I'd like to see a Nike+ Run Club app that actually works properly on the Nike+-branded Apple Watch. Mine has never worked as advertised, and Apple has refused to repair or replace the watch under my AppleCare warranty because it says that Nike+ is a third-party app. (Apple's advertising of the Nike version of the watch strongly suggests otherwise.)

The Worldwide Developers Conference is just about a week and a half away, and while we've heard some rumors on what we might see in iOS 12 and macOS 10.14, watchOS 5, the next-generation software update for the Apple Watch, remains a total mystery.

With no idea what to expect, we asked MacRumors readers what new features and tweaks they would most like to see in the watchOS 5 update.

watchos5-800x395.jpg

[*]Live step count complication - MacRumors reader Breezygirl would like to see Apple add a live step complication that lets you see how many steps you've completed at a glance, rather than just a complication that lets you know how close you've come to hitting your activity ring goal.
[*]Third-party watch faces - Third-party watch faces are highly desired by most Apple Watch owners on the forums, but so far, Apple has kept the Apple Watch locked down to control the design and interface of the device. As MacRumors reader Relentless Power suggests, a watch face store that includes a variety of watch faces from third-party developers and companies would be great.
[*]Activity app improvements - Right now, the Activity app requires you to hit your goals each and every day to keep a streak going, which can be difficult at times and allows for no rest. MacRumors reader SoYoung would like to be able to set rest days.
[*]Workout app improvements - In the same vein, MacRumors reader Rbart is hoping for a better workout app for running that's closer in design to Strava with additional statistics, a complete history, best performances, and more. Honglong1976, meanwhile, would like to see automatic activity detection to alleviate the need to start a workout.
[*]Podcasts for Apple Watch - Multiple MacRumors readers would like to see a dedicated Podcasts app on the Apple Watch for listening to podcasts on the wrist-worn device.
[*]Off-wrist Notifications indicator - MacRumors reader Lennyvalentin would like to see the Apple Watch better able to keep track of incoming notifications even when off the wrist, with those notifications still showing up but with an indication to note that they were received while the Apple Watch was idle.
[*]Proximity notifications - There's no way to set the Apple Watch to ping when it goes out of range of the iPhone, a feature MacRumors reader Justiny would like to see as a way to keep track of the iPhone and get a reminder if it's left behind.
[*]Sleep tracking - This one is probably a long shot given that Apple suggests people charge their Apple Watches at night, but MacRumors readers would like to see native sleep tracking capabilities.
[*]Always-on display - Given battery constraints, Apple has never implemented an always-on display for the Apple Watch, which is another highly desired feature. The Apple Watch display comes on when the wrist is raised, but it would be nice to have always-on access to the time as is possible with a traditional watch.
[*]Better health analysis and suggestions - MacRumors reader Bluecoast would like to see Apple better take advantage of the health information it collects with the watch to add recommendations and coaching for those who are aiming to meet health goals, as well as deeper analysis.

Is there something you're hoping to see in watchOS 5 that didn't make it on our list? Make sure to let us know in the comments.

lots of these aren't really great ideas.

.

They are! But something tells me we will get the following

1) expanded health kit capabilities for new watch in sept

2) some thing regarding Siri, probably search results to Apple approved content making it even more useless

3) watch bands - laugh away but this is a priority for Apple

4)Animoji- seriously - they will add something like wave ur hand trackin

5) and Tim will say how they are the most innovative company ever.

Good night sweet

I want the remote app to work properly: currently it's missing the TV and Siri buttons! And you can't adjust the volume with the crown like you'd do with the music app.

You can’t adjust the volume in the iOS app either!
[doublepost=1527293274][/doublepost]Allow users to select which photos can be used in the Siri watchface. Currently my watch shows pictures I rather not have on my watch. I should be able to select which photo album will be used

So many good suggestions here; Drumcat, Dimka, more. In the service of voting, I may repeat, as well as offer one or two no one has mentioned.

1) support for wearing AW on the *inside* of the wrist; I was *shocked* to learn it is effectively unusable to wear AW like this. The motion activation functions exactly opposite, staying on when you want it off; off when you want it on. For people in certain work industries, having the watch face on the inside of the wrist not only protects the watch face from impact damage and scratches, but allows for reading more easily while holding tools, handles, handlebars, etc.

2) always on during workouts or defined activities; when your hands are full you can’t always easily tap the face or fling your wrist as designed.

3) please, for the love of mike, seconds display on more digital faces; I shouldn’t have to open a timer/stopwatch or squint at an analog face when I’m busy with other things.

4) always above date on analog; because, of course it should. Skeuomorphic design doesn’t have to suck because the real world does.

5) if I can have (effectively, with Date) five complications on Simple Analog, why on earth does “Utility” Analog restrict me to three? Isn’t that kinda bassackwards?

6) more information density when I want it, where I want it. When I’m in a casual mood, I like an analog face with more, and more subtle, useful complications; when I’m working or working out, I want a digital face where *I* decide where and how large the clock is, and which complications are fine as subtle, and which need to give more information without a tap. Screw third party watch faces! Give me an app to make my own ideal layout. (We’ll never get that, and third party is also unlikely;  and Ive can’t stand the idea someone will immediately uglify the product).

7) I’m definitely interested in a Steps ring, and I’d trade it for a Stand ring if the argument is about space. I’m on my feet 16+ hours a day; I don’t need to track the one ring I’ll always, always close.

8) more accurate/frequent heart rate; I’d also like to dump my Polar (but understand this will likely only come with hardware/better battery).

9) I’m not clear if this is a watchOS problem, or a developer issue; but too many apps display (often very) old data, with no clear message it is still updating. I get irritated and feel like an idiot staring at certain apps (Weatherbug and Wunderground, I’m looking at you) waiting to be certain I’ve got fresh data. Either give me a spinning gear (ala Sleep++), or tag the data *accurately* as n minutes old (a la Cardiogram).

