I returned my watch several weeks ago because I was hoping for a hardware update. So there's none? Now have to drive my butt back to the apple store to pick up the same exact watch. LOL

Hardware and software are split.
WWDC is software focused.

the watch updates were good compared to the other stuff.
wtf on the imsgs apps!!

Yep, we should have known we were in trouble when they spent the first 30 minutes talking about WatchOS 3! I was a bit disappointed in most of the rest of the thing and kind of pissed that I spent 2 hours of my day watching it in hindsight. Kind of like what happens when someone on a diet realizes they just ate a half gallon of ice cream without realizing it! I was hoping for a little more enhancement to CarPlay... but all we got was a flipping updated Apple Maps app. If you buy all the Apple platforms then you get some love at each keynote... this time it was us Watch owners that did!

I'm left wondering how Tim can make the "we want to change the world" proclamation and most of their effort seems to have gone into cute enhancements to messaging that will serve to occupy people's time as they try to out-cute each other. Which brings me back to Minny Mouse... really????????

Two questions from me:
1. Since the rumor is the second gen watch hardware will be out this fall, do you think WatchOS 3 will run that smoothly on first gen hardware?

2. If it does run that smooth on first gen hardware, will I have to carry my charger with me at all times? The battery is going to get pounded from the new features I would think.

1. Yes

2. No

1. Yes

2. No

So you believe they have figured out a way to get that much better battery life while adding all the new features? It would appear to run 10 times faster plus adds better background refresh on the dock apps and you don't think the battery (that is already dead by days end now) will not be affected? Doesn't add up to me, but what do I know? ☺️

Ok, if Apple truly figured out how to squeeze that big of a performance improvement out of existing hardware without hurting battery life, color me amazed (and anxious). I do believe they have pulled it off, but I'm also quite surprised.

We'll likely get AW2 anyway by the time wOS 3 is released in the fall.

I think the wheelchair activities app is fantastic. I never considered that the 'stand up' may possibly upset an apple watch owner in a wheel chair.
Good on you apple very impressed.
The updates seem to have speeded things up (understatement) I wonder why they couldn't do this on update 2.

All of the improvements are nice, but the MOST important detail, is apps loading 7 times faster. If true, HUGE win.

The battery may be somewhat affected, but it's normal for me (and many others here) to have 30% to 40% battery left at the end of an 18 hour day. I'd gladly milk that down to 10% for improved performance and background refreshes.

It might be possible to toggle background refresh for individual apps the way you can with iOS, and the ability to view which apps are using your battery (and what percentage of your battery) for background refreshes. It could also be that the only apps background refreshing are the ones you have in the dock, glance or complication. I'm sure there will be some degree of control.

  • Performance tweaks
  • New Dock interface replaces honeycomb home screen (honeycomb home page gone? favorites button functionality gone? launches dock now)
  • New watch faces (Minnie Mouse, activity watch face, simple watch face, added complication to photo watch face). NO custom watch faces. (Let the complaints begin!)
  • Scribble input method added. (lets you type out information by drawing letters)
  • New 911 emergency feature introduced on Watch (sends location to where you are after phone call)
  • New activity Share feature. share your activity rings with friends/family. (yes, I know other devices/app already do this)
  • New Breathe app (deep breathing exercise app)
Edit: Done.

I thought I heard him say they were adding the ability to add more complications to the faces, and the weather on the photo watch face was just one example.

All in all, I'm disappointed by them still not opening things up for 3rd party watch faces, but with everything else they've added, it's undoubtedly a fantastic update. For me, the watch faces is the only other thing missing.

With a performance improvement like that coming out, I doubt there is going to be a watch 2 in the fall.

Won't stop the rumor mill from pumping stuff out though.

Yes good point, the update was that good it was as if they were launching 2nd Gen apple watch today.

You sure about the complication?

So how to you access the 'honeycomb' apps now if 'honeycomb' is dropped? or is it how they showed it in the video? cant quite work that out. Is it just a longer list on the 'New Dock interface' that OP mentions.
