I totally agree about traffic being great in Maps...and I use Maps almost exclusively.

I haven’t commuted in a few years and like Waze running in the background on long trips for notifications.

I tried Google, but it didn’t notify me of a single speed trap or construction zone despite passing many.
It would be great if we could edit the dashboard; have Maps navigating but have Waze on hand to let’s know when there’s police. Unless just having it running in the background gives you notifications?

Actually, looks like @BillyBurke might have answered that.

Yes...it worked in the past by simply starting the route in Apple Maps, then just opening the Waze app and then going to dashboard view which did default to Apple Maps only while Waze was still technically open. While not routing, Waze would still announce alerts based on the road you were traveling on.

Yup, it’s the best system I’ve had in a car. So many ways to operate it. Voice, steering controls, touch screen, physical buttons, iDrive controller and even gesture controls which I use all the time.

The only item lacking in my system is the lack of CarPlay integration with my HUD. Frustratingly it works with the newer ID7 which I don’t have so I guess my next car will have this but I’ll have to wait 5 years or so as I don’t change all too often and I just forked out for the 5 series 3 years ago!

I can however still combine the excellent BMW navigation and CarPlay so I get all my HUD directions which is all that’s necessary to be honest.
5 series facelift is so tempting 🤩

Yep as mentioned this works fine. Doesnt really matter what order you open things but if you open Waze at some point then it will run in the background and do notifications for things it has coming up both as voice notifications and pop ups over the top of Apple Maps. Works pretty well.

Two things to keep in mind doing this, though. First, Waze likes to crash in the background. I’ve yet to have it run for a full hour in the background without crashing. Second, the alerts are less accurate when you aren’t actively routed somewhere. Since it doesn’t know when you’re going to turn, if there’s a turn between you and the alert, it won’t sound it at the half mile point every time. Sometimes you’ll only have a few seconds notice for something like an accident or police alert. Some you’ll miss completely.

Most i've used it was about a 2hr drive and it seemed to run ok for that but i dont do it often enough to say Waze is stable etc. I appreciate the alerts wont appear as early as they would normally but its normally ok on the routes i use. For example on the section of M1 motorway that i often use on the way home if i get on at Junction 25 to get off at Junction 29 there or the other way coming into work there are 4 gantry speed cameras in both directions and you get 0.3 miles notice of each of them. It will be easier on motorways as there are less turns off etc but in the main its better than nothing.

It's entirely possible it's more stable now than it used to be. When I started driving for Uber a year and a half ago, I experimented with leaving Waze in the background, as staying in the Uber Driver app to navigate is way easier than switching apps all the time. It never lasted more than an hour. After two or three months I gave up and just go without the alerts now. That was a while ago though, maybe it's time I gave it another shot.

Oh man, that's such a short little screen though! I have a 10" 16:9 screen in my car and having the extra vertical space makes CarPlay look SO much nicer. Like being able to see the name of the song playing when navigating, for instance. I know that short and super wide displays are the trendy thing right now, but they're so much less useful in my opinion.

Thanks for the pic! I think this is what most people don’t realize when they comment about how bad the layout is versus a full map screen.

Mercedes, BMW, etc may be the few and far between with wide screens in vehicles today, but it won’t be long before everyone goes beyond the typical 6”-8” square screen you find in most vehicles today.

Also, CarPlay has had the capability to access multiple screens for a couple of years now. Car companies simply have not taken advantage of it yet.

Not only can it show info on both the main screen as well as an instrument cluster screen behind the wheel (or HUD), it can integrate car controls like the ability to adjust environmental controls as well as other car functions.

Anxiously awaiting the first car company that realizes maybe it is easier and cheaper to just use the Apple and Android UI along with their own crappy ones for those of us that would prefer that integration.

My screen is taller, but it seems to only show the name of the song when a calendar event is not showing on the home screen. If it's just nav and now playing, it will show, but you add a 3rd item on the right side and it loses the name.

Polestar seems closest to that idea.

Oh good point. I never have the calendar view on, but apparently (I just went out and tested) even on my bigger screen it looks like that example with it enabled.

Now if only I could choose which garage door it wants me to open on that screen. I don't need to open my wife's garage door, and there is no way to change it. Kind of stupid thing Apple overlooks and ignores for years.

iPhone > Settings > General > CarPlay > {Select your vehicle} > Customize > Drag Waze to the top of the list
That just moves its location on the screen. Carplay will default to the last used navigation app. So open waze, start a route, and then go home. It will be on the home screen.

I always knew Tesla’s were junk.
Junk is a stretch, but they do have their problems. Most cars these days are either a good car with dated technology
(most ICE vehicles), or the latest technology built into a sub-quality car (Teslas). I've heard so many complaints about Tesla's build quality and reliability, but everyone raves about the tech.

Wait, Tesla doesn’t support CarPlay?
Nope and no Android Auto. They have their own setup and improves very frequent. Bought my car 6 months ago and it has improved a lot. Tesla needs to figure out a way to incorporate it seamlessly into their own environment which is harder than we think. I would hate it jumping in and out to use the car controls for example.

I don't think enough owners have been tweeting Elon about it to make it a priority. I mean we are going to be just now getting waypoints and that has been asked for since 2013 (vocally at that)...
