Why not ? FaceID would be great on a laptop. No notch and no more passwords.

Not in business, not at all. I have a Surface Book and when I use it on a project (heavy engineering), first thing I do is turn off Windows Hello, not because it's flawed or unreliable very much the opposite. In the professional environment I absolutely want to maintain full control, not have the display unlock inadvertently with a glance.

For the Mac and other notebooks biometric login is still better catered for by a fingerprint reader for many obvious reasons.

Cost. It will be an excuse to charge more.

Security. I'm one of those folks who puts tape over my laptop camera unless I'm making a skype call. You can be damn sure I don't want it able to recognise, track my eye gaze wo which adds I'm looking at etc.

Redundancy. I'm very happy to type in my password having done so for decades already.

Completely agree, the last thing I'd want is a professional/business machine that might unlock unintentionally. Things like these are a no-no in terms of security and privacy on a computer.

As you say, login absolutely needs to require a clear and 100% intentional gesture, be it typing a password or touching a fingerprint reader placed in an area where it can't reasonably be activated by mistake.

@Sterkenburg & @Queen6

I hate face ID on an iPhone, but would actually love it on a MBP.
And I do agree on the problem you two are addressing, but that one is easy solvable. Just make it that the Face ID turns on after you double press some key (spacebar, enter, whatever...). That way your mac wouldn't unlock automatically, but you could still unlock it with ease.

Face ID makes no sense on a mobile phone. But makes a lot of sense on a laptop :)

Hmm, interesting solution. But then wouldn't the "complexity" of the gesture be essentially equivalent to that of touching the fingerprint sensor? Tbh, I can hardly imagine access being quicker or more convenient than it is right now. Compared to all the problems the current MBP design suffers from, I actually find Touch ID to be one of the new features that work the best.

On the fact that it makes even less sense on a mobile phone, I agree. There are just so many instances where I want either a quick glance at the phone screen without unlocking it or, on the opposite, wish to unlock the phone without having to look at it directly...

@Sterkenburg

I agree with your post. Completely. But face id on an iPhone is a solution to a problem that never existed. It is inferior to touch id (imho of course), but that didn't stop apple from implementing it on their phone.

So I guess when we get next mbp redesign, I would expect face id to be there. But I would say it would be easier to use on mbp then touch id on mbp. You could make it that any button unlocks mbp, or even double clicking the touchpad. That is easier then finding and pressing touch id.

1st world problems, I know... :)

Just get the SSD model and you should be fine. I ran an Imac with 8 gb for a long time using kontakt instruments. The memory is not as important as the processor and hard drive speed for audio. I mean, I guess it wouldn't hurt to bump it up to 16 gigs though. But you will have a lot better time running audio tracks (and Kontakt) on the SSD.
Man I have the 5k imac almsot maxed out radeon pro 580 4.2ghz i7 16gb ram 3tb fusion but The scrolling is still a bit laggy which i guess is because of the Fusion druve do you think If i get an external usb3 ssd and Run copy the projects to the ssd and run them from there his would go away somehow im really disappointed my old 2014 rmbp runs Logic flawlessly while i cant even scroll properly on my imac and It runs almost everygame of 2016-or even some 2017 games nearly maxed out on bootcamp on 1440p so its really capable but The fusion drive

Whats your advice
Thanks a lot for the help it means a lot bro

I'm not a Logic user, so I'm not sure of the RAM requirements - how well does it run on the Macs you have? You can look into activity monitor to see how much RAM Logic uses in your workflow.

Just be aware that the CPU in any 13" MBP is quite a bit slower than the one in both your iMac and your 2014 15" MBP.

