Defective. This is why I always order two!
Previous issues that were unique to me:
Light bleed cause iPhone 4 screen not aligned right
Dead pixels iPhone 5
Dim panel on iPhone 7 Plus
Extreme yellow screen iPhone X

Replacements have luckily been fine.
Got two coming today and will keep the better one.

That really stinks. I had this issue on my iPhone X and it's not the casing. This one is from the black borders around the screen that probably sit right.

I have the same sharp edge problem on my Xs Max. So it’s not just a one off. Gonna get it replaced

I seem to have this a bit on the bottom edge of the glass of my max screen . I just compared it to my X and there is definitely a difference. Don’t think I’m going to worry about it.

Had my X replaced last year because of some issues I was having and the replacement had this same problem and Apple replaced it. Max I received today also had this issue, but after lightly scraping it with my fingernai, it has smoothed out. Don’t know if I should bring it back or not, like OP said he was worried about waterproof seal. I think I’m going to wait a couple of days.

Got the same problem with my Xs, also the right side is smoother than the left but both not as smooth as my old X

I think my main concern was the waterproofing. If there was a problem with the screen being elevated and I got any water underneath, I’m positive they’d laugh in my face if I tried to exchange it lol.
Same here man! Got an issue with the iPhone 7 and his ‘waterproofing’, never ever had it in the water but still it stopped working someday and they found water inside so didn’t replace it. Maybe it had similar problems as my Xs now and I didn’t noticed....

Same issue with my new XS Gold I got yesterday.

The left side is fine, but the right side is way off. Right on the middle of the right side, I can see the side of the screen element itself, it doesn’t sit flush near the frame.

Like OP I’m worried about the seals, and it might as well be a swollen battery causing it as well.

Ordered from Apple.dk, so will have to wait til Monday before I can call and see what to do. Right now the phone is back in the box.

Hopefully they'll replace everyone else's too. Had a few people in-store check it out, and all agreed that it definitely wasn't right. The iPhone repair lady came out and said there'd definitely be a sealing issue if it was in contact with any water.

Just got my Gold XS Max and mine has this issue as well. We’ll see if it bothers me over the next week.

There has been at least four other members who have had similar issues with the rough edges, I personally would replace it, especially within your 14 days and they just will issue a new device.

This is seeming to be more of a prominent issue than I originally thought. I may end up swapping gold for space gray, which will hopefully resolve this for me. I’ll keep you all posted, thank you fro sharing.

Here's my gold Xs.

The display sits flush on the left side with the volumen buttons, but on the right side with sim tray and power button the screen element itself almost sits above the entire frame around the middle of the phone. It's less noticeable towards the top/bottom of the phone.

Since Apples hotline is closed during weekends in Denmark and we have no Apple stores, I will have to wait till Monday or Tuesday before I might be able to get a hold of them to see what to do.

I'm considering returning it as DOA if possible, but will that just yield a replacement phone or am I eligible for a refund instead? I'm hoping the latter since there is a wait for a new phone, and I can go pick up a space gray Xs locally instead to get a new phone asap.

I have the same issue. Will be hitting up Apple store this afternoon.

Just got back from the Apple store, they were willing to return my Max with this issue and give me a new one. Only problem is that I went through the IUP and would have to go through another credit pull to do so. Didn’t want to do that right now, so I held off. I got the edges to where they don’t feel sharp anymore, so I’ll give it a few days and see if it really bothers me, which it really hasn’t yet. Said if I don’t want to do the IUP over again, that I could wait till they get replacement units in and swap it out through the Genius Bar.

So just a heads up to those on the IUP program, they’ll do another credit pull, or at least that was my experience at that particular Apple Store (Paramus, NJ).

The tech compared my phone to the store demo models and confirmed it was rough. They replaced it for me immediately.
Did you purchase through the IPhone Upgrade Program or outright purchase?

I was only offered a replacement, but they had a few in store (and I also got mine through a carrier, so it was a different situation). Maybe before you go in, just give them a call and ask them to check the stock. That's what I did, and she said to not bother booking an appointment, just come in and explain and they'll see me right away - which was on launch day, so I was grateful for them squeezing me in.

He basically said to me, "It's unlikely because it's day 1, but I have to tell you anyway that it may be made of refurbished parts." I'm like... I don't think after a few hours there'll be any refurbished devices just yet lol.

My SG Xs max had a sharp edge where the antenna band was not totally flush. Spoke to support and the earliest appointment they had for me in any nearby store was next weekend (I am away next weekend!) I just ordered a new one for pickup and had them refund the first one when I collected the new phone, provided your credit card can take the temporary hit I think this is the quickest way. The replacement is fine.

I had the rough edges on the X earlier this year, it was only because my original launch day X did not have them otherwise I might not have noticed, it was not right though and it even snagged my hair when making a call sometimes, got it replaced.
