something from the competition.

Seems you cant understand, same usage on both, for surfacebook 2 has 7-8hours gap from what microsoft says and apple has at max 1 hour
If you go heavy on the sb2 the battery is draining even when its charging , and without from 100 to 5% it takes 3hours and 20 min

BS
Ignorance

The current MacBooks don't last that long.

The surface book 2 is nowhere near as bad as you're claiming. It's more powerful, higher spec in every way, etc
It drains 1-2% an hour under heavy gaming so you can carry a lighter adapter..

Just stop buying computers

This means you have a lower Center of gravity, smaller frame body as in less flex in your spine/torso than someone much taller than you (e.g. me at 5’11). You should be able to carry a few pounds in your backpack especially if your young for a few hundred metres without a thought in your mind of pain/weight. That is unless you have an injury or predisposed issue with rroator cuffs, collarbone or seriously big breasted (unbalanced weight stress on lower back).

I'm thinking too many people are seriously out of shape and or just like to wine for any bit of work that involves the human body. All those artist drawings of alien sightings showing fail bodies is were we’ll all end up looking like because a half pound is too heavy in a knapsack. If you’re baked body no issues 2pounds is what you should be able to ‘notice’ not a half pound.

Now I feel like an idiot complaining about someone complaining about .5lbs. But I work in L2 I.T. Direct customer facing and I hear this same complaint every upgrade cycle for. Able bodied grown ups.

MacOS X does need a UI refresh even if just the theme. Used to love the .1-10 updates prior to mavericks.

I’m curious ... when Phil retires who’s next in line for hardware executive VP? We have so many Executive VP’s at Apple for Siri, Software, iPhone hardware, Design, iOS UI, etc but there is no distinct Mac Hardware VP just the cpu design and an executive who overlaps from iPhone iPad and Mac intros. Would love to see distinction in leadership for each. Maybe then we’d see better updates and more focus in the hardware feature implementation. Maybe MagSafe would not have left.

I'm quite fit.
I wish I didn't even have to carry a bag to work. Who does? It's annoying.

If I want to exercise I will do it when it's convenient for me.
Besides walking in my normal day why would you try to combine things like that?
Maybe we should all wear those ankle weights. No wait, that's stupid..

An out of the box thought.. this might provoke a lot of reaction, I hope!!
Just what if Apple ditch Intel in favour of AMD for cpus? After all they already use AMD graphics... I already have custom built many Ryzen and Threadripper systems for many people including myself, and with rumours of new Ryzen and Threadripper CPUS next year why not have more options for whatever MacBook line up there is available to include these as well... it could only be "good for business" surely !?! Any thoughts on this.. after all AMD are owned by Samsung anyway, just incase people forgot!! ..... I'd buy a MacBook Pro with a Threadripper 1950x(mobile version) in it over an inflated i9 every time!! Also on this topic why isn't there an i9 anyway ? that would tempt the "pros".... especially since the iMac Pro should be avoided until they bring out modified versions later on...

My new quote is "never buy version1 of of anything, it's buggy and we are essentially the beta testers for them!"

Intel is still king.
Check the details at AnandTech comparing them.
It would be a pretty big downgrade in general.

Yes. "Just" spend a couple hundred dollars more on an already overpriced laptop so you're covered when shoddy quality comes around to bite you.

lol try wearing 10lbs ankle-weights for 52kms walking after a 10 hour day ... then you'll back will hurt the next morning; that was fun stupid was not eating and resting longer than 6hrs sleep ;)

What is the probability that MacBook Pro 15" 2018 will have DDR4 32GB RAM, AMD Vega GPU and Coffee Lake Hexa Core CPU?
Coffee Lake and hexa-core designs are currently confirmed for desktop only, it remains to be seen if they will have 6 core H series chips as part of the KBL R mobile lineup (I’d say 50:50 at this point). They’ve gone to 4 core on some U series, so perhaps that’s a good sign we might see some H series with hexa-core designs.

Zero for all of these? I mean none of these will be there at 2018 version?

You wrote "and," meaning all three. Zero chance of that.

Slim to no chance any of the three will be introduced in the (expected) 2018 refresh.

Anandtech reported a few days ago on the leaked 8th Gen H-series chips. They will be "proper" Coffee Lake parts (not Kaby Lake R) and go up to 6/12 core/threads in a 45W TDP. So hexa-core 15" Macbook Pros are basically guaranteed as far as I'm concerned.

Coffee Lake doesn't support LPDDR4 and I doubt Apple would use regular DDR4. So that's out.

Mobile Vega? Anybody's guess at this point.

That’s good news, any further info on the chips with AMD iGPUs?

ok, troll detected, your opinion is 0("It drains 1-2% an hour under heavy gaming" WTF) ok i understand you dont have any of these computers, you dont need to be frustrated. I was speaking from objective point of view...stop using youtube or internet for your claims...From now on, its clear every post of yours is 0 credibility and has no interest for me. I was just helping others with info, that seems these days others figure those problems out

Yeah, it could, but I don't think Apple would go for it since the Core i7-8750H is already faster than the current setup, with a 6core/12 Thread. The thing is that the LPDDR3 is still a problem, with a max of 16 GB RAM within this generation. I would be more than happy with the current CPU power + double GPU and double the ram.

Hello guys, I'm looking to buy my first Macbook Pro 15" . All these 15 yrs i have been only using windows computers so far. This time i decided to jump into mac. I have been reading in this forums about the features to be added in the 2018 Macbook Pro Line up. This brings up a common question in this forum. Should I wait and buy the 2018 Macbook Pro or should I buy the current 2017 Macbook Pro? Is it worth to wait for the new features that might be available in the 2018 models ? Will there be any major refresh in the 2018 models ?

Pls share your inputs. Thanks for your time.

Wait.....always wait. And when in doubt, wait some more.:D

^I mean, if you have the option of buying a temporary laptop now to hold you over till next year, do that. Or just wait. Because next years MBP will be a significant processor upgrade though they'll be arriving either in March or June WWDC (I'm personally leaning towards June).

Thanks, that’s what I’m thinking. A 13” non-TB with 256 GB SSD will be enough for a while, especially compared to nothing but I really want the 15” screen and graphics card for occasional gaming. I saw a good price on a refurb model. Or I could pay off my credit card... Decisions.

This are the changes for the Macbook Pro 15" to recover the most desirable machine status.

KEY CHANGES

1) 32 GB RAM
2) Battery shape adapted to the shell (like the Macbook). For a bigger battery and longer hours of use.
3) VEGA Architecture Video Card

OTHER CHANGES
4) Super retina OLED screen (4K)
5) INTEL i7 "Cannon Lake" architecture Microprocessor
6) Thunderbolt 3 Magsafe cable (Like the Griffin cable) https://griffintechnology.com/us/breaksafe-magnetic-usb-c-power-cable

I've read dozens of horror stories about the new MBP since it's release in 2016, always resisting buying it until my girlfriend finally got me a 15" 2017 MBP as a present, putting my dilemma to rest. All I can say is don't listen to all the negativity in here. It's an incredible machine with incredible build quality. I'm coming from a 13" 2013 rMBP, an awesome machine for itself. I love the new keyboard, I love the new trackpad, the screen is gorgeous, it performs very well (at least with Final Cut Pro X) etc. The only thing that is a little bit meh is the battery life, nothing that's outstandingly bad, but nothing outstandingly good either. Also the Touch Bar bugs kinda ruin the experience of an otherwise quite useful tool. If it was for this forum I would never have bought a MBP ever again.

Just try it out in the store for yourself. If it feels good, go for it. To me it always felt good and I should've gone with my instincts in the first place.
