He just says yes to the question, also how long is soon? personally i'd like to see one at WWDC. Announcing the Mac Pro, Pro display and the new Macbook Pro with a new redesign, would be a great fit for WWDC, Pro machines for a Pro audience. However WWDC is mainly about software, altho they do sometimes announce hardware (see WWDC 2017).
That guy's great when it comes to sussing out future software---I don't know that he has any sources re: hardware.

My personal feeling is we're going to get new Pro focused hardware at WWDC to go along with Mac Pro preview/announcement; pro focus meaning new MacBook Pros.

Yep, I obviously can't tell you about how soon "soon" is in his eyes or how trustworthy or meaningful his claim is; but it's pretty certain that he does have a lot of insider information about the upcoming OS'es this year. It could be pure speculation on his part, or it could be a subtle way of nudging us in the right direction and sharing his insider knowledge with us without explicitly spelling out anything he maybe isn't supposed to.

Either way, I found it an interesting tidbit and very relevant to our speculation, so I thought I'd matter-of-factly point it out. What you think and make of it is up to you.

Personally, I think if we do indeed see the new MBPs at WWDC like you often said in your previous posts that you believe/hope we do, then I think it's very possible that the macOS 10.15 prototypes he or his sources have access to contains some hints towards this new hardware, as was often the case with OS betas in the past. Or maybe he has other sources that made claims in this regard. Personally I'm still more skeptical about a WWDC release for new MBPs than you, though I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see ultramobile ARM Macs be restricted to the Mac App Store only. Keep people from running Photoshop on them by making Photoshop unavailable on them...

This does imply a long-term future for Intel Macs (they aren't going to force all Macs to the App Store only).

It solves the binary problem - the App Store is smart enough to send the right binary to whatever's connected to it. Apple could very easily require everyone submitting to the Mac App Store to submit both Intel and ARM binaries (which has the added side effect that a lot of formerly Mac apps may start showing up on iPad as well).

Windows RT all over again? I doubt it.

It’s very interesting, another guy called “Shawn King” on Twitter has said “do you think there will be a new MacBook Pro soon? At least with a redesigned keyboard? Guaranteed. Look for it to be announced at WWDC”

Further inspection of his twitter account shows the guy to be “OG of Apple podcasting” host your Mac life and curator inside Apple. I’m not sure if he has inside knowledge or if he’s simply guessing.

It would be great tho to see a new MacBook Pro at WWDC.

Good news for everybody waiting: 9to5mac author Guilherme Rambo who has shared a lot of inside knowledge and leaks about watchOS 6, iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 over the last couple weeks claims he believes a new MacBook Pro will be coming soon and with a redesigned keyboard (source).

He better not be talking out of his ass. I NEED a new notebook by September and I really, really don’t want to settle for this gen MacBook Pro.

Someone else on one of the tech podcasts mentioned they had heard a new keyboard was coming very soon - I can't remember if it was Gruber or someone on ATP. It wasn't anything earth shattering in terms of news or detailed info, but I think that was the first time one of the well-known Apple bloggers/podcasters had said they'd heard something about a keyboard. Which then makes me more hopeful for a new MBP.

Thinking about it logically, it's highly unlikely that Apple will announce a new 16" MBP in June. If they do - they will destroy sales of the current MBP until the proposed release date. The only time they have 'pre-announced' products is when those products are new categories, or if those products replace long forgotten ones (i.e. mac pro) that are not going to be profitable in the near term.

edit: Just to clarify my post a bit - there could still be an announcement but it would be using this year's Intel CPU. And it would be remarkable if they do as it would be only 2.5 years since the last refresh..

It seems like you may have just jumped on the train.

Apples sales of their 2018 models are going the way of the iPhone. People know at this point how unbelievably unreliable they are. Customers are getting to the point where they are returning them before a problem even arises (myself included) to wait for a new machine. I think they need to bounce back from this with a new machine that is on par with similar windows laptops and that points to a 16". At the very least I see them fixing the keyboard and the thermals.

To make 2019 a good selling year I see them releasing the new MBP in Q2/early Q3 to make their earnings spike in spite of falling iPhone sales.

If it wasn't for the keyboard mess, then I could see them keeping the current design for a bit longer. Having to put the keyboard repair programme in place is obviously costing them serious (un-budgeted) money and will continue to do so for the next few years. Add-in the negative press, especially the recent piece(s) from the WSJ in particular as well as the constant stream of complaints online and on podcasts, I'm sure Apple want to move on from this asap.

As it is, I wouldn't be surprised to see a redesign based around the current Intel lineup.

It’s possible. What I find interesting is that Tim Cook has this to say not to long ago,

“But we believe that our Mac revenue would have been up compared to last year without those constraints, and don’t believe this challenge will have a significant impact on our Q3 results.

He’s basically saying that it was the Intel chips that had an impact on Mac sales, but doesn’t believe it will have that impact in the Q3 results. Is that a hint we might see the new MacBook Pro soon? I don’t know but i do think Apple acknowledge that they need to do something about the keyboard issues. Apple apologised about the issues people have been having with the third gen keyboard, they don’t normally apologise. My guess is like the Mac Pro, they know there are issues and rather than needing to have another round table discussion with the tech press, Apple plan on fixing the issues and will bring out a new MacBook Pro in the next few months.

I could be wrong but that is my thinking anyway :)

The current machines are not exactly slouches performance-wise. If there's a new design which improves the thermal performance, has a lovely new (larger) screen and a reliable keyboard, then there's a lot of reasons for them to want to move to that sooner rather than later.

Fingers crossed....

anyone got any predictions on price ?
Difficult to say with the circumstances... often they phase in redesigns from the top end, so could be a lot - like $3k+ if it's just one stock model slotted in above the 2019 15" touchbar. Maybe they will want to quickly move over if it's for the KB though, in which case I could see like for like replacement of the 2018s on price and specs.

I'm still hoping the rumours of a new 16" device are a replacement for the 15" and we'll get a MBP lineup which has the 14" and 16" as options.

Ideally there would be a non-TB option for both but I can't see it somehow.

Same here, I would love a 14" MBP

A 17" inevitably means a significantly larger footprint than the present 15" (which Jony Ive probably won't do). A 16" or possibly 16.5" is what would fit in a similar-sized enclosure to today's MBP by removing bezels.

Why always talk about 16 inch? Am I the only one that would love a 17 inch MacBook Pro again? I still use my mid-2010 all the time.

It’s being talked about because that’s what people like Ming Chi Kuo have said in their reports will happen. The 16” to 16.5” MacBook Pro is reported for this year. Probably due to the keyboard issue, Apple have decided to bring the new design forward a year (from 2020).
