I don't want to buy the current MBP and just get pissed off with the keyboard. Whoever thought of this idea of installing a butterfly keyboard should be fired.
Generally yes, though I can imagine this one being fundamentally bullet proof, given the issues they've had with the current machines. I don't think they will want to be stuck with another temperamental design.I still would not buy the new update when it comes out until many moons later when the guinea pigs try it out first.
Sorry, has to be said (not just you with this) but lol at this whole 'It's Ive' or 'It's Cook' meme. He's the chief design officer, he's the one in charge of making it look pretty, not engineering the Keyboard. As far as how thin the machine is, that's likely a collective decision taken by the entire executive team for various reasons - Schiller will want to be able to market it as the thinnest full size workstation as well, for example. Designing these machines is ultimately down to more than one person, and I doubt Ive even has that much direct input anymore - mostly signing off on what his underlings bring to him now he's in an executive role that covers both the hardware of their entire product range and software for all of these devices. The failure of this design can't be fixed by firing one person, it's a collective failure of Apple's executive team as a whole. So we’re saying goodbye to Ive, are’t we?

Sure, though it's just something that seems to get tossed into every single discussion ever - it's either Cook's fault if it's a pricing/ sales issue or Ive's if it's a design issue... kinda the equivalent of 'why the chicken crossed the road' at this pointRelax, it was just a joke. I know there’s a lot of people who worker on this and they probably had to make it thinner.
I have my doubts there's anything that can be done for those already affected, though absolutely the repair programme should last the full 7 years until the machine is officially made obsolete for all hardware repairs. I'm also feeling like butterfly machines are going to take a while to phase out - there's still the freshly introduced Air, the MacBook and no rumours of a redesigned 14" pro a la the 16" so conceivably we will be getting another 13" touchbar iteration, just with a 32GB RAM optionIt's also something they need to address. I don't mean some weak apology either. I mean a fix that PROPERLY squelches the keyboard issues for all affected. Find the courage, step up to the plate, and end this debacle the right way. Damn it Apple. FIX this.
Definitely chased diminishing returns for the TB models, and I'm saying that as someone who does appreciate what a big difference the seemingly small change makesFor God's shake, no more thinness!
Even my mbp one decade ago, was not a bulky laptop at all! Perfect form factor, design and functionality and no problems!
They screw everything for this thinness obsession!
Enough!
Same here, I would love a 14" MBP
With WWDC 2.5 weeks away and there still being no leak or even any strong chatter, it's looking more like the new MBP (if there even is one) will drop in the fall rather than the summer.
Not as strictly, but MBPs tend to be refreshed in the summer since 2014. If this holds true, with this being a redesign which they will want to talk about at an event, WWDC does indeed become a strong possibility as there won't be another suitable event until October.I have a MBP 2013 which actually runs pretty well but it does need a replacement battery, I don't want to buy just yet as i see there's talk of a 16" Model which i'd definitely like to hold out for this but i'm unsure of Apples refresh schedule on their MBP's or if they even have one like they do the iPhone?

I second this. We're almost sure to see the new MacPro introduced like the iMac Pro was in 2017 (and the Mac Pro in 2013) in addition to the pro display. I've been saying they'll be a sort of "pro" section in the keynote where they'll preview the new Mac Pro and new display and update the iMac Pro and the MacBook Pro's. It's been a year since the last versions were released. I'm hoping they introduce the rumored 16 inch machine---I will buy it in a heartbeat.I think it's very likely we will see some kind of update during WWDC.
The new models are probably gonna have 9th gen CPUs with i9 8core being the top end of the upgrades. Also for the 15inch vega 16 hopefully will become the default GPU option and vega 20 being the upgrade. (or maybe vega 16X & 20X ? basically the same chips with minor speed increases)
Maybe they will do another minor iteration on the keyboard but I don't expect to see a new design. even though we've had some leaks regarding the 16inch model but I believe the newer chassis is reserved for next year as they are not known for rushing out products ahead of planned release.
I think we'll get hardware and my predictions are in a previous post. But maybe you're right and they let the design ride for another year---the Air has the same design and if they change the Pro, I think they'd have to change the Air and that machine was just released. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Here's my thinking for the top tier 2019 15" MBP. It's not a wish list. It's grounded on what I would be willing to bet money on. Let me know your thoughts...
Hopes
Dreams
- Silent upgrade the week leading up to WWDC (like the last round of updates this year)
- Lowest GPU gets cut (less expensive to upgrade to Vega 16 or Vega 20)
- For the love of god, CPU upgrade pricing comes down (particularly the 2TB and 4TB options) as this pricing is a year old now
Fears
- Display ribbon cable silently fixed (again)
- Butterfly keyboard has another slightly modded fix (like the key condoms in 2018)
Assumptions
- Silent upgrade one month after WWDC (like 2018)
- Silent upgrade in the fall (like 2016)
Questions
- They'll never lower the base model price but they will lower upgrade options (GPU, storage)
- Software-only announcements only at WWDC (except for possibly the Mac Pro)
- No next-gen redesign until 2020 (16" antiglare screen, scissor keyboard, optional emoji bar, improved thermals, Apple CPU, NVIDIA GPU)
- CPU upgrade will be minimally improved (hopefully runs cooler)
- 8 cores would not help with thermals unless they dropped the clock speed to 2Ghz which would suck for most 3D modeling software (still needs a fast single core for most operations)
- RAM options stay the same (possibly slightly faster)
Notes
- Is there a 6GB Vega GPU on the horizon?
- All things considered (for better and for worse), the current MBP is the most powerful and stable option of its generation (all things being relative)
- Hopefully, we'll get one more even better option next month
- There's a good possibility that v1 of the presumed 2020 redesign will probably have all new issues of it's own (like Gen 1 of anything in life)
- Given Apple's recent track record, there's something to be said for buying (or using) the last version of their hardware (or OS) while they beta test their thin/light/gimmicks on their customers
- Which is why so many of us are holding onto 2013/14/15 MBP's, iPhone 6/7/8's, High/Sierra... before upgrading
- Not to mention their ridiculous pricing in recent years (for something that will inevitably break)

I'd be a little careful with relying on the rumor mill---in 2017 I believe the rumors were really light on hardware and then BAM! The entire line was updated---even the crummy Air received a spec bump.

I dont think they need to update the air much next few years design wise. They wanted to keep it that iconic shape it will just get spec bumps and I see the pros getting refreshes and possibly new updated keyboards hopefully this year.I second this. I like the idea of a “Pro Segment” during the keynote. It would definitely make sense considering Apple did reveal the iMac Pro during WWDC. WWDC is a conference for developers (“Pro users”) and it makes perfect sense to show Pro focused hardware to this audience. An updated MacBook Pro, iMac Pro and Mac Pro would definitely show that Apple cares about the Pro market and if they also revealed some new Pro focused software, that would push things even further.
At this point, Apple is selling MacBook pros with a higher price and worse reliability. Even as an apple fan, I had a hard time recommending a MacBook Pro to a friend that was looking for a new laptop... Whether it’s a slight redesign or complete overhaul, Apple needs to get some new hardware out there ASAP!
Do you really think they’ll release a new laptop without addressing the keyboard? I kind of assume any new MacBook Pro will have a new keyboard.Yes it will be interesting if they do a pro segment, as it is sorely required.
I have no doubt at all the MBP will get an update. To what extent is the question, but certainly no re-design.
I am totally in the market for a laptop right now and am waiting to see what gets announced and compare. Currently Apple really need to pull something out the bag for me to continue to invest a significant amount into their hardware [I max out my machines]. A spec upgrade probably wont do it for me, but a 16” screen would![]()
