watchOS 3: The BirchTree Review

There’s a lot to love about watchOS 3, and I really do think it is the best, most substantial update Apple is shipping this fall. iOS 10 is fantastic, tvOS is solid, and macOS is frankly pretty mild, but it is watchOS that stands high above all of those platforms and has improved immensely since just 12 months ago. This update does the impossible in making your old hardware feel brand new.
watchOS 3 has breathed new life into the original Apple Watch hardware, now endearingly referred to as “Series 0.” This is what I thought the second generation Apple Watch would feel like to use, and Apple has managed to get me that feeling in the same old hardware that’s been around for a year and a half.

I really wish you could see battery usage by app like you can on the iPhone. I had a similar problem after I updated a bunch of apps... battery was draining way faster than normal even when idle. It stopped after a few days (and a few more app updates). I had also tried restarting both iPhone and watch. I finally found a couple of stuck apps on the app screen that wouldn't install on the watch. I removed reinstalled the apps from the iPhone and things finally updated on the watch. I don't know for certain that these stuck apps were the problem, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just kept trying to install while the watch was idle.

Sean

are you running OS3 GM? the night after i installed it i had the exact same issue. it wouldnt charge past 80%. i did a reset and repair and now its fine.

I have to admit this is a gorgeous watch, and the idea of ceramic seems to be a great material choice.

Downloading now, two hours remain. Argh, my wifi sucks. :)

How big is this update as far as file size?

I see your reasoning, and okay, I get it. I could never wear a watch to bed though, I don't feel properly undressed lol. and they're too bulky anyway.

I have a couple of mechanical watches that I just can't give up so I wind up wearing the Apple Watch on the right wrist and one of the other two on the left wrist
I have a couple, too, although even if combined they can't reach the budget of your Sub (let alone the Daytona).

If one of my new job prospects pans out, though, I wouldn't be able to wear my AW to the office, so it'd be back to a regular watch for office wear. Maybe I could celebrate with a Datejust, too.

Wow! That's some collection you have there! Why wouldn't you be able to wear an Apple Watch? Corporate or governmental security concerns? I hope that doesn't turn into a trend.

Security concerns, yeah. I've got family members who work in a couple agencies here in DC, and there are pretty heavy restrictions on electronic gadgets. Bluetooth headphones are a no-go, too.

Watch OS 3 installed, watch rebooting now

EDIT: I'd forgotten watch install, like the iPhone and Mac and iPad, is a dual stage process.. so once more around the circle we go.

Minnie ain't speaking the time, enable tap to speak time in settings menu and increased the volume slider. Anyone have her working? :)

three.long.hours......

Ughhhhhhhhhh

Yes but you are three hours behind us here on the east coast so .. :)

Updated to watchOS 3 - but I'm unable to use scribble to reply.

I only see three bubbles below the messages: microphone, smileys and the new apps. Below the standard replies are listed.
Do you have to enable scribble to reply somewhere?

Edit: Never mind, English only at the moment. Great - but predicting the letters should be universal.

Sure, unless you mean the word "colors" instead of "colours". (which my American English iPhone wanted to autocorrect to "colors"... Ha!)

I am liking it but I am having massive delays when opening up the messages app. When scrolling through the emoji I am getting 20 second delays with the digital crown or swiping using the the finger.

Anyone else?

Good job since we pay these people's salary to answer such important and pressing questiions. Meanwhile the next person in the queue with a battery or reboot problem can just wait. Also could you call back and see what Tim had for breakfast this morning.

Really dude? Did you have some sort of problem getting through to tech support? LOL

Yes. we do pay their salaries to answer this and a lot of other questions. It's a legitimate question, and I had a delightful half hour conversation with the person that answered the phone about other Apple products and issues. And yes, sometimes you have to wait when you call Apple tech support. But it's seldom very long.

Get over yourself.

Yes, unfortunately!

I finally got the OS 3 installed on my series 0 Apple Watch. Everything is nice but the lag is pretty bad. Just doing the swipe for the watch faces took multiple attempts. I might clean my watch face if that is the issue. But the watch is more responsive and faster for bringing up menu's etc.