10) it kills me Siri can’t work while Now Playing is open. I pause/play frequently, and Now Playing launches anew every time; I appreciate auto-NP enough to not want it disabled, but I need Siri to set my timers without first pressing the Crown. Pretty sure this is just a big fat bug.

11) a Siri that doesn’t fail to connect several times a week, requiring I restart *both* Watch and iPhone. Feck you, Siri.

12) a Now Playing setting that doesn’t take over another open app; if it’s just the watch face, fine, go ahead and take the focus, NP; but if I’ve got another app open, I don’t want NP taking over, and forcing many clicks and scrolls to get that app back, especially, again, when my hands are already very busy.

13). an Apps Grid and List views, and Dock that doesn’t SUCK. I don’t have time to play magnetic row/column shifting games to arrange the app Grid how I want it, and it’s utterly stupid that alphabetical is the only option for List view; and that the Dock is artificially limited to ten apps. If the App List can hold an infinite number, there is zero logic or reason to limit the Dock to ten. I’d also like the option to make the Dock appear as a list (rather than previews). I want an App List accessible with one user-ordered set from the Crown, and another app set available from the Button.

The ability to do manual laps while running. Without the ability to do manual laps no serious runner can use it.

Question for AW users: Can it do background app audio? For example, I'd like to listen to locally stored music or podcasts in the background, while having a jogging app in the foreground giving me audio prompts. (To Airpods, if that matters.)

I asked this in the Apple Watch forum this morning, and a different website too, and also asked a Podcast app creator, but so far no answers yet from anyone.
Yes you can. I do it with AirPods all the time - AW series 0

lots of these aren't really great ideas.

Activity app improvements
Watch is about tracking stuff. If you already know your rest day, there's no point in setting it. Just don't work out that way.

Off-wrist Notifications indicator
That's what your phone is for.

Proximity notifications
I think a lot of people occasionally step away from their phone a lot which could be annoying if everyone turned it on.

Sleep tracking
Super obvious since Apple bought that smart sleeping company.

Always-on display
Current and past watches will never have this. Future hardware will probably have it.

Do not call all these bad ideas...

Definitely need activity app improvements. While I don’t like his/her answer, I have a daily 1000 calorie goal. Some days in a month are difficult to hit that... but usually I go way over that. so it would be cool if you could do a make-up day the next day if you double your move goal (once a month) or something similar. More often than not, I actually miss one stand hour when I forget to put my watch on until half way through the day. That’s a bummer feeling when you put your watch on halfway through the day the first week of the month and know you are screwed at getting a perfect month.

Agree with the off wrist comment.

Proximity notifications would be a life changer. My job requires me to have my phone with me and I’m in and out of a truck. If my watch could remind me I left it hooked up to CarPlay, it would change my life. By not having to constantly run back to the truck. Not to mention the worry about losing the phone. Obviously, you should be able to disable this.

Apple BUYING a sleep tracking company (in theory to include with AW) proves that sleep tracking is a good idea...

Ridiculous comment about always on display... “current and past watches don’t have this. Future watches will?” Still means it will be in watch OS5... perhaps not in previous series, but it’s still a software feature that folks would like to have integrated in new versions. Features don’t always get included in older devices. New iOS’s don’t all go back to the original iPhone... but people still want to have new features.

Support for drill sets in swimming (ie. when you are not moving your arms). Would be able to replace my Garmin Fenix 3 for pools swims with that as I love the auto set calculation.
Doesn’t it already do this? I look at the auto sets all the time after a swim

There’s an app called Juice that I believe will do what you are wanting.

Better support for triathlons in the activity app. It’s almost impossible to use for a triathlon. Adding a new activity to a workout is too cumbersome in the middle of a race, and I don’t think you can add on to a swim at all. Plus there is no way to click that you are in the transitions. While I’m on it, I’d like to be able to click one of the side buttons to activate the next activity because sweaty fingers make it difficult to get the screen to work.

In addition to an Apple Watch face store which I and others have been proposing since day one, I'd also like to see chips built-into the watch bands that allow the mere attachment of the band to pair with the watch and select a complimentary watch face, either by default or previously selected.

I have less of a problem with not allowing users to create their own watch faces, but third parties should be able to, as long as they are sold through Apple's store so they can be controlled and curated.

How about getting rid of the word "Complication"?

Apple used to pride itself on making difficult easy. Complicated runs counter that aim.

Surely there is a better descriptive word than that?

Love my Watch 3 way more than I thought I would. Bought as a gizmo, now very happy I bought it.

Had to buy a Sleep app which seems a bit silly not to have been included. The NFS card payment works a treat. The alarm setting is so much quicker and easier than a phone. (I do have my home screen tailored for functions I use: top left alarms, top right time, middle Day, Date Month, bottom left battery, bottom middle Activity rings, bottom right Messages), This layout gives me quick access to the things I use a lot.

The ability to cancel an auto-login in to your mac. Currently it tells me if someone has logged into my computer with my watch (when apple watch is used to log in)... but there should be a button there to cancel it (relock the computer.. require a password to log back in). Just because I'm physically close to my mac, doesn't mean I'm the person opening it.

It already lasts 2.5 days on a series 3 so ... check?

You get over two days? Good for you; not sure how much you do past check the time. If I’m lucky, I’ve got 85-90% to start at 6am after tracking sleep; I absolutely must recharge to 100% by around 10-11pm, latest (I usually charge during dinner around 9).

Between calls, messages, notifications, alarms, Siri, workouts, health apps, timers, etc., I feel pretty damn lucky I approach the advertised 18 hours on my Series 3 (non-LTE).