I wont call that a bit The performance is maybe half of my old rmbp i get almost 15k in multicore geekbench 4 if i remember correctly and 20k on my imac and these machines i guess Get 7-9K at max although the UI (scrolling etc.) is laggy on my imac Its due to fusion drive i guess

And im still hesitant to Get the 13 cause man the 13inch isnt a pro really its not even a laptop in my opinion a laptop has A gpu and this thing is kinda like a gpu-less-Mini-laptop with A cpu only good for Reading the news in safari This is Nearer to a 12onch macbook than the 15inches
Plus i dont know if theres gonna be a new model in the next 2 month maybe they announce something Along with the Imac pro?
I dont know man If its that Bad then i dont care im Gonna save more money wait a little longer and Not care what people at the university are gonna think of me bringing a 15inch To the class every single Day im a producer theyre About different stuff and i dont need respect from no one if its Not worth 17-1800usd then i aint getting one
[doublepost=1513097874][/doublepost](Forgot to say im a medical student so it makes no sense for me to bring A laptop Cause all we need is Some antomy applications power points videos and No one brings a laptop here and theres no need to bring a rmbp to a Medicine class )
But again I think the right thing is To spend my money on whats Right and Not what Looks better cause im a power user and Have a tight budget which means i wont be getting another mac In the next 5years but my needs wont change so its still hard for me To decide

I assume it could always be turned off for the few people who don't want to use it and you just type in your password as you always did. I think for most people it is a time saver. Just sit in front of the computer, hit a button and it is unlocked. Great if you ask me.

Face ID is a solution to a problem, it’s just not a problem most consumers think about. Apple wanted a bigger screen in a smaller body, so it ditched the bezel. If Touch ID can’t work under the screen, and samsung’s solution of placing it on the back is stupid, then Face ID solves a problem.

And why would I want to pay €€€ extra for s feature I'm never going to use ? They need to make it optional so that those who want can pay the premium and those who don't, don't.

As ever monopolies never serve the consumer, hence Apple's piss poor computing line. Apple's mantra is very simple "take it, or leave it'...

The same reason you pay for the touch bar or you leave it and shop elsewhere. Also no need to argue with me as I am not the decision maker. If I would be the lineup would be different. On the other hand I do not earn millions of dollars a year so what do I know..

Okay so it is real but I don’t see cannonlake being delayed anymore I guess we’ll see next month at ces.
I know Cannonlake has been pushed back 'into 2018' but it's still quite vague on when in 2018. Most things I have read made it sound like mid-late 2018 though so I'm not holding my breath on getting 10nm U and H series (Ice Lake?) chips in MacBooks until at least late 2019, if not 2020...

Really want Face ID too instead of Touch ID
I can do without it, I don't lock and unlock my computer enough for touch or face ID to be all that useful and the difference is that while Touch is now cheap enough it doesn't really matter, face ID is still recouping R&D costs and the array of cameras and sensors must be more expensive. Therefore I'd rather not be paying more than necessary for face ID if I'm honest... I want the price of MBPs to come down not go up even more...

Well, the SSD does make a huge difference (especially the PCIe), so if you are running a lot of Kontakt instances then the processor shouldn't be an issue with that speed of hard drive. I am really not very happy using a fusion drive. My 2012 Imac uses a 1tb and i am always getting cracks and hangs and all sorts of problems. You might want to wait for the 6 core macbook to come out, but the current one should work for you Otherwise, if you purchase through Apple, You have 2 weeks to try it.

Naw man My machine is pretty fast and As i guess i said I can run Moden 2016-2017 games like Cod WWII almost maxed out 1440p withh those outdated bootcamp drivers so its a pretty capable Machine and the fusion drive does a good job in booting up it boots Up the os x Almost as fast as my macbook pro And Doing everything is pretty fast this scrolling lag or hitting play after fully zooming into tracks Causes Lag in logic x and It must have to do something with the fusion drive and tthis is kinda a serious problem when sampling audio files Or trying to delete Parts of Audio file So its Gonna hurt if im mixing Or sampling My question is do you think if i buy a 256 Gb ssd this will some how go away? Ill be running the projects from the external ssd and The main Logic x appliction From the fusion drive

Lots of people complain about the 1TB fusion Since it doesnt have much ssd and Ive seen people who say Fusion doesnjust fine for them i havent even used my mahine for 2-3 month but The performance is impressive for me coming from a 2014 top of the line 15inch rmbp
