Hi all,
I have this on the end of my Xs Max, it’s polished in the Center but on the corners it’s as if the polishing just stopped and the corners look all scruffy. There is a clear line of stop start.
Seems like a manufacturer issue.

Don't know how that passed Quality Control.

Thats BS. Its an issue that is clear as day.. I would've asked to talk to a manager lol

I was able to pick up a new phone, iPhone Xs Max 256 Gold, it was flawless.

I saw the 3 store customer rep I encountered earlier and they couldn't look me in the eyes. I know they saw me since I was in line and they were checking the line every so often. I just want to get this over with but I'm glad I took the risk of having it replaced, though not a smooth process, I'll be in peace, lol.

Had the same problem, went to Apple store, no problems in getting the unit swapped out. They immediately acknowledged the issue and as I'm on the iUP the process was a bit long. They said they don't need to do a second credit check but rather an update to Barclays in the UK with the new device serial.

Did they need the credit card you used when you bought the phone? I had to go back home because i forgot it and they said they needed it. No credit check, because it’s good for 30 days, just needed the card. On my way back there now.

Just got back, no new phone. They told me they had to sell me the new phone first, using existing credit pull, and then return the phone. I was ok with this, however I was denied because I hadn’t sent in my X that I originally upgraded from yet. Apple store employee called citizens one, and this is what he was told. They said I’ll keep getting denied until I send the X back. Still waiting on the return kit. This has been a real headache.

Just opened my Max, rough edges. Could almost cut my fingers if I pushed really hard...weird. First iPhone I have had an issue with on the initial opening.

Apple arranged for a swap at my local store, they said engineering wanted the phone back.

Walked in, they were expecting me. Easy-peasy. New XS Max is smooth as butter.

I think i’m having the same issue here with my xs max. Just to get an idea should my finger nail not catch as I run it over the screen off the edge of the phone? my nail catches on the front and back when I do this. I wouldn’t say it’s sharp enough to ever cut me but feels strange when holding it. Certainly does not feel smooth.

Yes, it should be smooth by all accounts and your nail shouldn't catch. My screen to band is like that all the way around - the back glass to band is not like that though, it's as smooth as I would expect the front to be. As I've said elsewhere, every Max I've looked at is like this - mine and 2 others in different shops. I will try to find some more this weekend as I really want to feel what it should be like before sending it back to Apple.

To those feeling the "rough" edges, did you try wiping it with a dry cloth? I opened my phone and checked out the edges and the left side felt rough - but it turns out it was just adhesive that seems like it came from the plastic covering being misaligned. After wiping it down it now feels pretty smooth.

Could be a different issue, but I know at first I thought I had this problem but it turns out I didn't.

I had the same issue on mine. It was just some leftover glue/adhesive. Not ideal for a fresh, out-of-the-box phone, but I just scraped it off with my fingers and a warm wet cloth. Easy!

Yep, needed my Visa Debit card and passport again.

The chap at the store said it was the water proof membrane and the unit needs to be replaced which was fine by me.

He refunded the upfront fee to a gift card, returned the defective model so it can be sent back to engineering. They didn't have any stock on the "system" but they have a stash for incidents like this so he rushed around getting it put into the reservation only to quickly take it out again just in case if someone else manages to reserve it. After that the process was just the same as before if you're on iUP just no credit check, they update the serial with the loan company etc.

just bought a max last night from Best Buy

did notice the bottom edge of front glass is very rough.....(above the speakers)

can almost feel like it could cut your finger....

should i take this back ?

do they have a quality control issue with these phones ?

If you’re interpreting that the rough edges could ‘almost cut your finger’, then I wouldn’t even be asking, I would be taking it back immediately if it poses that much of an issue.

I bought two max’s. One has perfect smooth edges, the other was rough / almost sharp in many places. Obvious difference between the two.

I purchased a 64GB XS MAX SS direct from Apple which had a misaligned steel band at the bottom and the plastic bezel around the screen was rough all the way round with little gaps, returned that one.

I then purchased a replacement (256GB) from Currys/PCWorld and although it’s mostly perfect, the steel band on one side at the back is slightly raised as if the edge of the back glass casing sits very slightly lower than the top edge of the steel so it causes a very slight rough feeling when holding, the opposite side is completely smooth.

Part of me is thinking just leave it as I don’t want to keep replacing and everything else is great with the phone (plus it’ll be in a case 99% of the time anyway), another part of me is thinking it’s a £1249 phone for that price everything should be perfect.

As I’m housbound with a broken ankle at the moment I spoke to Apple who said I could take it into a store in a few weeks and get them to look at it.

Question is if I decide to go this route what’s the general opinion on the chances of them doing something about it under warranty?, it is from an authorised reseller, and the lady at apple I spoke to said that’d be ok just take the receipt/invoice and the box / accessories.

I have one rough edge near the top right on the antenna. I can feel it if I run my finger along the edge. Cannot see anything though. No issue to me. I finally put a case on it. Not because of that.

My 2nd iPhone XS Max replacement has a very sharp edge along the middle right of the phone which feels like it’s shaving the hairs on the back of your hand if you rub over it. Kinda makes using the phone a little uncomfortable if you’re holding it a certain way.

Also, I have a fairly serious issue at the top of the phone, there’s a gap! The phone is actually curved at the top and there’s a gap that I’m worried might compromise the waterproofing of the phone. I’m going to pay the Apple Store a visit later today, can’t put up with these issues on a phone this expensive. :(

So for everyone that got a new phone, is it perfect? I am on my 3rd Xs Max and each one has had a gap between the SS and the glass in different spots. The one I have now is the best of the three but I'm wondering if anyone got one that has NO gap around the phone.

Sending my second one back on Tuesday, and will rebuy, and if the third one exhibits similar issues I’ll be paying an apple store a visit, hopefully third time lucky!

Back to my second iPhone (SE lol) in the mean time, it’s a great phone and all but the screens tiny in comparison to the max.

No.

I had 2 XS. Same problem.

I thought the X would be better since it’s been it production for a lot longer.

However, the first had a chip in the band and a screw that was not flush with the bezel.

The second X has neither of those issues but it also has a gap! I decided to keep it in the end. I would guess they are within tolerance. Annoying though it is. In my mind they shouldn’t be like this.

Edit: For what it’s worth, this will be my last flagship device from Apple. I’m sorely tempted to get an SE while I still can. I’d rather buy their ”budget” model in the future. The QC on the X and XS is poor - I’ve had 4 handsets, two of different generations (X/XS), and all have had physical issues with the build quality.

Wow, you must be very unlucky since my first Max was physically perfect.

Last week first phone I had was the gap was so big you can fit about three pieces of paper into it plus I can see dust entering into the edges.

Second phone has smaller gaps but glue sticking out guessing it was half finished.

You said that spot on I use to enjoy unboxing Apple products the QC is poor now to be honest they get away with it people don't complain or care about the flaws only a few do.

might as well chim in got my max on open day noticed it had a pin size scratch under coating also the power button on
one side was like flush with the phone so you had to push much harder there to get it to work.....not to happy with it then i had the wifi problem wouldnt keep on wifi at all also had very slow lte service .
decided to take back after 2 days of owning it and maybe get another after they fix lte issues.

I have had 2 iphone X phones and they were perfect.

Your better off buying at your local Apple store open the box instore inspect the phone before you leave they do straight swap.
