The only real negative I have is that the humble volume knob is now an artifact. steering wheel controls encourage good driver behaviour but god damn it, when Metallicas Master of Puppets comes on it just calls for the almost-visceral action of cranking the volume knob to 11. buttons just dont cut it.
Car Play works just fine with a volume knob (my Sony head unit has one).

That screenshot is a perfect example of why Apple Maps is better than Waze or Google Maps.

Both upcoming turns are covered by street name labels. One of the labels is cropped so you can't even read the full name, and the second turn is way over at the edge of the screen at risk of being off the screen entirely if Cornwall Rd was slightly longer.

In Apple Maps the labels would be on the screen, they wouldn't be covering your route, and the map would be rotated to make sure as much of the upcoming route is visible as possible — especially in cases like this where you're doing two right turns back to back.
Yeah the much nicer interface is why I switched over completely since the new maps rolled out. Also voice navigation is a lot easier to follow. Instead of “turn right in 500ft” it’s “turn right at the next stop sign”.

So what’s the benefit of using dashboard so you can see the song your playing even tho you can hear it, it’s a downgrade doesn’t show you the proper map
Why all the hate for a feature you’re not forced to use? I really don’t understand this theme on MR, “I don’t see the use in feature X so it shouldn’t exist”, all this feature does is give wave the same viewing options as apple maps. feel free to select the viewing option you like best and let others do the same.

I believe the Street labels are dynamic and move around as screen space permits. a static image doesnt really show that off.

Apple Maps is still quite bad at Metro Sydney for navigation so I prefer to use google or Waze (waze mostly for the police/accident warnings on long drives). Apple Maps cant match google for POI in my area (struggles to find lots of destinations such as restaurants or venues by name, relies on using the address) and, even when attempting to search a certain friends home address using the full address (street number, name, suburb) it refuses to find his house and instead defers to his local movie theatre (in a different street, in a different suburb)

Apple maps is probably fine in a lot of US places.

I know, but all the current model head units have ditched it in the name of bigger displays. its just a damn shame (and really, volume should be a mouse-wheel style control on the steering, or a joystick, not buttons.)

I really need a new car. I want carplay for sure next time
you can buy a head unit and retrofit it your current vehicle. There is wiring kits that make it as plug and play as possible.

the only thing that usually isnt included on those harnesses is the vehicle speed sensor, the parking brake sensor and the reverse gear sensor. The VSS and the park brake (E-brake) sensor are only required if you intend to use the video playback functionality of the head unit. the reverse gear sensor is only required if you want to use a rear-vision camera. that said, to wire the park brake sensor and the rear-camera sensor, you just need to have them wired to the power wire of their respective input. the rear camera you can wire in to the signal wire of the camera. I did not use the VSS or park brake sensor as I dont want to watch videos in the car. Some people might! i imagine it would be nice if you are a #vanlife person.

steering wheel controls can also be difficult to integrate but you can buy a maestro SW and program your steering controls as desired, then wire that in to the cars steering control signal wire, and then plug in to the head unit.

if you can turn a screw driver and follow instructions on how to pull your dash apart to upgrade a head unit, you can install this head unit.

Someone plz tell me how this is better like I said it doesn’t show you everything like the main map does and it splits it into 2 images with just audio controls that every car has external controls to change track back and forward, I don’t get it
You never know if you don't have homekit for your garage door. it will appears automatically when you are close to your home, and easily you touch the garage door icon to open your garage.

Would be great if they somehow get youtube or iTunes to show on the car play display.
you cant view video while the car is in motion and you can already get music apps to display on the head unit so im not sure what you are asking for there.

Waze has some nice features but they really need to improve the legibility of labels & icons on the screen. They're far too small. If you can't tell at a glance what it is, either make it bigger or get rid of it.

No, this would be the opposite of 'great'. If you need to watch such things while travelling, catch the bus... and don't start with the 'BuT iT's FoR mY PaSsEnGeRs!"

But you can only change track back and forward and it’s better to do that on the steering wheel control, what’s the point of just making the map smaller with 2 pieces and not the whole view
I don’t know what you’re talking about. at work we use a fleet of new vehicles all changed out every few years. None of them have steering wheel controls and they all have the CarPlay upgrade. Just because you have steering wheel control doesn’t mean everyone does... that’s really a myopic complaint.

Cool all the updates coming to Carplay now. I recall my previous vehicle had it and it was very basic. I heard Microsoft Teams is coming to CarPlay too. Too bad Tesla doesn't give us this option to run it. Good anyway for all my friends here that have it in their cars.
I understand Tesla will never allow CarPlay: too cautious about a CarPlay crashing the entire system? CarPlay is one of the 'requirements' for vehicle purchases these days.

What’s the point it makes map smaller and 2 out of 3 is Waze and for audio controls most cars have steering wheel controls to change track it doesn’t make anything better just not as much of the map
Some of us have big screens and no issues with map / audio / directions and sometimes one other item listed on the right. I like options, we may or may not use them.

Welcome to the Internet in 2020.

Some people don't understand that no one can please everyone all the time.

Not your mom, not your spouse, not your favorite sports team, not your elected officials, not even whatever deity you worship.

And yet these same dimwits fly off the handle when they see something that doesn't apply to them. I generally view this as a combination of immaturity and self-absorption.

There's a lot of this online not just here at MacRumors. And it's becoming more frequent...

A sh!tload of people are going to end up being really, really bitter people. 🤷‍♂️

Returning to the original topic, it's good to see these companies offer more choices to their users.

Telsas have enough trouble crashing on their own without carplay.

Depending on what car you drive and the infotainment (or lack of infotainment), this may or may not be better. Apple CarPlay and Android auto largely caters to those who own vehicles that lack a good infotainment system - you're willing to sacrifice some things just to access your phone and navigation whether it's on one tile or 3 tiles.

Those who have more sophisticated systems (BMW iDrive, Mercedes MBUX, Audi MMI) you have the infotainment screen in addition to HUD and assuming you're not reliant on Waze but still want to access your phone functions and navigation, Apple CarPlay (dashboard) may be an inferior option.

I leased a car in 2014 with no gps because the dealer assured me Waze integration was happening soon. It took me days to learn my way home from work.

Auto dealer sales reps will say pretty much anything to move whatever is on their lot. It's their inventory, their liability.

When buying a car the best practice is to never EVER talk with a retail showroom sales rep.

It’s better because what’s to the left and right is useless information, and with the map on the dashboard you don’t need to switch screens to navigate songs, open your garage door, etc.

And you know what else? You are NOT required to use it.
No need to go there. He could’ve just been asking, and you could’ve just answered.

All true, but Waze has one thing that Apple Maps doesn’t: crowdsourced hazard/LEO data. It’s the only Google product I use.

On my Mercedes you now don’t have steering wheel controls - touchpad (with haptic feedback), touchscreen or voice control. The Mercedes MBUX looks pretty but is ultimately useless compared to CarPlay - no audiobook support, no Plex support, navigation inferior to apple maps, Spotify support costs an extra £10/month in addition to the Spotify subscription, no iMessage support etc. I don’t personally use the Dashboard view as I don’t find it useful or we’ll implemented.
