the target market for this announcement is definitely those still holding out on the older intel iMacs, rather than the m1/m2 variants. for that its fair, for m1/2 people your time will be a year or two.

You know who's not in the MacRumor comments complaining about the iMac? The majority of people buying an iMac. This is more than enough for a family computer or small business and half the stuff people are complaining about only highlights further that you're not the demographic.

The Magic Keyboard without Touch ID -- offered on the low-end M4 iMac -- is The New 8GB™. The $80 upgrade to a Touch ID Magic keyboard is definitely worth it. If you recommend this new iMac to friends/family, make damn sure you emphasize the Touch ID upgrade.

Nice. Release a 27" version and one day I might be interested, when I no longer need the portability of a laptop. Talking of which, bring on the new new MacBook Pro already!
According to the video. The screen on the new iMac is enormous. :)

Love the way they imply that AI stuff is only possible with the blazing fast M4... when you can do it on the slightly less blazing fast M3, slightly less blazing fast M2, and slightly less blazing fast again M1

Can I use it as a display for my work computer laptop? That would be so nice because then I could use it for work as a display and as a full computer for my personal use.

Wow, I can’t see any changes from the outside. The new M4 gets compared to the M1 or ancient intel chips. That’s not a realistic comparison. I want a comparison to their old model.

And what’s all about the Apple Intelligence when it’s coming to some spare countries in Europe next year???

2,5 years for a chip swap and some color change? Really?

What’s with all these fruity colors? Why don’t they offer at least one sleek grey or black option with black borders.
I really don’t get it
There is a silver option that is pretty neutral.

Besides, don't you think Apple's marketing department has tested these colors on their customer base? They have more info than you or I have on their customer color preferences.

What is it with Mac employees trying to stand in the same pose as the head honcho?
Is that how you get noticed at apple?

It's the bow legs praying hands thing, right? - because Tim Cook does it - then I guess he expects his minions too.

Personally, I preferred the black turtleneck sweater jeans look over the shinny happy people semi-religious cult like look.

As for the iMac - meh.

Apple Intelligence? - typical Apple marketing, they can't be seen doing what everyone else is doing, they have to "own" it. Everyone else calls it Artificial Intelligence.

For me, it's all about the mac Mini - most bang for the buck and my M1 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

My wife loves the iMac - owned them since the first one.
She took one look at this new one and was like "is that it?"
"Apple intelligence, what am I going to use that for?"

I told her the processor was a lot faster, but she was like "meh, the M1 is plenty fast enough."
I totally agree with her on that.
Also, that the AI thing is just OS level - her M1 will get it, when she upgrades, whether she wants it or not.

However, I've never liked them - whilst I appreciate the simplicity, I have more than one computer - but I don't want more than one monitor.

mac Mini hooked up to a large high quality LG? - it's nice.

Why do they keep comparing the performance to m1 and old intel when their previous generation iMac is m2. This is so stuipid it makes no sense at all. It’s like nvidia comparing their new rtx 4000 series with the old GeForce gtx instead of the rtx 3000 series.

Billions in r&d and army of top engineers and all they did after 2 years is swap out the cpu and added some new color…oh and a slightly better front cam
I would imagine because most iMac users don't upgrade that often, so they are setting up comparisons for computers they are most likely upgrading from.

I need to replace my 2014 27" imac which is still going via OCLP. Tempted with one of these now the base is 16GB. But will see what the mini offers.

This format of releasing individual videos is waaay better than a 2 hour keynote.
The thing is that it’s not even a “2 hour keynote”. It’s no longer a keynote. It’s a video… that’s it. I wish they had gatherings and keynotes like they use to pre-COVID.

I’ll guess they tested it in Kindergarten 😎

Why? Obviously because that would let you get something "Pro" looking without paying the much higher Pro price.

-Mid-tier to budget (aka "SE") Mac, iPad and iPads are all the colorful, "rainbow Mac with white plastic" aesthetic to some extent.

It's a business model, not some random decision of some eccentric designer at Apple HQ:

Whether finishes or features, there's no mixing and matching on any level with Apple. Besides maybe internal storage, RAM, and a few others (all aggressively limited, of course. And, again, you're never getting the Pro RAM configurations in the non-Pro Macs. There's no winning with Apple.).

You pay up or you suck it up and settle for a compromised model. That's the Apple way.

I laughed at that one too. Having been on a 27" display since 2011 (and using multiple displays at work before that) I really don't think I could go back down to just 23.5"

Mini plus Studio Display would be nice, but ouch! the cost of that display is almost as high as my entire 27" iMac was. Sadly almost no 3rd party is making a decent high res, high dpi display so Apple is free to charge whatever the market will bear.

32GB is fine, but if they're not going to put out a 27" model, can't they at least offer an M4 Pro chip?

Fingers crossed part of the week of announcements is an iMac Pro, iMac Studio, whatever.
