They probably figured out a better way to track you.

High def cameras are so cheap now. What's to stop them capturing your car's tag# the moment you drive in. Then, as you walk across the parking lot they could capture your face or other biometrics. Now they can follow you around the store if they want and it doesn't matter how you pay - even if you use anonymous cash.
Yup that too and they were probably losing money 💵 from Refusing to accept Apple 🍎 Pay as customers would just easily go to Target 🎯 were they had it and better quality stuff at the same price. I know I did. It’s all about convenience and technology and low prices 😉

The other day, while paying with my Sam’s Club Mastercard by Synchrony at another retailer, they were having problems with the chip and I said “I wish they’d finally allow me to add it to Apple Pay” and went to add it to my wallet… to my surprise, it had me tap my card and it added it. It has been YEARS of it telling me my card issuer doesn’t support it. I don’t know if it’s iOS 27 or just Sam’s finally caving… either way, I’m happy I can use another card with Apple Pay.

Finally. I don't go there often, but this is great news. Sam's is updating too to Apple Pay, but their scan and go system is pretty good. Also, I find it funny that they are like we want to give customers choice and blah blah, but it took them years to figure that out??????

The MegaCorps just push out PR to support whatever they are currently doing.
Apple is no different in this regard.

It's not about customer choice beyond the ability to say that in a marketing message.

Walmart saw Target 🎯 implement Apple 🍎 Pay and EV Charging Stations at all locations and now they’re doing the same thing. They were losing money to Target 🎯

Too late Walmart! I already moved on!!

…oh you have free online grocery shopping and pickup. Oh okay, fine.

🤪

(I heard their in-store sales has really plummeted, maybe this will help a little.)

I know. Credit cards are so large and heavy. I can’t believe anyone carries one around anymore. If only pants had some kind of little compartment you could keep one in. Ah well.
You joke. But womens clothes routinely don't have pockets, and I don't always carry a wallet when I have no need to. Which works just fine when I go on a date night with the Mrs., or buy alcohol, but not for Walmart, as it turns out.

YES!!

Fantastic news, particularly as they continue rolling out their own EV stations!

Good luck on that. At least, all the Walmart EV chargers I've encountered have no payment terminal on them whatsoever, so it's not a case of simply turning on tap-to-pay functionality in an existing terminal. The chargers are 100% Walmart App-based for usage and payment (and it's Walmart Pay for payment, so you also need a Walmart account and stored credit card).

A pity really. There are something like 32 almost brand-new Walmart chargers near the major airport I regularly drive to and need a charge after the distance, so they would be incredibly convenient. Normally I avoid Walmart and do not shop there, but the chargers would've probably managed to get a little of my business. However, since they required the app, and a Walmart account, and a stored credit card, I will continue to charge elsewhere. They had the potential to draw me in, and they failed.

I will still keep an eye on this though, because I suppose it's POSSIBLE they'll retrofit payment terminals onto the EV chargers, since they've mentioned enabling tap-to-pay at their gas stations. I don't hold out much hope though, especially as I've watched other chains get in on the same game (Circle K is rolling out its own charging network too, and it's likewise 100% "must use app and create an account").

This is quickly starting to change around me (DC area). Not everywhere, to be clear, but it seems like they do that at least half the time now.

Yes, some do where I live, and some don't. But I think that most high end restaurants will not. It comes off as rather gauche. However, once the most high-end restaurants in Paris are doing it (and maybe they already are) all bets are off.

its about time!!! I was never about to sign up for their app

There are times I don't take my wallet with me and there have been times I passed by Walmart because of that.

You should always carry your wallet, for more than one reason. Unless you are going to carry a card slip with your ID and a credit/debit card or two, combined with some cash on you.

Your aren't the town I'm talking about.
I'm talking about tons of small towns that get all their local businesses, across many retail domains, totally nuked.

I frequent these places all the time in the rural PNW.

Also, as an aside, Walmart is partly "cheaper" because they barely pay their staff to the point that many are on food stamps, which Walmart is all too happy to accept as payment themselves. It's not a great company.

(Yes, I realize many of the mega companies are awful ... just talking about Walmart in particular here as we are in this thread)
The city I lived in Colorado's Main St businesses were decimated by Walmart walking in, and their location messed up city planning as well. And they bullied City Council to not allow Target into the city, which would have given some big box choice.

So I expect all those who said in these comments over the years that they were boycotting Walmart just because of no ApplePay, to put their money where their mouth is…

Oh, I never have shopped at Walmart regardless, unless it was literally my ONLY option for some reason or another.

Until digital drivers licenses become a standard everywhere, carrying something to hold your DL (and a card or two) seems necessary. A few years back I ditched the full sized thick back-pocket wallet for a small leather fold that holds just my DL and a couple CC's and some cash (if I have some). Super thin and light and fits in my front pocket.

Did Walmart just walk in or did your city council approve them first? The small town of Ocean Beach in San Diego had only one Starbucks which closed years ago because the community revolted. No big box stores either. Local businesses supported by the locals.
